I have already done a review on my HD mascara, (a Max factor mascara) but before that one, this was the mascara i reached for everyday without failure. I was very upset when they updated and changed the formula slightly, and it wasn't as good. I can still find this on ebay sometimes, but it is not as easily available.
I don't think I ever bought this full price, but my ebay history tells me I bought it off there for £3.19, which is beyond cheap, my slightly older self now knows, but back when i was about 16, I had no money, hence the hunt for a complete bargain.
This mascara is unique in that you apply 2 coats. The first, a white one to lengthen your lashes, and the second a black one to add volume. The main problem with this was that when in a rush as I frequently am in the mornings I would take both ends off before i used the wand, which sometimes meant that when i went to put them back in the tube I would put the white wand in the black tube or vice versa, oops!! Which then meant I had to run to the sink and clean the darn thing so the 2 formulas didn't mix! I did learn quite a useful twizzle to flip the wand ends round without getting mascara over my fingers, but it did take about a week to properly get used to the way of applying the mascara without getting it everywhere. I have therefore removed a star on the rating for this.
The product itself:
Having moaned about the packaging, the 2 formulas really do what they are supposed to. The white part does lengthen, and the black part does add volume. It wasn't a ridiculous amount of volume, but certainly enough to make my lashes thicken and stand out. I had to be careful when applying the black over the white, i had few instances when friends went 'you've got some white stuff on your lashes' but generally I didn't have to many issues with it, as long as I allowed the white formula to dry first. It lasted most of the day without smudging, although I did normally have darker under-eyes by 4pm, having applied it at 7am, which isn't too bad going. It was relatively easy to remove with cheap makeup wipes as well. I have used the updated version of this product, which isn't anywhere near as good.
I purchased this mascara a while ago when I saw it on offer in Superdrug, as I always like to make sure I have a spare one. I think I got it as part of a 3 for 2 offer, but I can't remember what I paid for it. I can't seem to find it in any shops now, and so I'm wondering if it's been discontinued.
When I purchased this mascara, I musn't have looked properly at the packaging, as I didn't realise that it had two different fluids to apply. I presumed it was the usual type of mascara with just one application brush, and if I would of known you have to apply two different coats, I probably wouldn't of purchased it. I think the thing that drew me to this mascara over the others was that the packaging was quite striking in black and red, with the words 'intense black' appealing to me, as I like my lashes to be really dark.
In order to apply this mascara, you have to first apply the white fluid, using the applicator brush labelled as number 1. This first coat is meant to give your lashes volume. Without giving the white coat time to dry, you are then supposed to apply the black mascara, using applicator brush number 2, in order to give your lashes an 'intense' black colour.
I have found it fairly easy to apply this product. Once I had applied it a few times, I found the product fairly easy to hold and manoeuvre around my lashes. I haven't had an issue with the mascara clumping and the right amount of both fluids is easy to apply. The only negatives about this mascara have to be concerning the fact that there are two different fluids that you have to apply. My mascara is always the last item of make-up I apply before leaving the house, and so by this point I'm often in a great rush! I'm used to being able to quickly apply a coat onto each set of lashes with ease, but having to apply a white and then black coat means that it takes a great deal more time. Because you've applied a coat that is white to your lashes, it means that you also have to take time to ensure that you cover your lashes with enough of the black mascara so that there is no white visible. It is therefore much quicker to use a normal mascara.
In terms of results, I have to say I have been rather impressed. I found it to be a bit of a pain at first to apply two different coats of product, especially when I thought it would just make my lashes look the same as they do after using other mascaras. However, every time I apply this product I feel that my lashes look really long, much longer than they do after using the other Maybelline mascaras I have tried. My husband and I were looking at the photographs we took on our honeymoon and as soon as I saw a picture of me looking up slightly, the first thing I said was 'how long do my eyelashes look?!' They really did look lovely and very long, and I was very impressed!
In summary, I have been very impressed with the results of this mascara. My lashes look very black and long, with no clumps of mascara. The only negative things about this mascara are that it takes time to apply and you have to make sure you cover up all of the white product. Surely Maybelline could combine the two liquids into one mascara that is just as effective and quicker to apply?
I don't usually completely slate products because I often think your experience of something is very subjective. When writing reviews I usually try to give a fair review based on whether the product might be useful to other consumers but with this mascara I'm going to have to be 100% honest.
I bought this at a discount store for £3.99. I picked it up among a mixture of other mascaras, some known brands and others not. I chose this because generally I really like maybelline mascaras. It was also one of the few that was black, my colour preference, and I do like these double ended mascaras. I also thought £3.99 was probably half of what you'd pay in a store so it seemed like a good deal.
The mascara comes in a very short looking black tube. It is double ended so there is a section in the middle which the brushes are attached to and then two pots either end that contain the mascara fluids. This design is pretty standard for a mascara of this type and I thought the little size was quite cute and easy to hold, boy how wrong was I?
Okay, so my first issue is the length of the tube. Each pot is maybe only 4/5 cm away from the middle section, making the brushes on around 3/4 cm away from the middle section. You have to hold the mascara near the middle and therefore not only is your arm an obstruction but the middle section is very close to your eye making application really difficult/impossible.
My second issue is the brushes. They are curved in the most unnatural way that I can't imagine follows the line of any person's eyelashes. They are also relatively short and have a sharp metal bit at the end of the brush. This makes it very difficult and also painful to apply the mascara. You are already struggling with the middle section getting in the way so the last thing you need is an increased chance of scratching your eye.
My next problem is that the brushes seem to pick up very little mascara fluid. Either this or there is barely any inside the pots. It could be a combination of both in fact but either way I find this wholly disappointing and a complete hindrance to applying this mascara. I've found that my eyelashes barely get any coverage and this is probably as a combination of the three issues above.
My final issue is that even once you've gone through the battle of applying this mascara the fluid that does finally reach your eyelashes is both very sticky and takes ages to dry AND it extremely difficult to wash off when you inevitably get it on the skin around your eye.
I'm sorry, but who did they test this on? I can't imagine, from my years of mascara application experience, that I'm missing a trick here. I have to say this is simply the most ill thought out mascara design I have ever come across and I am thoroughly annoyed about it.
Overall, what a waste of money - glad I only paid £3.99 and not full price. AVOID AT ALL COST.
I purchased Maybelline Intense mascara from ebay for £3.95 with free postage, I would say this is a really good price for this mascara (or for any brand of mascara for that matter) as I have seen it elsewhere at about £8.00 - if my memory serves me well. At the price of £3.95 I wouldn't be heart broken if it wasn't excellent.
This mascara is a bit different to your normal one, it has two ends with two brushes, one has a white subsentence microfibre I believe, which provides volume and length, then the the other brush provides the colour (extreme black in my case). And it does exactly that it provides a good length and volume. I would say it almost provides the effect of a false lashes, in my case. I was also found of the colour provided - extreme black in colour and in name.
This mascara also claims to be waterproof and it certainly lives up to this claim, a wet wipe will not remove this mascara which I use to remove my make up daily and neither would excessive rubbing with water. So it definitely lives up to its claim of being water proof with real staying power. So for this reason I will be investing in a good cream to remove eye make up.
Whilst this mascara doesn't smudge it does have a tendency to clump so i would try not to apply too much or rub your eyes whilst on.
Conclusively for £3.95 I couldn't go wrong with this mascara whilst it takes a bit longer to apply than other one brush mascara and longer to remove it certainly does improve length and volume.
My review on Maybelline Intense XXL Volume + Length Mascara :I tried this product years ago when it first came out and have used it every since! You apply the white end first to both lashes I swerve my brush from the outside corner to the inside corner around 3 times.Next on to THE DARK SIDE, and this is where my cruella deville line comes from, looking in the mirror one side black and the other side white. Well. Just make sure you but the black masara on both sides. You can buy this from all drug stores - boots, superdrug, bodycare etc. for around £5.99 - CHEAPER ONLINE!I always buy this but sometimes I put another black on top. This mascara both lengthens & seperates lashes perfectly!Would reccomend to all. Hope you liked my review, I look forward to seeing feedback :D
After soo many years of looking for the perfect mascara for my short and few eye lashes, I was happy to find Maybelline XXL Intense. It comes with two brushes on each side of the mascara. One is with white solution and the other one is black. First you use the white one which will give you the volume, even though I usually apply it a few times, before I use the black one. After using the white one, wait for a few seconds after it dries a bit and then apply the black one to give you the black finnish. You will get a better results. Not only your lashes get the volume, but even long length.
What I find with most mascaras though is, they get better over time, when the solution inside starts drying up a bit. When the solution inside the mascara is too watery, it just glides off your eyelashes.
Also another hint is, to use bit of powder over your eye lashes so the eyelashes are not greasy before applying any mascara.
I usually buy this mascara on E Bay for about £4, so I don't pay the highstreet price which is over £8 usually.
I wont buy any other mascara again.
==Maybelline XXL Pro Mascara==
I am terrible for constantly buying different types of mascara and trying to find that elusive one which does actually do what it claims. I have got a few favourite but I still keep trying ones I haven't used just to see if I can get better results.
This last mascara I have is from Maybelline which is one of my preferred brands when buying mascara. The price was pretty much a standard one at around the £8 mark as I think there was a slight bit of money off as there usually is.
The mascara is one of those ones that is made up of two different parts. At first I thought this may be a different approach as I usually steer away from these types of products for time saving and hassle factor. The stick of mascara has two screw cap ends and the lids come out to reveal a brush in each. The first step of applying this mascara is to use the number 1 labelled end which is the brush that has the white mascara product. This goes onto the lashes to supposedly to lengthen and thicken the lashes before the second layer of mascara goes on. The second brush has the black mascara product on and this goes on the lashes once the white has been applied.
The mascara itself is not too bad as it of a good consistency and glides on to the lashes with relative ease. The brush is a good shape and this seems to aid the product being distributed well onto all the lashes. The applicators are not especially easy to use just because they are actually the dumpy lids of the mascara which are not the largest to hold and this makes it a little easier to drop the brush or get it into a difficult position.
The overall look of the mascara is pretty good although I wouldn't say it is the best I have ever tried. I still think applying the two different products to the eyelashes takes up more time than I have most mornings and probably doesn't make the product work that much more than others that don't have this two step application.
All in all I can't say that it is a mascara that I shall be buying again. It is an okay one that I will be happy to use up but I can't say I would wholly recommend this as there are far better products out there for the same price that do a better job.
I think a score of 2 out of 5 stars is fair for this product and not really a recommendation I am afraid.
Many thanks for taking the time to read.
I do hope that this has been of some help/interest to you.
