Eye spy a good buy - MUA eyeshadow
Member Name: ryeb
Advantages: Easy to apply, excellent level of coverage and colour, longlasting
Disadvantages: No brush included
I don't wear eyeshadow evveryday in the same way that I do mascara. I have bought vast palettes in the past with the idea of experimenting with different looks, only to find that I let most of them go to waste. I am sceptical about use-by dates on some make-up, but having had an awful eye infection once, I don't take a chance with out of date eye products. So I decided to buy some individual eye colours, and the first range I decided to look at was Superdrug's Make Up Academy [MUA] collection. This is because I have had great success with other MUA items such as lipstick - and everything in the standard range costs just £1.
I find that the larger branches of Superdrug tend to offer the best range of colours. My nearest shop is quite small and only sells around 8 shades, whereas the closest large branch offers approximately 17 colours. You can also buy the eyeshadows from Superdrug online, but be aware that some of the colours look quite different to me to the ones I have at home. It is probably a good idea to have a look at an actual tester if you really want a particular look. You can choose from matte or pearl finishes, with the majority of colours being available in the former. I have some of both, 6 colours in total. My current 2 favourites are no.27, an oyster colour, and 30, a warm gold. I like the range of shades offered - I feel it covers all the basic ones that you would expect to see, such as browns and blues, plus a few different shades such as bright green. If you want a large choice of neon like colours though, you would probably be better off with other ranges. I like a more natural look myself, so I can find plenty that suit my eyes.
Each eyeshadow measures 2g, so a low price doesn't mean you are getting less for your money. They come in a standard compact-style pot, with a flip top lid. The packaging doesn't look especially high quality, and it isn't attractive in itself. The base is cheap looking black plastic, and the top is clear. I thought the whole thing looked a bit flimsy when I first bought it, and I expected the hinges to break. However, I have carried one around in my bag on several occasions, and it is still in one piece. Crucially, so is the powder itself. I hate having an eyeshadow that crumbles apart after a time, as it is so wasteful.
The eyeshadow doesn't come with an applicator - not even one of the small sponge tipped ones. I am not bothered by this as I have plenty of suitable brushes, and even if MUA had provided one, I would have still used my own. I can understand how this could be annoying to some people though. I like the fact that using a "proper" brush is easier with this compact than many others, as it has a wide surface area - a bit larger than a £2 coin.
I have found this eyeshadow a joy to use, as it applies easily and smoothly. It feels soft, and plenty adheres to the brush without it becoming overloaded. It glides over the eyelids, and I have to say that it provides one of the most even coverage of any eyeshadow that I have tried. It also blends with other colours very easily and naturally. This has been so useful to me when I was experimenting with using more colours and effects than I would normally. It is easy to vary the finished look by applying more or less, for a a subtle or more dramatic result. Due to it's general ease of use, I would say this would be a good product for those new to using eyeshadow to try.
I thought that the eyeshadow looked highly pigmented in it's packaging and it doesn't disappoint on the eye lid either. The level of coverage is excellent, and the finish looks smooth and high quality. I don't need to use a primer with this at all. It genuinely lasts all day. I once accidently fell asleep with it on, and it was still there the next morning, 24 hours after applying and hardly faded. I love the fact I can put in on the morning and not have to worry about re-applyng it. This doesn't mean it is hard to remove though - a basic make up remover deals with it quickly.
The pearl shades have a softly shimmering look. It is a stronger effect than I expected from the look of the eyeshadow in the compact, but it isn't like wearing a glitter colour. It looks good in the daytime as well as for evenings. I think it draws attention to your eyes, and that's what it's there for!
As the eyeshadow feels soft to touch, I expected it to wear down quickly, but it hasn't. I have owned some for 6 months, and they are hardly dented, although I must say that I switch between various colours and do not use each one every day.
I have never suffered irritation from using eyeshadow, and this was no exception, but I can't advise whether this product is likely to be suitable for those with sensitive skin.
WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS EYESHADOW?
As you may have guessed, I like this a great deal! I think MUA have come up with a product that would be good at twice the price - or more. The colours are properly pigmented, the colour adheres easily to the lid and then stays in place all day. What more could I ask for? The only downside is the lack of a brush, but as they are easy to get hold of, I am not going to complain given the price paid. I would recommend this eyeshadow to anyone.
