Maybelline Volum Express One By One Mascara
Advantages: Long Lashes,
Disadvantages: Price, not waterproof
If you read my reviews you will know I'm on a never-ending search for an amazing mascara which meets my extremely high expectations. So far none of the brands or versions I have tried has fit my criteria 100%.
Nor does this specific product but it does come pretty close.
This newish product comes in a pink tube which stands on a small circular base, fattens out in the middle and peaks to another flat end on the top of the lid. The mascara comes in two parts, the tube and the wand which also doubles up at the lid. Between the two is a turquoise band which stops the two from slightly sticking. This design feature also prevents the lid from cracking where is may be screwed on too tightly, something I have had problems with, with older styles.
To complement the pink, the text is also in the turquoise colour and which it's not the easiest to read there is minimal information on the actual product so it's not really a problem. Bizarrely the information on my product is in English and Polish and reads "The Lash Catcher" - Captures, Coats and Cleans. The English version of this text is at the top of a picture of the brush and is curved over it whist the Polish version is curved underneath it. The text effectively frames the image of the brush.
It has the Maybelline New York name followed by Parisian and Polish addresses. However this product was made in Italy and contains just 10.4ml. There are no ingredients on the product itself.
When I bought this product it was on one of Superdrug's offer stands where all the tubes are stood in a section on the corner of an aisle so it was immediately brought to my attention.
The wand itself screws on and takes three turns to undo before pulling from the tube. The head of the wand is approximately 1inch in length and is covered in rubber bristles of approximately 2ml in length in the middle. Towards the ends the bristles get smaller so they create a curve effect on the wand head. There are about 27 bristles (of varying lengths) in each row and about 12 rows in total. The shape is very feminine and curvy. This design feature is shown on the tube, wand itself and then recreated on the head of the wand.
Application is extremely easy. This wand picks up enough product to coat all the bristles without drowning them in mascara. This means that when the mascara is transferred to the eyelashes they are not too heavily coated and therefore if you happen to blink there is less transference to the area below the lashes.
I work my top lashes first from the inner to the outer ones, gently moving the brush side to side to curl them as I go. This creates finer definition and prevents clumping. I apply the same technique to the lower lashes but with mine I find that I do tend to get mascara on my face as my lashes are quite long and low. Some people choose to coat both sides of the lashes for the extra-long look. Personally I don't, but that is because I find I do not need to.
This is the first mascara I have ever used which has given the long lash look without clumping. The rubble bristles separate my lashes well and the whole lashes are easily coated with one dip into the tube. If I am looking for a more dramatic effect I often apply a second coat once the first has dried. This also works well and doesn't look overdone in anyway.
The mascara lasts all day as you would expect with any product and removal is also extremely easy. I often use my normal facial wash in the bath or shower and find I have panda eyes when I get out. If you rub your eyes underwater with this product on you will find your hands black as well as your face. This is not a waterproof product and can be washes off with water to a certain extent. I tend to follow my bath or shower with either a face wipe to remove the remaining product or simply a wet cotton pad. Either option works equally well.
Here lies the only reason this product does not 100% meet my criteria. I love waterproof mascara, but when I found this in the shops I couldn't get a waterproof version, perhaps I am just looking in the wrong place.
When it comes to replacing this product I will be replacing it like for like. I love it, it gives me spidery eyelashes which do not look clogged up and have clear definition. Mine is black which highlights my eye colour well, though I do believe that it is also available in brown and can be found in most high-street pharmaceutical stores such as BOOTs and Superdrug.
Retails at £8.49 I bought it at £5.99 on offer. Superdrug currently have a 3 for 2 on products.
Summary: Good effective Black mascara
