Disadvantages: None
Maybe she's born with it......
I have used Maybelline mascara for years now, mainly because my mum uses it and when I was a kid I was always fascinated by the pink and green mascara wand (this is apparently America's number 1 mascara) and so as an adult just naturally gravitated towards that. Maybelline great lash mascara has always been my wand of choice but this time when I ran out I decided to try a different product in their range.
Maybelline, as most of us know is a makeup brand which is owned by L'Oreal and sold worldwide. The company was founded in 1913 by a chemist in New York, T.L. Williams, hence the New York connection to this day. Mr Williams was inspired by his sister, Maybell when he saw her applying a home made remedy to her lashes in order to make them darker and fuller. A few experiments in his laboratory and Maybelline was born.
The Volume Express Mascara promises to give you 3 times the lash volume instantly and I was looking for a little va-va-voom as I don't have the thickest lashes so I decided to give this one a try.
The whole product itself is a bit bulky and not slim line like some mascara's so it takes up a bit more room in your makeup bag but this is not necessarily a disadvantage. The thickness of it makes it quite easy to grip and so makes for a steadier hand whilst applying the mascara. The amount of this mascara is 10ml. The outer casing is a dark blue colour and it has Maybelline written on it. It is not as easily recognisable as the Great Lash mascara but still looks nice.
The brush is quite long and thick. It is made up of both short bristles and long bristles. The short bristles are meant to build maximum volume whilst the long bristles comb through the lashes and separate them for an even finish. I found this brush really nice and easy to use. It did seem to separate my lashes and a lot more of the liquid transfers onto my lashes than normal. Also, with this brush I can almost cover all the length of my eyelashes in one stroke as compared to other mascaras which need a few goes because their brushes are shorter.
The brush is meant to be an anti-clump brush too. I'm not too sure what classifies an anti-clump brush but I didn't really get a very big unwanted build-up on the lashes which was nice. The liquid coats well though and is quite thick and does look very professional. Is it 3 times more volume, well, I don't know, it's hard to say but my lashes do look longer and fuller so I am pleased with the results.
There are some instructions for use listed on the packaging. For best results we are told to "Gently sweep mascara through lashes, taking care to start as close to the root of the lash as possible to create a full, even look." This advice comes straight from Maybelline New York's Celebrity Make-Up Artist, Fiona Jolly,
I bought the waterproof version which was quite good for a waterproof version of mascara. It didn't really smudge when my eyes watered but it was quite easy to remove at the end of the day with a good quality make up remover. The mascara does come in a regular version too.
The other great thing I like about this mascara too it that it is ophthalmologically tested, basically meaning that it is suitable for contact lens wearers. I wear contact lenses and am forever getting makeup in my eye that my optician tells for off for so hopefully with this mascara even if I do get some in my eyes it will not harm the contacts or my eyes.
It is also said to contain soft plant waxes that gently condition lashes but to be honest who knows whether their lashes are conditioned or not!
This mascara cost me £4.99 from Boots but can be found in most high street beauty stores. A product I recommend.
