I recommend this product without hesitation... but bear in mind my limited scope for comparison!

I use make up only rarely. But I do like to "put a face on" for a special occasion or night out, so I have a very limited make up bag. Nevertheless I figured I could still offer some worthwhile reviews of the products I have from a occasional user/beginner's viewpoint.

This NYC Eyeshadow is one of my most recent purchases, it cost £2.99 in Superdrug, thereby meeting my first criteria - cheap! I realise that sounds pretty bad, but I don't like spending some of the top prices for a product that I use so rarely and that often in the past is gone past its best long before I've used it up.

This little pallete measures 8cm x 4cm and is about 1cm deep, so it's very compact and doesn't have a huge quantity of the eyeshadow in there. The lid of the box has a transparent panel to see the colours and the rest is black with the silver "NYC" logo printed on the front.

The main attraction of this particular pack for me, though, was the information leaflet on the back. The pallete contains 4 complimentary shades (the ones I bought are browns, but there were also pinks, blues, greens, purples etc) and the leaflet on the back shows a diagram of whereabouts on the eyelid and around the eye the various shades should be applied for the best effect.

I know that makes me sound pretty pathetic(!), but not being a regular user of make up I was forever questioning whether something looked silly once I'd applied it, and not being brave enough to apply more than one shade, let alone knowing how to make four shades work together to finish your eye make up off. With this, the information is reassuring, and all the four shades you need to create an effect are all contained in the one pack.

When you open the compact there is a plastic protective insert which also reiterates this information and lifts easily off. Inside is also a small double-ended applicator - one end a pad, one end a little brush, again, useful if you don't have an array of brushes in stock.

I find this particular eyeshadow easy to apply, it picks up easily onto the brush or pad and it stays where you put it, you can see it usually with a single stroke! Again, if you're not particulalry adept at applying make up this is really important. In terms of how well it lasts I am probably not the best to say because I only wear it for a night out, rather than ever using it all day, but I have never needed to reapply.

I definitely recommend this product if there is anyone out ther as make-up naïve or phobic as me! It gives me that bit more confidence when applying it that I'm doing the right thing and doing it the right way. In fact I would go as far as to say that for a cheap product it is one of my favourite make up items I've ever bought.

Another excellent product to come out of Superdrug!

Many of my make up reviews in recent weeks have been about items that I have purchased from Superdrug. This store has undergone a transformation in recent months and now sells many ranges unique to its own stores. Many of these lines are not only very cheap indeed but they are beautiful, and even better they are recommended by make-up artists.

NYC- The Metro Quartet Eye Shadows
      -------------------------------------------
Eye shadows in particular are absolutely outstanding from this store, and the review I am doing today concerns the range sold by NYC- The Metro Quartet Eye Shadows. These retail for only £2.99 and come in so many different shades and represent tremendous value for money.

It is only in the last few years that I have worn eye make up with any frequency, and in many ways I think this is because I was unsure how to apply it especially when using several colours. I have learned over the years techniques which have helped me to achieve the look that I want, and in this respect the shadows sold by NYC offer a perfect introduction for someone new to using eye products. They also offer a choice for experienced users who wish to benefit from the shade collections that have been chosen to complement each other so well. The reason I say these shadows are excellent for the beginner is because they have four shades, and in the palette these are covered loosely by a plastic sheet which has the words- "all over lid, contour, highlight and crease" written so that it corresponds to the shade concerned. In essence it is like painting by numbers, but the confidence this gives is excellent. I have also seen this system used in the Wet and Wild range sold in the USA which also has fantastic shade combinations. You can't see this sheet in the Dooyoo photo which is a shame, but it is replaceable after use so is a perfect reminder each time you use it. Also supplied is a small dual ended sponge applicator. I don't use this myself as I prefer to use my own brushes.

      A Range of Shades
      ----------------------
The eye shadows themselves are very pigmented, some are shimmery within the palette some are more matte, and they apply easily and last all day which is just brilliant for the money. They have exciting shade names all reflecting the "Metro" concept. In my collection I have shades 795B - Manhattan Island- this is a beautiful collection of blues and greys with a silvery shade for the crease. I also have a green variant called Riverside Park (shade 794B) which is a lovely collection of pale green and grey with a silvery cream highlight. I also have two neutral palettes which I wear most often- 818A Union Square and 815A The Best of Broadway. These are both beautiful peach and brown palettes that allow you to create a lovely faded sunset look- in fact these are some of my favourite neutral collections.

      Ideal For Travelling
      -----------------------
What I love about these shades is the way that you can travel easily with them. I select just one to take on a weekend away and they are so light and easy to transport, and you have everything to create a look for the day and the evening. The four shadows are so easy to work with as you can apply the three colours for the daytime, and maybe leave the contour shade until after dark which tends to offer a more dramatic look for the evenings.

      Use A Primer
      --------------
I always use an eye shadow primer before I apply these- Mac Paint Pots are excellent for this, and when using the two neutral palettes the shades Painterly or Rubenesque work well but you can use any good primer. The shadows then do not crease at all and go on smoothly.

      Comparison With High End Brands
      ---------------------------------------
So how do these compare with my favourite more expensive shadows? I think I have to confess that yes I do prefer Mac eye shadows, as they have more pigment and are certainly right at the top of the tree where quality is concerned. They also have the edge over shadows like this in terms of being more vibrant and longer lasting. They also apply slightly more easily and they blend out with slightly less effort. However, for me they are a treat and I don't purchase them too often as the professional shades retail for around £9.50 per colour, which means you really have to be sure the shade is what you are looking for as to purchase a palette of four you are looking at £38. This is true for many premium brands. I also have to point out that members of my family are unable to tell the difference when I create a look with the NYC palette one day and the Mac palette the next. I guess that tells me something!

Superdrug offer an alternative to always having to buy high end cosmetics to see the results you want, and they are delivering all the time with so many new brands being highlighted in their stores. For example only a few weeks ago I bought the fantastic MUA professional neutral palette in Heaven and Earth for only £4.This supplies 12 neutral shades which are absolutely outstanding. They don't have markings on the shades with instructions as the NYC ones do but these are amazing and they have many shades to choose from.

      Final Thoughts
      ------------------
In conclusion I would say these palettes are an affordable way to try out new shades and new combinations of colours that have been chosen by experts to compliment each other. In essence they take the work out of choosing, and they travel beautifully offering a simple solution to eye make up for a weekend away. The best thing about them is the price- £2.99 for 4 shades and moreover shades that really look pretty and last all day. Superdrug often have offers and last week these were three for two! Highly recommended!
