As a subscriber to Glossy Box each month I receive a selection of beauty products; the majority of which I've never tried before. As a result, it gives me the opportunity of trying out new products at a fraction of the recommended retail price. Contained inside one of my recent boxes was a 20 ml bottle of Monu Professional Skincare Illuminating Primer SPF 15, which is suitable for all skin types.
I am very particular about my appearance and as a consequence, since my teenage years, I have invested a lot of time and money on products to care for my T-zone skin, which is oily on my forehead and nose with dryness on my cheeks. I wear full make up every time I leave my home and adore the appearance of flawless skin, which I am only able to achieve with products due to the fact that I have a few imperfections.
My introduction to skin primers was earlier this year and whilst I was satisfied with my mousse foundation, I was keen to learn how a primer would improve the appearance of the skin on my face. Prior to receiving my product I was totally unaware of the brand Monu Professional Skincare who specialise in high quality skincare which is natural and kind to the environment.
The brand strives to reach the highest of standards with their products not being tested on animals, they manufacture locally, use recyclable packaging, adopt a no airfreight policy in addition to locally sourcing all of their ingredients, which are free of synthetic perfumes or colours.
Despite my 20 ml plastic bottle being smaller than the full sized 50 ml version, it offers a flip top lid, which enabled me to squeeze out a small amount of the pure white fragrance free product, which offers a consistency similar to that of a face cream. The primer should be applied to the face and neck directly after cleansing and toning and despite its consistency I found it easy to spread although it was necessary to apply a few further applications to fully cover the face and neck. However, it required a little more rubbing over the skin when making a comparison with a face cream as otherwise it tends to nestle on the surface leaving it with a white almost chalky looking appearance.
The primer initially felt quite tacky to the touch following application and whilst this reduced after it was fully absorbed into the skin, there was still a slight tackiness remaining with the surface of the skin being soft and smooth, which created the perfect base for the application of foundation. The effects of the primer were evident as soon as it had been absorbed, particularly on my nose and forehead, as the shine was replaced with a matt appearance. Whilst Monu claim that the skin will appear illuminated due to the light reflective formulation, I am unable to agree with this, but I was more than satisfied due to the eradication of the shine.
The primer is packed with beneficial ingredients such as vitamin E, which is an antioxidant that will fight free radicals, cassia alata leaf extract, which will reduce visible signs of aging and protect the skin against sun damage together with zinc oxide, which provides a barrier against the sun's harmful rays. The primer didn't feel as comfortable on the skin as I had hoped, as it offered a very slight tightness on my cheeks and I prefer my skin products to feel light so that I can forget that I am wearing them. I initially believed that this sensation would vanish and on a positive note, I was easily able to apply my mousse foundation over the surface.
Whilst I am generally able to achieve a flawless appearance by using a mousse foundation, during the hot weather or when I am in a centrally heated office, the oily areas of my skin, such as my nose and forehead can often break through the foundation and as a result, I need to touch them up with a dusting of face powder. The primer seemed to reduce the need for this process, but I continued to feel a slight tightness in my cheeks throughout the day, which is similar to the sensation when a peel off face mask is starting to dry. However, I cannot speak of suffering any dryness or adverse effects whilst using.
Whilst the primer met its claim of giving my skin a flawless finish, my experience has evidenced that it is not suitable for those with dry skin due to the tightness I felt in my cheeks. I was also disappointed that the 30 ml bottle lasted me only ten or so uses, which deems the 50 ml bottle with its cost of £24.95 to be a costly purchase. You can obtain Monu Professional Skincare Illuminating Primer directly from their website although I do not feel it is a product that I can recommend and due to the reasons discussed above, I feel only two stars to be appropriate.
I hope you found my review useful and thanks for reading.
