This is a review of Nails Inc Caviar Base Coat. I have used three bottles of this now in the last year or two and so feel now is a good time to review the product. It may seem a bit of a waste spending a lot of money not even on the nail colour you're going for but the base is a foundation tool and sets the scene for perfect nails. It also protects your nails so if you're wanting to keep them nice it might be worth considering this product.
What's it like?
The caviar base coat is a pinky colour and when it is on the nail you cna see the colour a little. Once you have brushed it on, you need to let it dry for a couple of minutes before adding the colour you are going to wear. It is a little tacky for a few minutes.
I actually use the base coat on days when I am not planning a nail colour as it's a great neutral colour and helps strengthen and protect my nails. I also use it at a prep for any colour going on. especially dark.
The base coat goes on thinly and you only use one coat. This is great as you don't want a lot of thickness on your nail or your varnish will be more likely to peel off once dried. Three swoops and the nail is covered with the brush that is in the lid of the varnish.
I will say that once you get to the bottom of this bottle, it does get a bit gloopy and thick and not like when you first open and use a new one. Some beauty mags recommend a drop of nail varnish to thin gloopy polish but I don't think it works with this base. That is a little annoying when you have paid the full price for this product!
If buying separately, this base coat retails at £12 and you can get it online on Amazon or from department stores like Debenhams. The best way to buy it though is in a gift set eg. at Christmas it tends to be included in some of the sets and this is how I got at least two bottles of the stuff. It brings the unit cost down and you get lovely colours to play with too!
I love this stuff and find the bottles last a while if left unopened. It does look a bit strange as the colour is slightly 'milky' in the bottle but it looks fine on the nail. I also use with the Caviar top coat and the caviar hand cream so feel I am getting maximum performance form this product. When I have had a nails inc manicure in store, they have used the base and top coat from the Caviar range and it has lasted ages. When I do a home mani, and use the same products I know I will get three days out of a dark mani and around five days from a lighter more neutral polish.
This is an expensive polish so I would recommend paying attention to their gift sets and working out the unit price that way. They tend to do collections of their most popular colours so don't worry about getting landed with awful colours you won't use. Nails Inc is also easy to sell on ebay if you find yourself with unwanted products. I love their polishes and have found the performance of the base coat to be top notch. This is not a product you'll find being given away on the front page of Glamour either so if you want it you will have to fork out for it!
I love nail products: in fact I love any beauty products but I have a massive collection of nail products ranging across many brands. Of them all this is my most loved base coat.
The reasons for this? First of all, it has a different texture to most others that I have tried. Most base coats have the same texture as a polish and this one doesn't - it feels slightly lighter.
Secondly, it dries in next to no time. I am the world's most impatient nail painter! I hate having to wait for layers to dry and this is the quickest drying base coat I have found yet.
Lastly, it is good for my nails. Well as good as nail polish can be anyway. My nails do not get stained using this and I like to wear dark colours so it does get put to the test. Apparently it has got actual caviar in it as well which is meant to be good for your nails.
There is not a massive amount I can say about this except for try it. It is more expensive than your regular high street brands but I have not found one that can do the job like this one can. I personally think you are better to spend the money on a quality base coat and buy cheaper nail polishes than the other way round. The top coat is pretty fabulous too!
Nails Inc is my recent find and this base coat has been a saviour to me. I have been cutting back with my hair and beauty products recently but this was one thing I could not slip away from me. I absolutely hate my finger nails, I have the habit of biting them since I was very small but my toe nails are in great nick so I always paint them and I take very good care of them. My nail paint collection just seems to keep expanding.
This Kensington base coat set me back around £10.00 if not a little more but it is definitely worth it. So when I had taken my nail polish off and been in the bath to soften my nails, cut and filed them I applied this. I was so surprised I found it very easy to apply compared to the Rimmel brands although these are still great do not get me wrong. So the brush is very soft, I painted one coat on each of my nails and it gave a sort of light pink colour but not very noticeable, I then applied my dark colour of nail varnish which did to test how good this base coat is.
Two weeks later, I took my deep purple varnish off and I was so surprised, there was no staining to my nail at all, they looked very clean and in very good condition. I will definitely buy this again, but I can see it lasting a long time because only one coat was needed and it worked like magic!
Buy if you are looking to repair and maintain healthy nails.
Happy reading, Holly :)
Nails Inc Kensington Caviar Base Coat
I got this as part of a set lasts christmas which also included the top coat. I have not been able to find this on the nails inc official website but it is currently being sold on amazon for £11, and it is also on ebay.
It comes in a small bottle which is 10ml, and it has a really nice little nails inc series on hands at the top with a shiny screw top lid. The base coat is actually a pink colour but when I put it on to my nails it just turned to a clear see though colour.
You put this base coat on before you put your colour polish on, I have found that from my experience with this product that it does actually stop my nails from being stained by the colour nail polishes and if i don't use a base coat then I can tell the difference as my nail polish doesn't stay on as long, it is harder to take off if you don't have a base coat and it does stain my nails if i don't use this product!
I just use the base coat then colour then top coat and my nails look really nice, glossy, sparkly and the colour lasts ages because of the base and top coat. It also does not chip as easy with this product on. It also looks good on its own as a clear nail polish.
*A really good high quality brand - the base, top and treatment coats
*Quick, easy, effortless application
*Nice simple bottle with also simple clean cute packaging
*Not sold on the nails inc site any more but it can still be bought from ebay and amazon for about £11
*It is pink at first but then it goes clear
*Makes my nail colour stay on longer and it does not chip as easily
*A bit expensive but it is worth it as stops the colour polish from staining my nails
*Easy to take off
*Lasts a very very long time - does not run out quickly, as I have had mine for about a year and I still have about a third left
*Also good on its own as a clear polish
