The Maybelline Great Lash Mascara Very Black Waterproof is available for GBP 4.99.
The mascara comes in a pink-coloured packing with a black top. On the packing are the product name and additional product information. The mascara has a straight wand with widely spaced ridges.
The mascara is described as follows. "CONDITIONS AS IT THICKENS. WATERPROOF. Why You'll Love It. Formula glides on smoothly to build great-looking lashes. Lash building formula makes lashes look fuller. No clumps. Ophthalmologically tested. Suitable for contact lens wearers. Waterproof."
The ingredients are Petroleum Distillates, Pentaerythrityl Hydrogenated Rosinate, Carnauba Wax, Polyethylene, Synthetic Beeswax, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Ceresin, Beeswax, Kaolin, Magnesium Carbonate, Aluminum Stearate, Silica, Propylene Carbonate, Cetyldimethicone, Methylparaben, Butylparaben, Propylparaben, Tocopheryl Acetate and Wheat Germ Oil.
The mascara should be applied from the outer lash to the inner lash while sweeping the brush slowly from root to tip and it should not dry between coats.
The mascara cannot be applied well, as the mascara is wet and clumps. The lashes look fuller after applying two coats. The mascara does not smudge while applying and the lashes look natural. The lashes do not stick together. The mascara actually lasts all day and is long-lasting. The mascara is waterproof and it is not easy to remove the mascara.
The mascara does not smudge and is long-lasting.
I can recommend the Maybelline Great Lash Mascara Very Black Waterproof, as the lashes look fuller and the mascara is long-lasting. The mascara cannot be applied well and leaves clumps. The mascara does not smudge and it is not easy to remove.
I bought this many years ago after reading a lot of rave reviews about it in glossy magazines. On use I thought it was rubbish and rarely used it, I've recently been given another tube and wondered if the formulation and or brush had changed. I'm sad to say it hasn't.
The Mascara is very cheap it's £5.19 at Boots right now and £3.25 online from 'cosmetic-kingdom' I have seen it cheaper too, it's even available in multi-packs of about 4. It's not bad value for the price as it is usable it's just not as special as the blurb would have you believe, but isn't that usually the way.
The Maybelline claim.
The below is lifted directly from the Maybelline complete with American spelling.
* America's favorite mascara conditions as it thickens
* Lash-doubling waterproof formula glides on smoothly to build great-looking, smudge-proof lashes
* Lash-building brush makes it easy to get a full lash look without clumps or globs
* Contact lens safe and hypoallergenic
* Waterproof, also available in Washable and Curved Brush
The Great lash I have is in blackest black, it also comes in very black, and brownish black. On sliding the wand out of the tube I'm aware that there isn't a lot of product on the brush, which I quite like as I don't want to feel I'm glooping my eyelashes together straight away. The brush is a spiral bristle type, a lot of people don't like this because it is small. I love it for that very reason. I don't have huge sweeping eyelashes (though they aren't particularly short either) but this 'old fashioned' brush works well on my lashes and gets right in to the roots, lower lashes and corners of the eyes. If only the product itself were better.
On my eyes is where my problems with this mascara starts, as I sweep the brush through my lashes there is very little difference apparent, and it takes several sweeps before my lashes start to look more defined. The look is not very noticeable even with several coats, and the claim of buildability in my opinion is nonsense. The shade of the mascara I'm using is a very good dense black and has a slight gloss to it as healthy lashes do, so if you have fair lashes you will see more of a difference than those of us with dark hair. The mascara seems quite wet on application, and if I blink I'm left with an imprint of my lashes both under my eyes and on my upper lids below my eyebrows, it takes a while to dry down thoroughly. Maybelline advise that you don't let the mascara dry between coats, which shouldn't be a problem as it takes so long to dry.
If you like a very natural look then this could work for you, however in my opinion the look is so subtle that it's really not worth bothering I'd rather go without. I did eventually get some definition with many many sweeps of the brush, but I don't have time to fiddle for ages with my mascara, and the look remained below average.
Once dry (eventually) I find it to be quite flaky compared to other reasonably priced mascaras I own, and my eyelashes feel sort of brittle. I don't find the mascara creates too many clumps and keeps the lashes fairly separated. I do not notice any lengthening or thickening of my lashes.
As for conditioning my lashes with use, absolutely not, there is no difference to the condition of my lashes while using this whatsoever.
Considering how little effect this has on the look of my eyes it does take a fair amount of scrubbing to get off. I always use an oil based make up remover for water proof mascara and they usually come of with a minor tussle, this puts up quite a fight, and if the look was good then this stubbornness to come off would be a positive rather than just a hassle.
I believe the poor performance (in my opinion), of this product is almost entirely down to the formulation and not the brush, as I when I threw away my first Great Lash I saved the (washed) brush and have used it very successfully with other mascaras, giving a much better result. In fact the brush is the only thing that lives up to the Maybelline claim in that it allows the product to glide on smoothly. I want to love this, every time I try I hope it will give me lovely black natural lashes if nothing else, but it doesn't. I would say that all the other claims are advertising hyperbole, and I will never buy it again or even use it if given as a gift.
I am a self-confessed mascaraoholic. I love mascara; I wear it every day, and am continually on the hunt for a good bargain. So when I saw Maybelline's Great Lash on sale I grabbed it, having used Maybelline probably far too much in the past (I should have bought shares in the company). I also wear contact lenses so I have to be careful with my eye-makeup. But I put my trust in Maybelline.
That turned out to be a bad decision and I was sorely disappointed. Okay, I wasn't expecting the best, but I was expecting more.
The wand itself is simple, just a straight, standard wand with quite widely-spaced ridges - not great for getting those hard-to-reach lashes. The mascara itself is very wet so clumps easily, and I found it difficult to apply more than one coat because it very quickly turned into an immense gloopy mess. I believe that I am quite practiced at applying mascara yet somehow I managed to get it everywhere. This tiny little tube of doom succeeded in transforming my face into a complete chaos zone. Of course it's also waterproof, so the clean-up wasn't that simple either. Once it's on your skin it is stuck there and I had to scrub it off, even with eye-makeup remover.
I wanted to include a positive point about the packaging - it looks cute and girly and pink. However I only attempted to use this mascara twice before banning it from my makeup case, and somehow the sticker on the tube is still managing to peel away. Quite cheaply made is my only conclusion.
***FOR THOSE WHO WEAR CONTACT LENSES***
Please, if you wear contact lenses and like your eyeballs the way they are, I would not recommend buying this product. I wear both waterproof and non-waterproof mascara, but this just destroyed my lenses. The mascara was firmly fused with my lenses and it proved such a nightmare to try and remove it that I ended up throwing the lenses away.
An additional note on the price - I bought this mascara quite a while ago in a sale (won't be doing that again), but having a browse around the internet it seems to be available for between £4.50 - £5.50.
-Very wet and clumpy
- Difficult to remove
- Not recommended for those who wear contact lenses
This is just my opinion though. I would definitely recommend other Maybelline products and even other Maybelline mascaras. Just not this one.
Anyone who has ever read any of my mascara reviews through the years on here will be aware that its one of my bug bears. I never ever find anything really good and either it agitates my extremely sensitive eyes or clumps and I simply find the stuff disgusting. Having said that I wouldn't dream of applying make up and not using mascara. Go figure! I have tried permanent mascara (doing it myself with a kit and at a salon) and found the results be disappointing to say the least. I had hoped to find a brilliant alternative to shelling out pounds on a tube, of er......crap basically!
My most recent terrible purchase was a Boots No7 mascara. I paid £12 for it and it was dreadful, so much so that I contacted Boots marketing department to complain and did get my money back and the mascara actually hit the bin in total disgust! However it left me again with the whole mascara dilema...which one next?
Now this one I have heard of. I have read many reviews about it and seen it often in stores and knew that I should expect to pay about £5.00 for something marketed as 'No.1 Mascara In The U.S'. I felt as I picked it up in Boots that, that is a huge claim and if its number 1 mascara then it should be good enough for me!
The pink and black oblong tube comes on a pink backing card covered by see-through plastic. On the that card we are told that it is Maybelline 'New York', Great Lash, 'Waterproof', No.1 Mascara In The U.S and that it perfectly separates lashes, has a conditioning formula and gives no clumps. There is also a small picture shown of the mascara brush and we are told that it is a precise lash building brush and the colour is shown by a colour coded dot and given its name (in my case I opted for very black). On the back of the card we are told a bit about the product and how to use it, the ingredients and size is stated (which is 12.5ml and the only size that I am aware that it is available to purchase in) and contact details for Maybelline are given. On the tube and in black writing we are simply told what it is and the size is stated basically. The tube is neat, girly and informative enough. The lid that holds the brush simply twists on and off with ease and its robust and I find that even though I store mine with plenty of other make-up items it hasn't gone tatty looking through being knocked and bashed about which is something I greatly appreciate.
Well as I have previously mentioned I opted for the very black colour (other colours are available) and indeed it is a very black colour. What this does is coat the brush which is a very simple, conventional spiral designed brush in the colour. The 'wand' is a good length and no clumps or excess liquid come out of the top of the tube as you use it. At first I thought this mascara appeared a little dry as no real moisture was seen on the brush but it simply transfers to the eyelashes with total ease.
I find the colour glossy enough and I'm impressed with the thin brush which allows me complete control when using it to even get to small eyelashes however all in all I'm not all that impressed with it.
Fair do's this doesn't agitate the eyes, is simple enough to use and coats the eyelashes with ease and is very waterproof indeed. It stays put with no smudging or flakiness all day long, doesn't feel uncomfortable after wearing it all day either and is simple enough to remove with your usual make-up removing routine. Sounds good right? I mean those things are pretty positive?!
However the let down on this is that I have to use a few coats to get any lash building going on which is time consuming. I find it lengthens just a touch but it does tend to make my eyelashes look a little spindly and I certainly don't get what I think of as fluttery eyelashes! I like the colour, I like its staying power and ease of application and as a day to day mascara I rather like it and yes I would buy it again for sure but on the back of the card this mascara came on I was told I should get a dramatic finish and I seriously don't get that in my opinion. I wanted fat lashes!
Not bad, but not my number 1....I'm still on a quest for that sadly lol.
Available in all good chemists and some supermarkets costing around the £5.00 mark. It comes in 3 shades of black, 2 shades of brown, a navy blue and clear.

I love it. So, when I looked on here and saw all the terrible reviews, I was completely in shock! The first thing I noticed when I decided to buy this product was the packaging. It's bright pink and black if you get the waterproof version, otherwise it's bright pink and green. I think it's fantastic - it looks great in my makeup bag and I can never lose it looking like that! Secondly, the price. I think this may well be the cheapest mascara I own, and I own quite a few. But this one is definitely my favourite, the fact that it is under a fiver is an added bonus! So although it doesn't last very long (this is what I took the star off for, and the fact that it is quite a small bottle, even though it's probably my own fault it runs out so fast - admittedly I do use quite a lot), I can afford to buy them whenever I need. When I got it home I was so excited to try it after reading all the fabulous reviews in magazines, and the 'America's no.1 mascara' adverts I kept seeing. And I wasn't disappointed. When I pulled the brush out the bottle I was quite surprised to see how small it was - I applied it not expecting any miracles - but I soon found out this is an advantage. It dispenses just the right amount of mascara onto the brush and then your lashes, and it's dinky size means you can get into all the little lashes around your eyes. Now, most mascaras i've tried which claim to volumise your lashes are quite frankly rubbish. But this one, with its 'lash-doubling waterproof formula' does exactly what you want - it separates your lashes amazingly, they don't clump together and each one is prefectly defined and feathery, as well as a lot longer than they were before, making it a good all-rounder. You can also apply as much as you need, as it never clumps - I think the most i've used is 6 coats when I was going for a really dramatic look - this makes it incredibly versatile and suitable to any occasion, you can simple adapt the number of coats as to whether you're going for the 'natural look', or a false-lash effect. It does both, and everything in between. And finally, the factor that's really made me fall in love with it. The fact that it can hold a curl no matter what. I have a slight crazy obsession with my heated eyelash curlers and I refuse to use mascaras which will re-straighten them, making this one perfect - my lashes stay perfectly curled all day :) Okay seriously, don't listen to all the other reviews telling you it's rubbish and it doesn't work and it'll make your eyeballs drop out, etc. Buy it, you will never look back again :)
I've been using this mascara for a few years now - I've bought others during that time but this is the one I always come back to! It's a good everyday mascara, doesn't claim (as far as I'm aware - I haven't seen any adverts recently) to do anything spectacular, just works really well.
Occasionally I end up with smudges under my eyes after a long day but this is probably more to do with me rubbing my eyes when tired etc. than the mascara itself. I also have clumps sometimes when I use it, when it claims to not create any clumps, but I'd be surprised if that were a realistic claim to be honest! Most mascaras say similar things but I've yet to find one that lives up to these claims. Overall though it's very good and I would definitely recommend it.
At around £4.50 it's a bit cheaper than some of the other, newer mascaras out there but in my opinion it does just as good a job.
I wouldn't say this is the best mascara I've used, but I would say this mascara is OK. I first used it after I was running out of mascara and I found this one, but it was my mum's so I asked her if I could use some for a few days until I get a new mascara!
I really like waterproof mascara as it usually tends to be long lasting, more outstanding and doesn't come off - even if you rub your eyes or go swimming!
However there were quite a few things which annoyed me about this mascara - the first one was that it did turn out a bit clumpy and made my lashes look messy and gave me the spider leg lash look!
- the second thing was that it was a nightmare to get off before I went to bed, sometimes I only got very little off and woke up the next morning with mascara round my eyes! very attractive panda eyes!
- thirdly it does cost a fair bit to buy this product - around five pounds.
This is sold in Superdrug, Boots and various supermarkets all around the same price.
Personally I won't buy this product again, unless I really, really had to, or really needed some mascara but it's not really worth the money or mess.
So I'm giving this product three out of five stars.
There are so many mascaras on the market for various different purposes-when I went on the hunt to find a good 'all round' performer I stumbled across Maybelline Great Lash Waterproof Mascara.
Apparently it's one of Maybellines biggest selling items-and clearly I could tell why (and if the website is correct this is America's number 1 selling mascara-all those users surely cannot be wrong?!).
For the price (I picked it up for £3.99 at a discount cosmetics place) you get 12.5ml. Once upon a time the only packaging was literally a sight for sore eyes-although I'm lead to believe the green and pink packaged mascara is still available however it's for the plan Great Lash mascara that is not advertised as waterproof. I have only purchased mascara in the pink and black packaging over the last six months or so as I really wanted something to withstand tears at weddings and so on.
The funkier packaging without a doubt is the pink bottle and black 'wand' combination-it looks nice in your handbag and is instantly recognisable by fashionatas everywhere. Great Lash is popular amongst the elite as well as the average person like me. Most if not all 'must haves for your handbag at a budget articles include this mascara as it has stood the test of modern times-just looking at the shelves shows you how many variations we have of mascara by the big named brands.
Applying this produce is in my opinion a doddle. It glides on and two layers can easily be applied with no fear of clumping or flaking. I find this mascara stays put all day (and even night) and has to be removed with some kind of make up remover. I haven't attempted to apply more than two layers, thus cannot comment on that.
One coat would be enough for an office day look (if you like to wear mascara at work). I personally prefer a clear more nude look for work.
My advice to anyone applying this mascara is if you do get some mascara on your cheek etc wait until it dries and remove it gently with a bit of make up remover-if you try too hard to remove the fresh 'wet' mascara it makes a horrid mess. If you have steady hands you can apply fine glitter dust to the tips of your eye lashes whilst the mascara dries for a lovely party look-it may take a few practice runs to get a desirable look though.
It's a great bargain item, thumbs up from me. The mascara lasts (for me) for six months-however following advice I usually replace my mascara every three months. As a contact lens wearer I haven't had any issues of irritation either.
I am a heavy user of Mascara and over the years - this is one of the better ones. The wand is easy to use, it is a normal 'brush tip' which I much prefer over the variety of varied wands you get nowadays. It coats my lashes evenly and I find that it certainly highlights my eyes. I don't have any issues with application - especially my lower lashes. I find that the black appears to lengthen my lashes and if used with a lash curler is just as effective as a volume lash mascara. The waterproof is a god send for me. I will say after several hours of wear, i do notice it starting to rub off - with my under eyes beginning to go a bit grey! then when you try and remove, it is a nightmare - I tend to go for vaseline... although that still does not get it all off.
As I said at the beginning of this review - it is certainly one of the better Mascara's and I would recommend - however, there are better ones on the market.
I love my Max Factor Masterpiece mascaras, they're absolutely fantastic and my they're my first choice when it comes to eye make-up. I've been using Max Factor mascara for years, and was reluctant to change, but at £9 a go, I was hoping I could find something cheaper as I'm trying to save money at the moment. I decided to try Maybelline's Great Lash mascara which I bought from Boots a while back with one of those '£2 off make-up' vouchers that they do now and again.
It says on the backing card which the mascara comes on that this is America's No.1 mascara, which sounded impressive and I also liked that it's waterproof too.
The tube stands out from others available as it comes in a fairly distinctive bright pink tube with black writing and lid. Whilst being a little different from others available, I do think the tube looks a little bit dated, compared to some of the other mascaras on the market which are packaged in a sleeker or funkier way.
The brush of the mascara is fairly small compared to the one I used to, but the bristles seem firm and are fairly densely packed. So far I've never managed to lose a bristle from this brush, which has on occasion happened with cheaper mascaras.
The card that this mascara came on, states that this mascara:
- Is lash building
- Separates lashes
- Will not clump
- Is waterproof
- Is long lasting
All of these are things I look for in a mascara, the only thing I might add is that I would like something lengthening.
When applying the mascara I find that it goes on very smoothly and there is no clumping. I do find however, that I have to apply several coats as just one seems to make virtually no difference to my eyelashes at all. Apparently this is 'lash building' therefore the more coats you apply the more dramatic the effect. I found that no matter how much of this mascara I applied, my lashes still looked very natural.
This does add colour which is great for me as I have blonde eyelashes, and it also seperates my lashes and doesn't give that awful 'spiders legs' look. The problem for me though, is that it adds very little in the way of length and nothing at all in the way of thickness. It gives a very natural look - and I mean VERY natural. It's a very subtle effect, and although I don't want over the top make-up, this looks so natural I may as well not have bothered.
On the plus side, the mascara is long lasting, and doesn't flake out around the eyes like some others I've used.
A 12.5ml bottle costs £4.88 from Boots. It is available in blackest black, very black and brown.
This mascara is OK, and I will continue to use it, however I wont buy another bottle when this runs out. Although it gives my lashes a good colour and separates them, it doesn't add the length or the thickness I am used to with my Max Factor favourite, and I wouldn't recommend it unless you're looking for something to give you a very natural look.
maybelline great lash mascara is very reasonably priced but spend the extra money for something else, you'll be glad you did!this mascara made my extremely eyes swollen, itchy, red & crusty! it was very painful & unattractive.i've NEVER had an allergic reaction to any makeup & i'm not allergic to anything else so i didn't realize it was the mascara at first.i finally went back to my old mascara & have no more problems.now i just have to wait for the skin around my eyes to heal.from now on, i'll spend a little more on something that isn't going to irritate my eyes. there must be a reason it's so cheap, right?only gave it 1 star because i had to.
Love my makeup...and I love having big wide open eyes, helped mostly by a good nights sleep and an effective mascara. I bought Maybelline Great Lash Waterproof Mascara from Superdrug on a 3 for 2 offer (fab deal as I got my makeup and concealer and mascara for £13, well pleased!). However not overly pleased with the results of my new mascara, the reasons for this as well as some goood points will be detailed in this review.
Comes in a bright pink container with black lid making it eye catching (which is probably what drew me to it in the first place) 12.5ml in size. Usually around a fiver in price - so reasonable for a mascara as they are usually around £10. Wand is quite small.
Easiest to use with a close up mirror. Look up and apply to your upper lashes in slowish strokes ensuring you cover all lashes. As the wand is quite small it can be difficult to get all your lashes in one go.
- Comes in a smallish container so easy enough to throw in your bag, and does not take up much room in your make up bag.
- Stylish bright pink container, eyecatching and trendy looking
- Reasonable price from a good quality brand compared to other mascaras
- Non clumpy
- Waterproof (as stated on pack) and really is WATERPROOF!! I have shed many a tear while wearin tthis mascara and it has lasted
- Does not give overly good coverage on lashes. I required quite alot of coats as I like my mascara to be really really black
- Small wand makes it difficult to get get good coverage all over lashes
- Does not really give lashes any real volume
I now use this mascara for my work only, it is decent and at its price it performs its main function however it is not really what I like in a mascara. I like one which goes on quiet thick, makes you look as if you have tons of long black lashes - this product did not really do it for me I'm afraid. Fine for work in my opinion but not really ideal if your getting glammed up!
Thanks for reading x
Maybelline Great Lash Mascara
For every girl out there this is one make up proudct that you must always have in your make up bag!! I absolutely love this product and wouldn't be without it.
This comes on the usual blister card with all the information on the back. I find this slightly annoying as I like to be able to pull the brush out to see what it look sliek and how it is shaped. I bought this product from Boots for only £4.99! This price is an absolute bargain, usually mascaras can range from £10 upwards!
The tube is bright pink with a green lid and loos really funky and young looking. No girl would be ashamed to show off this tube! the lid easily wides off, the wand is one of the smallest I have ever seen but there is a good reason for this. The first is that it easily fits into your bag and the second is that I have found you have much more control when applying the mascara. The wand is black and the brush is short but thick and chunky.
This mascara holds an incredible 12.5ml. This is a lot for a mascara. My L'Oreal one only holds 7ml and cost twice as much!
Open your eye wide and start as close the the eye line as possible starting at the inner eye. A tip is to wiggle the brush as you bring it up to the tips of your eye lashes this gives a much better effect. Keep repeating this process all along the length of your eye until you achieve a even and long lenth look.
The finish I achieved with this mascara was fantastic, most mascaras you either get length or fullness but with this you get both, long and full lashes. I use the 'Blackest Black' for maximum effect, if you wanted it to look more natural you could chose brown/black.
I would rate this mascara a 10/10
what a horrible product, would not recommend at all. red, itchy and swollen eyes is what I got from it
i have had sore eyelids now since before christmas just realized it was maybelline great lash that was causing it have been using it for years so never suspected that it was causing this allergy I have changed everything spent a fortune on creams been to the doctors three times and have now been referred to the skin clinic I have stopped using it now for a week and my eyelids are still not back to normal can i sue maybelline for this
Waterproof / Conditions as it thickens / All day wear / No clumps, globs or smudges / Contact lens safe and hypoallergenic /
