Advantages: Lasts for quite long (though not quite 16hrs), easy to apply, cheap
Disadvantages: Doesn't live up to its 16hr promise, tip can be damaged easily
I haven't exactly had the best of experiences with the make up company New York Colour. I first noticed them in the aisles and aisles of make up because of their cheaply priced cosmetics which I thought I would give a go... unfortunately, the products that I tried turned out to be bad quality, flaky, smudgy products, not at all worth their price, and I decided, Never Again.
However, I was unable to keep to my 'Never Again', when I was just passing their section in Superdrug, and saw their Smooch Proof 16hr Lip Stain. The product did not look any more spectacular than any of the other lip stains I had come across, however, I had wanted to invest in a lip stain for ages and I was quite intrigued about whether or not New York Colour would live up to their promise and make their lip stain last for 16 hours even though previous products had disappointed me. The thing that finally pushed me into buying one, though, was the price: only £3.99. This is quite cheap for a lip stain if you consider that many other lip stains from other companies will charge you well over the £5 mark. For that reason, I thought that £3.99 was a fair price to pay and hoped that New York Colour would be as good as to live up to their claims.
The lip stain looks sort of like a felt tip pen with a sharper 'paint brush' tip. This makes it quite easy to apply onto my lips (apart from the top lip, which I find hard to do with the pointed tip), and does not feel uncomfortable at all (though it does feel a bit weird, as if I am colouring in my lips with a felt tip marker!). The sharp point also makes it easier to line your lips. The pen exterior colour depends on the shade you choose, and it is embellished with silver lettering. It does not look too classy, but at least it does not look too tacky- kind of cute looking inside my make up bag, but nothing really to boast about.
However, I found that the tip of the lip stain could rather quickly be squashed a little to lose its sharp tip, though the effects have remained much the same. Also, this tip seems to have faded a little bit and it has lost some of its colour, something I find a little disconcerting.
The lip colour looks quite good, though I think I prefer the more slick effect that lip stick achieves. I bought this lip stain in the shade of Persistent Pink, which is quite a natural pinkish colour and though it does not create the biggest impact, it does make my lips look nicer. This does colour my lips quite well, it looks natural if you add a very light layer, though if you want to create a bigger impact with a deeper shade, then you can add several layers over your initial shade of lip stain. It does not dry uncomfortably, which is a bonus.
Does this lip stain last for 16 hours? Well, no, definitely not 16 hours. However, I would say that it is quite long lasting and stays on my lips for several hours, and then it starts to fade. Having said that, this lip stain is not that long lasting when I am continually drinking things and can leave a little ring of colour on my glass. At least, once it is dry, it does not smudge easily.
All in all, a product with plenty of pros and cons, but I have to say that it was better than I expected it to be. It does not last for 16 hours, but I suppose I should have never expected it to last for quite that long anyway, despite New York Colour's claims. I would give this 3 out of 5 dooyoo stars.
Summary: OK lipstain, better than expected
