I have used make-up items from the N.Y.C brand on and off over the past few years, mainly because I find their products can be a little hit and miss. I did make a number of purchases from the brand recently however, as my make-up bag was needing a bit of re-stocking. This review outlines my experiences of using the "NYC Cover Stick."
I purchased my Cover Stick in a local branch of Superdrug but I believe it can be purchased online from a variety of retailers. I paid in the region of £2 for my own stick, which I thought was fairly good value for money.
The packaging for the product is fairly simple, I must admit, although I did think the white and clear colours used on the plastic packaging offered a modern, 'minimalist' look which is quite attractive. This product resembles your average lipstick product, comprising of a 'stick' of concealer Cover Stick product contained within a cylindrical plastic tube. You simply need to remove the plastic outer cover to reveal the stick itself. Rotating the bottom of the 'inside tube' of the tube will of course rotate the stick itself, so it comes up through the plastic case.
I use a lot of products like this one, mainly because I suffer with unsightly dark patches around and underneath my eyes. This is caused by ill health and lack of sleep and I do struggle to cover up these patches and make them less noticeable. I find that applying a concealer product underneath powder, foundation, or other make up really goes a long way in helping me to the disguise this problem. In addition, I find that using a concealer product really helps to disguise blemishes and spots, and it is really an essential item as far as I (and my make up bag) are concerned.
Firstly, I found that the NYC Cover Stick was slightly thicker than my usual brand. That is not to say that it felt uncomfortable to apply, nor was it more fiddly or difficult, but I definitely noticed a difference in the density of the product itself. At first, I was concerned that the thick product was going to appear 'caked' on my skin which is not a particularly good look in my opinion! I was worried too that the finished result would look completely unnatural because of course the idea of using a product like concealer is to help disguise skin complaints and issues - not draw attention to them. Thankfully, I needn't have worried, as the thick product settles nicely on the skin, without any noticeable 'caked' effect taking hold. I found that in actual fact the thick nature of the Cover Stick was actually a good point, mainly because it seems to be a rather high quality product and so I found it covered 'problem areas' easily and completely, and with very minimal effort being required. I found really that a quick 'slick' of the stick under each eye was more than enough product to completely cover the problem areas.
I found too that the Cover Stick blends extremely easily, with very little effort required by myself. This makes it more convenient than other products that I use on a regular basis, that require quite a lot of blending with a cosmetic sponge or brush to get them to look (and feel) completely absorbed into the skin. For me, personally, anything that cuts down on the amount of time I need to stand in front of the mirror applying make up and cosmetics is a definite winner in my book, so full marks from me on that point.
I believe that the NYC Cover Stick is available in four or five different shades, ranging from a green toned stick that is aimed at helping to control redness, to a small choice of 'skin' coloured shades. I have the palest option that was available to me at the time of purchase, which is called "Natural" and I have found that this is suited to my natural skin tone pretty well. Whilst other brands have their palest colour to be about three shades darker than my near-porcelain natural complexion, I have found the NYC brand's choices to be slightly more suited to my own colouring. Another plus point for me, then. The colouring seems to suit my other make up items too, such as my powder, bronzer and tinted moisturiser which is convenient too, of course.
My sensitive skin has not suffered from using the product, and I have experienced nothing in the way of sensitivity or aggravation. Even though the product is used around the delicate eye area, it has caused no irritation here either.
I really don't have anything negative to report about the NYC Cover Stick and it is a concealer product that I will definitely buy again. For the reasons outlined in this review, I really feel that only top marks in the product rating score are deserved. The product comes with my full recommendation, as a result of my positive experiences.
The NYC Brand is available in larger branches of Superdrug, as well as being available from several online stockists, such as www.ebay.co.uk and www.fragrancedirect.co.uk. It is also available on the Superdrug website at (www.superdrug.com). You can expect to pay from £1 to £3 for the product, and postage costs may apply from some online stockists.
I really love this concealer, it's just a shame that the shade I use is now discontinued in store...
If anyone reads my other reviews they will know how much I hate stick concealers. Usually, they are too heavy, hard to blend, and just end up highlighting whatever it was you were trying to cover up!
This stick is different. I quite like NYC, and am often happy to give their products a go. When I found this for around £2, I thoght it just might change my opinion on stick concealers, and I was not wrong.
The idea is simple, it's a basic cover stick, in the usual format. The packaging is transparent, which is useful as you can see how much product that you have left.
The difference here, is that the product actually seems to liquify on contact. The heat from your body transforms the cream into a far more malleable product, meaning that a litlle goes a long way, and you get a far more flawless effect.
My shade of shoice was Yellow (sounds strange, bear with me) because it was the only yellow concealer available on the high street. A Yellow concealer balances out your skin, hiding redness really well. I used mine on spots, but also on occaisonal red patches. It is genius at covering sun burn!
Not to disappoint you, im sure that the yellow shade is available somewhere online. If you find it, buy it, you won't regret it!
So this is the very last of my NYC product reviews as Ive come to the end of my very early birthday gift set. To be honest I was chuffed to bits when I saw there was a concealer in my gift set because I had just ran out of my usual concealer so this prevented me from having to go out and spend my money on a new one. As Ive said in my two previous MYC reviews I have never tried their products before receiving this and after using the two different foundations from this set my opinions were sort of divided so I was hoping this would either be very bad or very good to push my opinion either way. I was hoping it would be very good but I decided not to get my hopes up too much.
So I started trying this out the day after I got it because Id been out the night before and the underneath of my eyes looked a lot less than perfect so I hoped that this would help hide those horrible bags.
Now you apply this exactly like you would a lipstick but obviously underneath your eyes or directly onto any spots or blemishes your hoping to hide so the application is very easy. I have a friend who use a brush to apply hers even though it is in the same form as this one but I just think thats unecassary to be honest. Why complicate things?!
Now I do have a slight problem with this and that is that it is VERY hard to rub into your skin. As soon as you apply it you can feel how thick it is and it is incerdibly hard to try and blend in. When you do manage to rub it in however it does work really well. I think the thickness actually works to your advantage in a way because it does offer great coverage when its applied right.
I was actually really impressed with how well this worked because it did cover up all my dark circles and spots for the time I used it. Also it didnt fade or change colour (Ive had that happen with others!) and I reckon it lasted a good 5 hours before I needed to re-apply. If you have a good skin tone I reckon that with just this concealer you could get great coverage but I tend to get best results when I use it with my foundation and powder as well.
My only problem with this was down to my own stupidity. About a week after I started using this I was applying it in the mirror in my bathroom and me being me I was way to heavy handed with the stick and it broke off and fell down the toilet which is dircetly underneath the mirror.
Bad times for me because I really liked using this and I felt it worked really well. Im definately going to be stocking up on this again when my latest Dooyoo cheque arrives. :)
I found that this worked really well and I do recommend it if you dont mind taking a little bit of extra time when it comes to applying. The results that this gives are greta though and I cant fault NYC there, I just wish they made it easier to rub into your skin. Then I wouldnt have to knock a star off.
