Advantages: Well pigmented, buildable, fun design, easy to apply, staying power, cheap
Disadvantages: The lip balm is rubbish
I've got quite a few felt tip-like lip stains and I love them - they're so much more fun to apply than lipstick and lipgloss!
This particular lip stain is one of my most recent purchases and I bought it from Boots a few weeks ago. I bought it mainly because I loved the packaging and it has got a little lip balm on the end of it as well which I thought was a good idea. It's available from various other places including various supermarkets, drugstores and online retailers including ASOS and Amazon. Prices do vary but the average price is around £5.00 to £6.00 and I paid £5.99 for mine which is great value in my opinion considering that this is a 2-in-1 product.
The lip stain is available in four colours ranging from nude to purpley pink. I found it hard to choose as the two lighter shades looked almost identical when I swatched them but in the end I bought it in 'perpetual plum' which is a gorgeous cross between rose pink and red. I quite liked the nude shade but as I'm naturally pale I thought that it might make me look washed out.
The lip stain's packaging is adorable and really girly. It looks just like a felt tip and it's bright pink with black writing on the side of it which simply says the brand and product name. On one end there's the lip balm which is covered with a white lid and on the other end there's the applicator brush which looks identical to a felt tip nib. It is slightly pointed and incredibly easy to apply - it's much more precise than a normal lip stick or lip gloss and I always find it quite fun colouring my lips in - I'm a big kid at heart lol.
As it is so precise I don't need to use a lipliner and although the sensation it gives when I'm pressing it down and colouring my lips in was a bit odd at first it isn't unpleasant and the nib doesn't drag as long as I have used my lip scrub prior to applying it. It is really important to exfoliate your lips before applying it as it will make any dry bits or cracks stand out and look hideous!
As long as I've exfoliated before applying it though the finish is smooth - not at all patchy. I find that I need around three layers of this to get the intensity that I want and it's easily buildable meaning it can be worn in different ways, eg one coat if I want a more natural look or several coats if I want the difference to be noticeable. The pigmentation is impressive and it gives a nice matte finish. It lasts for a good four hours(ish) which I think is a reasonable amount of time and it is quick and easy to re-apply. It is non-transferrable and doesn't go patchy after a while, it just fades over time.
Although I do like the lip stain, I'm not keen on the lip balm. The texture is too hard and waxy and it drags along my lips. It is not very moisturising and I prefer to just leave the lip stain how it is or if I do want a more glossy look then a bit of Vaseline does the job. Overall I recommend this lip stain and I give it four out of five stars. I have knocked one star off because of the lip balm being pretty rubbish.
Summary: 4/5
