The Nars Velvet Lip Pencil is a lip colour rather than a liner and is available in 17 colours. I have 3 colours: Damned - a plum colour, Cruella - a dark red and Dragon Girl - Bright Red (this seems to be no longer available according to the website)
The packaging is NARs standard black with a rubberised lid and comes in a black box with the NARs logo on. The chunky sizes means that you need a wider pencil sharpener to sharpen them.
The formulation is enriched with Vitamin E so goes on as a creamy colour despite this being a matte lipstick. The colour is really long lasting and doesn't smudge or fade which you eat and drink over the course of the day. It can be quite drying if you wear this all day although that may just be because I would ordinarily apply lip balm during the day if I weren't wearing this.
I've used Nars cosmetics on and off for a few years, and have always found them to be good quality. I was browsing in a branch of Space NK recently and thought I'd give the Velvet Matte Lip Pencil a try. I tried the testers on the back of my hand and was impressed with the highly pigmented colours, and with how little they smudged when I rubbed the swatches with my finger.
I chose the shade "Damned," which is a deep magenta/burgundy. The product comes in the usual Nars black packaging - plain but stylish. They're described as lip pencils, but the thickness is more like a crayon. The product weight is 2.4g (it seems like it would last a long time, so it's more than it sounds), and this will set you back around £17.50.
The ingredients list reads like one long, complicated science experiment, so I won't go into it here as I think it wouldn't mean much to most of us! One thing to highlight though is that the pencils contain vitamin E to stop them drying your lips. According to Nars they also contain "unique silicones," which apparently help keep the colours long-lasting.
The product is designed to be applied straight to your lips from the pencil. Although the pencil itself is quite thick, the point is tapered enough that you can be precise with the application and can outline your lips accurately and easily. The colour applies very smoothly, and is very intense and high in pigment. I find that the finish can feel a bit powdery at first. It doesn't look it, but it feels it to me straight after application. That feeling soon fades though, and it may be because I don't often use matte finish lip products.
The finish is definitely completely matte. I find that this looks neat and sophisticated, and a little more unusual than the glossy or semi-gloss finishes you tend to see everywhere. It doesn't look old-fashioned or chalky, and I've never felt that my lips were getting dry or uncomfortable. I can imagine though that if you have dry skin on your lips already, this product would really show that up.
If you find the colour a bit too much, you can just outline your lips lightly and then add a smudge of colour to the centre and blend it outwards. This gives you the same basic colour, but in a more wearable, diluted form - good if you want to adapt one of the darker shades so it's more suitable for day or office wear. The product looks good with gloss added over the top as well.
In terms of staying power, I'd give these pencils 8 out of 10. They're not immovable by any means, but they are long lasting and the colour stays true. The colour even stays on through eating, but you may want to touch up afterwards - I've found that when wearing such an intense colour as "Damned" during lunch, by the time I've finished the colour around the edges of my lips is noticeably darker than in the centre. The colour is easily removed during cleansing, and the pigment doesn't just get moved around your face like when you remove some of the long-lasting lipsticks.
Overall I'm a fan of this product, and will be trying it in more shades in future.
For my birthday, my friend bought me a "Love Set" from Nars containing the Velvel Matte Lip Pencil in "Sex Machine" along with a gloss and a blush.
I loved the colour immediately, and liked the fact that it was a matte pencil. It doesn't smudge, doesn't stick, and it's got a light texture so you don't feel like you are wearing something. It looks stylish because it is matte, so ideal to wear at work or on a daily basis if you want to add a bit of colour to your make up or look a bit glamorous without looking like Katie Price.
It doesn't dry the lips as it contains Vitamin E, and has a rather creamy texture that glides on your lips.
It stays on for quite a while as well, even if it does need touch up during the day, but nothing major! The only good thing about it though is that you can remove it without having streaks left on your lips due to high or strong pigments, unlike other pencils or lipsticks.
The colour I have is a kind of elegant old rose colour, and it is versatile as the more coats you apply, the deeper the colour looks, so you can use it for daytime with one coat or for night time with several coats.
