Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter
Advantages: Moisturising, sublte but notable colour and plumped lips - brilliant!
Disadvantages: Absolutely none if you forgive the base being narrow so reducing grip when taking off the lid
Except I hate shopping. I really do. And when you've piled on some pounds (particularly when its attributable to the contraceptive pill rather than a change in your eating habits, which makes losing it a soul-destroying battle), buying clothes is one of the most demoralising, upsetting things you can do.
All the same, I decided to give it a try in the interests of trying to cheer myself up a while back. All I managed was to realise that I no longer contain the "girl gene", I hate modern fashion and I love cosmetics - there were sales on them everywhere in January so rather than make myself borderline suicidal over the spatial differences between my backside and a pair of size 10 River Island jeans, I treated myself to some new beauty products whilst they were going cheap. Well, cheaper.
***REVLON COLORBURST LIP BUTTERS***
One of my purchases was this lovely lip product, which I picked up under the influences of a whim and a glass of red wine whilst reconvening with Mr Rarr (sole purchase: one pair of socks) at Café Rouge. On offer for the princely sum of five English pounds, this normally retails at £7.99.
My personal choice was Berry Smoothie, a rich pink that isn't too girlie and light but isn't a bold, in your face colour.
Revlon Lip Butters are available in 20 shades and contain mango, shea butter and coconut butter, which claims to be able to boost lip moisture by 156%. The base formula is apparently a gel with a buttery shine and sheer to medium colour.
The butters come packaged as you would expect a lipstick - a twist up tube within a lidded case. In this instance the packaging is quite cute - a textured case with a representation of the colour of each shade which is semi-opaque clips on to a black base with Revlon branding. You can just see the silver butter casing and twist mechanism through this. One thing I would say is that the base is much narrower than with most lipsticks, which sometimes makes it hard to pop the lid off as you have little to grasp on to.
***WHAT'S IT LIKE?***
I really like this product. When Max Factor launched a similar product - a sheer-to-medium type coverage with a nourishing, caring formula for those among us who don't want the obvious finish of true lipstick or maybe would like the benefit of a balm but with some colour - I loved it and still use it. But that has a limited shade range and I was hell-bent on treating myself so I'm really pleased I tried this on a whim - I usually don't use Revlon products so this might have passed me by otherwise.
To apply, this is smooth. It glides on and doesn't feel remotely greasy. It feels like a high-quality balm but it leaves a healthy amount of colour. It doesn't quite look like a lipstick and it doesn't look overly shiny, but feels soothing and nourishing on the lips and offers a notable but quite natural colour. If you are not bold enough for a full on lipstick finish this could be your answer.
I've been having massive problems with chapped lips this winter - it would seem that I have a natural reaction to stress of chewing my lips also - so I have been using a lot of moisturising lip products but having also recently changed my hair colour I am enjoying experimenting with new make up looks as well. This ticks both boxes - the colour is notable enough to be flattering and balance colours between hair, eyes and skin etc but also it is helping my chapped lips. It doesn't have the lasting staying power that a lipstick might boast, but the stick itself is lasting well and I don't mind reapplying when I get both colour and care against the winter elements.
Now, the interesting thing I have come to realise in recent days is that when I use this consistently, even though it doesn't claim that it will, my lips don't just feel better but look notably fuller. I'm having a bit of a low at the moment and have been beating myself up about my appearance quite a bit but the interesting thing is that this lip butter has made my lips look fuller than plumping products ever have. They look smooth and feel great and this can sooth even serious cracks - not cure completely, but reduce the chapped skin that come with them and make me more inclined to forget they are there. And dare I say it, but suddenly realising how beneficial this is not only as a beauty product but also to make lips feel full and beautiful - I'm actually starting to feel attractive and even edging towards sexy again. I may not be rivaling Angelina Jolie but I feel pretty damn good about my pout when I'm wearing this and the subtlety of the colour coverage means you can just finish a look without pushing it over the top. I love the plumping effect this has and will definitely be buying again when my current buy finally runs out.
Due to the light feeling of the formula, I would suggest that this has the moisturising qualities that you need in winter but could also be slicked on briefly in summer and not feel sticky or cloying. It's a lovely product with no nasty taste when you bite your lips and I can't believe how understated Revlon have been about the marketing - this is a fantastic product and for me it outperforms my beloved Max Factor equivalent. Look gorgeous and care for your skin at the same time - perfect. On top of that the packaging is beyond cute - I love the diamond pattern to the tube and although the lid can be a bit sticky to take off due to the narrow base, it looks great and I love the semi-opaque representation of your shade. It's distinctive and stands out without being brash - a bit like the product inside it. Perfect, Revlon, just keep on doing it!
Summary: So pleased with this - cheap at £8 because this offers both care and beautiful, flattering colour.
