NYC Smooch Proof 16Hr Lip Stain
Advantages: Nice range of colours
Disadvantages: Did not last beyond a few hours for me, dried out my lips, uneven application.
I have tried many lipstains, but I found that they tend to disappoint me. They either don't last long enough, dry out my lips or I can't get them off! I haven't given up finding a good one, so when I saw that New York Colour [NYC] produce a 16 hour "Smooch Proof" lipstain for just £2.49 for 3ml, I decided to give it a try.
NYC produce a wide range of low priced cosmetics. I have found them to be a bit hit-and-miss but I have had enough successes to encourage me to try any new products that they bring out. The lipstain is available in 10 colours, although only 6 were available for me to choose from in Superdrug. There is a good range of pinks and reds, perfect for more natural looks as well as for giving a hit of colour. I opted for "Berry long time", which is a raspberry shade. It looks much lighter on the NYC website, so be warned!
To me a lipstain differs from a normal lipstick in being especially long lasting. NYC say that their product is transfer proof and will last up to 16 hours. I liked the idea of having to apply a lip colour only once a working day.
The stain is packaged in a tube with a applicator that looks like a fibre tip pen. I think it smells like a blackboard marker pen too! Not the most appealing of scents, but it is only really noticeable when you are applying the stain. I wasn't aware of it after that. I found the idea of using a "pen" to colour in my lips a bit odd at first, even though I have used similar "brushes" before. The tip is quite fat so it doesn't take much work to fiill in your lips. It is thin enough though to allow for accuracy, which is more important with a lipstain because any mistakes are technically harder to rectify.
Going on, the stain feels more like a thick lipgloss than a traditional lipstick. Not unpleasant, just different. The first sweep of my lower lip gave a nice level of colour. It is more of a matte than gloss finish. Application on the top lip was harder though, as I don't think the lipstain flows well if you hold the tube upright. Using it with the tip pointing down clashes with your nose and feels awkward to say the least. The relative difficulty of getting a good layer of coverage on my top lip only increased as I continued to use the product. When it was more than half empty, I had to shake the tube several times to get any out at all, which is frustrating. One layer gives an obvious colour to the lips, or at least the bottom one, but you can built the intensity up if you add several. I found two coats suited me, but this is partially because the first coat isn't always very even.
The first time I used this, I went for a coffee and cake about an hour afterwards. I looked in the mirror afterwards and was amazed to see scarely any trace of my amazing "up to 16 hour" lipstain. What was left was patchy blobs of colour, which look worse to me than no lipstick at all. I knew that I had had something to eat and drink, but the product is said to be "smoochproof". I re-appiled it and went to work. Four hours later, I had to re-apply again, and this time I had drunk only a few sips of water. The results have been sadly the same since that time. I have never got the colour to last anywhere near 16 hours. I have finished the tube because I don't want my money to go to waste, but I have never enjoyed using it. The second reason I don't like it is due to the fact it makes my lips feel very dry, in a way that regular glosses and lipsticks don't. I tried using a balm over top, which helps a bit, but at the end of the day my lips did not feel nice.
One thing in it's favour is that the applicator tip stayed in good condition until I had finished the tube. When I used a similar product before, the "felt tip" became frayed and therefore impossible to use. I was apprehensive that this one would be the same but it was fine.
WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT?
I really like the colour, but based on the fact that it lasts less time for me than a lip products that don't claim to be long lasting, I can't recommend it. I would certainly not recommend this to someone whose lips tend to dryness, as mine don't and I still suffered problems with this. The frequency of application, and the fact I had to add lip balm, means that the low price is not as good value for me as it first appears. This is especially true as the lipstain is hard to apply as it nears it's end. Even when new, I found application patchy on the top lip. These things all add up to a product that I am not at all impressed with. I am going to give it one star for the nice colour and applicator, but that's it.
Summary: A good idea, but the staying power lets the product down.
