Hello, my name is Rachel and I’m a lipgloss-aholic. I just can’t help it. I love the way that lipgloss makes my lips look, so shiny and lovely, and drawing attention to your lips is never a bad thing. I own about 15 lipglosses, and am still on the quest to find the perfect one, but I came a definite step closer last week when I purchased ‘Nivea lip care – Caregloss & Shine’.

There are many things that one looks for in a lipgloss - colour, shine, price, packet, apply-ability, but above all, most importantly – staying power. Oh yes, you can have the perfect lipgloss but what’s the point if its gone in 5 minutes? So my mission has boiled down to a simple search for a lipgloss that stays on my lips.

Nivea Caregloss is a new product from the Nivea lip-care range that includes their ‘pearl & shine’ and ‘gold & shine’ lip balms. Here’s what they say about it;

“Nivea Lip Caregloss & Shine has been especially formulated by Nivea skin care experts to provide everyday care for your lips; whilst enhancing their natural beauty by adding a transparent glossy shine.”


----The Packet----
For those of you who know what a Lancome ‘juicy tube’ looks like, the Caregloss comes in an identically shaped tube. For those who don’t, the packet is rather like a 5cm long toothpaste tube. It is a pastel pink colour with a blue ‘Nivea’ oval on the front and ‘Caregloss & Shine written underneath. You buy it attached to a cardboard backing sheet. There is a screw off lid, and underneath a slanted end to make applying really easy. Just a small squeeze of the tube delivers more than enough lipgloss to cover your lips.

----Ingredients----
Caregloss & Shine contains macadamia nut oil, the natural wax of Candelilla leaves, Vitamin E and the all-important glossy pigments. These pigments themselves are extremely tiny and not visible individually, they just give the glossy effect.

----The Care, The Gloss and The Shine----

Nivea say that Caregloss & Shine does 4 things;

- Provides your lips with a perfect shine
Yup, I’ll go with this one. The shine you get depends on how much you apply, which is great; if you want a subtle effect you can have a tiny gloss and if you want the full on ‘movie premiere’ look you just need to add a little more gloss.

- Cares and protects your lips effectively
Hmm….debatable. Caregloss & Shine acts like a lipbalm in as much as it creates a barrier against the elements, but I cant notice any caring effect that you get with their lipbalms, in fact, when it has worn off I’d say that my lips feel less hydrated than before I applied it.

- Leaves a smooth, non sticky feeling on your lips
Smooth I’ll defiantly agree with but non-sticky…well, compared to my other lipglosses this is probably one of the least sticky; it’s quite easy to forget it’s on your lips, which I like. But if you don’t like sticky things on your lips you probably won’t like this.

- Smoother more supple lips with a glossy shine
I’d say your lips are smoother and suppler while the Caregloss stays on, but afterwards they will be back to normal, or perhaps in a little worse shape and in need of some lipbalm.

----How does it look?----
Applying a small amount of Caregloss & Shine gives an effect much like that of Vaseline when it is applied to your lips. It adds no colour, but it does add a lovely subtle gloss, which is just a tiny bit shiny. Adding more layers creates much more of a traditional ‘lipgloss’ look, quite wet and shiny, but unlike lots of lipglosses, not over the top. The lipgloss itself is a very pale pink colour and this starts to show a little if you add a second layer, but is still very subtle.

----How long does it last?----
I find it hard to judge the longest length that this could be, because when I apply lipgloss I can’t help constantly rubbing my lips together because they’re so slippery, which probably reduces the time it lasts rather significantly! But I’ll say, this stuff lasts about half an hour, but it wont last a meal or a few drinks. I’ve found that it lasts twice as long if I put a layer of Vaseline on first, then this on top.

----Should I buy it?----
If youre looking for a lipgloss that cares for your lips too, this is the one to go for, simply because it’s the only lipgloss I know that ‘cares’ for your lips too. But I’d say not many people are too bothered about a ‘caring’ lipgloss, they just want something that looks good and lasts. If you want something that’s good for your lips then buy a lipbalm, not this stuff. If you’re looking for a new lipgloss this could be a great choice if you’re looking for something subtle but nice, that lasts a reasonable time, you won’t be disappointed. It’s very versatile too, it would sit well on top of lipstick to add some shine, and for the price, you won’t feel bad about reapplying it whenever you want. It costs about £2.99 for 10ml, which will last a good while.
