I suffer terribly with my hands at times. Not only does my skin get all dry and chapped, but my nails are quite weak and peel, which means they can be left looking really horrible and embarrassing. They peel particularly around the sides of my nail which can be irritating and sore if I pick at it, which I tend to do from time to time. So I needed to fix the problem and find a solution.
A friend of mine who is a nail technician and forever nagging me about taking better and more care of my nails sent me a bottle of OPI Sensitive & Peeling Nail Envy to try and solve my problem. I don't bite my fingers nails anymore, I grew out of that in my teens and I do have naturally white tips when my nails do grow, my problem is that dealing with a lot of ink, paper and printing machines, my nails are the last thing I am thinking of.
OPI is a brand that I have heard of, though I have to admit I am no nail varnish expert and don't tend to apply any to my finger nails, in fact I only ever paint my toenails and that tends to be with whatever I've got in my make-up box or with whatever someone has bought for me. I am not loyal to any particular brand nor do I rush out and have to try the latest of everything nail varnish related. If I do purchase anything it tends to be clear varnish for my fingernails and something dark and moody (like me) for my toenails.
This particular product is a 15ml bottle which retails somewhere around £18-£20 far too much if I was going to buy it for myself, so I will just rely on Louise to send it to me when she has had enough of nagging. The bottle itself is as you would expect made of glass and is quite cylindrical in shape, with a black lid and an almost clear see-through bottle within which you can see the varnish and the white applicating brush. Printed on the bottle you will find the name of the product and the branch in orange lettering and a brief insight as to what it will do. This product states that it will prevent peeling, cracking and splitting for longer, stronger, harder natural nails - all of my problems solved in one little bottle - hopefully!
When it comes to applying it to your nails you must ensure that you have removed all traces of any other product first and even if you haven't painted your nails for a while, I am told it is a good idea to use a nail varnish removed to remove unwanted dirt and grime and then wash and pat dry your hands. Then with this product I was told to apply two coats to each fingernail, obviously allowing the first one to dry and then re-apply it and once that had been completed. Then every other day apply another coat to each nail for a few weeks to see if there is any improvement with my nails and if I wasn't impressed to continue the same process for a further two weeks.
I was quite surprised at how easy this product was to apply. With some nail varnishes and treatments, I have often found that they are either really runny which means you need to have a towel on your lap or table when applying or they are too thick and it feels like you are sat there for hours ensuring you are not applying too much for your varnish to then crack, chip or bubble and burst. This wasn't too thick and it wasn't too thin and simply glided onto my nails and stayed in place and the application brush is also really easy to hold and grip, which is quite important when doing something like this, but I found that the brush was really flexible too. Once applied to the nails, it leaves a lovely shine and doesn't take long to dry, 2-3 minutes at most, which is a great opportunity to sit back and relax.
The ingredients that are within this product are of no surprise. Starting with Aloe Vera which is one of my favourite ingredients because it is so good and soothing to the skin and does exactly the same job for your nails. Vitamin E comes next and it helps to strengthen and condition your nails to keep them from splitting and peeling. Finally there is Kukui nut oil provides moisture to dry skin and nails which helps prevent them from splitting and peeling and it is also packed full of Vitamins such as A, C and E which again are good for your skin and nails too. This product also state that it is is a Formaldehyde-free formula. I was also surprised at the lack of nail varnish smell too, it is there but not as pungent as with other brands.
So does it work? Well the one thing I was a bit unsure about having applied a fresh coat every other day was whether or not that fresh coat would be as affective as the first one I applied. I had nothing to worry about apparently because it works just as well and the proof is with how much better my nails currently look. They are by no means perfect and I have a little way to go to be totally happy, but I can already see after 4 weeks of use that my nails are not as brittle as they were, Infact there is a definite improvement in their hardness and less peeling around the sides of my nail.
I am not debating whether or not to invest in a bottle of this for myself because I am happy with the results so far and would find it a bit of a wasted effort if I didn't continue with it for a few weeks. That said, whilst the bottle itself isn't empty, there is still a week or so's worth left, I don't want to run out. For me it has been a worthy trial and one that I am keen to continue with for the time being and if my nails are even more improved at the end of the bottle then for me the price tag is definitely worth it, though shop around online because you can find it on offer for around £12.99
