Here I will be reviewing Rimmel's 100% Waterproof Mascara in Black Black. It is also available in Brown Black and can currently be bought for £5.29 from Superdrug, or for £5.10 from the Argos website, to name just a few options.
---Why This Mascara?---
Picture it: I'm sitting in my car getting ready for a job interview, so before I climb out I check myself in my mirrors, quickly wipe under my eyes to make sure there are no cheeky smears of mascara, and know I look picture perfect. Forty-five minutes later, feeling confident about how the interview went, I return to my car and I my mirrors see great black smears under my eyes. How did that happen, when I barely even moved for that whole time, let alone rubbed my eyes?! How embarrassing...
This is what happened to me mid-way through last year, and I was so embarrassed that I vowed it would never happen to me again. However, finding a waterproof, smudge-proof mascara which didn't turn to glue when you tried to remove it proved harder than I imagined. Being black and smudge-proof were my only real criteria, so I decided to leave the hassle to someone else and put it on my Christmas list. Come Christmas Day, I found Rimmel's 100% Waterproof Mascara neatly tucked away in my stocking. :)
---What's It Like To Use?---
When you unscrew the lid and pull the brush out you'll see that the brush is straight - some people may prefer a curved brush, which is supposed to make it easier to coat every lash in every corner, but I personally prefer a straight brush as I find they're more accurate.
The bristles are all the same length and are all well covered in mascara, although they don't appear to be clogged or clumpy at all.
This really translates to how it feels when applied, as my lashes all appear nicely separated and I've not noticed any clumps on my eyelashes at all so far.
Luckily, I'm naturally blessed with very long eyelashes, but once I have applied this mascara even my eyelashes look noticeably longer and thicker. With one coat, my lashes don't feel stiff at all - in fact, the mascara feels so light and natural that I can't feel it at all. Sometimes I like to apply a second coat for a night out, but even then my lashes don't feel too stiff and sticky.
---How Smudgeproof And Waterproof Is It?---
I always find that the activity which makes my mascara smudge the most is - bizarrely - when I'm sitting doing nothing on a lazy day at home. With regret, I have to admit that this mascara is no different, and after a day of bumming around the house, I always end up with little black smudges under my eyes. Of course, this is the situation in which my appearance matters the least, but from an apparently 100% waterproof mascara, I would hope for slightly better.
On the other hand, when I do venture out I can spend most of the day out and by the end I'll barely notice any smudging at all. This is a huge improvement on my previous mascaras (especially the one I wore to THAT interview!), and I think that I will always experience a certain amount of smudging with any mascara I use. I put this down to the medical problems which I have, which mean I find it difficult to regulate my body temperature and am prone to sweating - I'm sure that the majority of you won't have this problem at all.
As for its true waterproof qualities I can't really comment as I haven't been swimming whilst wearing this mascara. I have, however, both been out in the rain and cried whilst wearing it, and neither time have I had black rivers running down my cheeks.
---What's It Like To Remove?---
As I mentioned at the beginning, waterproof mascaras are notoriously difficult to remove - they tend to stick to your eyelashes like tar or glue, just at the very time you wish it wouldn't. What with this mascara claiming to be 100% waterproof, I was expecting to sit for hours trying to remove it properly.
When it comes to removing it, I am very pleasantly surprised. I have previously reviewed the Johnson's face wipes which I use daily, and I usually use these same wipes to remove my make-up. These ordinary face wipes get to grips with Rimmel's 100% Waterproof Mascara easily, and can remove all the day's mascara within minutes. No scrubbing needed! What's even better is that when I wake up in the morning I never have any smears and smudges which come from mascara which I thought I had removed the night before.
Ultimately, this is probably the easiest mascara to remove which I have ever worn.
---Overall: Thumbs Up Or Thumbs Down?---
Overall, it's a thumbs up. The mascara is cheap yet gives great coverage and leaves your lashes comfortable, separated, looking long and luscious, and clump-free. I'm not sure that it's quite lived up to its 100% waterproof claims, as I still occasionally get those dreaded smudges - hence the one knocked-off star. However, it does smudge less than other mascaras I have tried and at least lasts long enough to get me through an interview! Plus, being so incredibly simple to remove, this mascara is great value for money and has my wholehearted recommendation!
Summary: Overall a good, recommended mascara - after all, finding a mascara that 'does it all' is impossible!
