Advantages: Lasts all day when used with primer, doesn't crease, fade or smudge, Easy to apply and remove
Disadvantages: Doesn't last 8 hrs without primer
I have an absolute love hate relationship when it comes to anything resembling a cream/mousse eye shadow. I adore the fact it is quick and easy to apply with little time and effort, yet it looks like you've spent awhile on your eye makeup, but I detest the fact cream eye shadows crease on me whether I use a primer underneath or not. I love MAC Paints but I hate their prices for such a small amount of product so I was on the hunt for something new, something that would last, something that is great value, but did I find it?
**About the product**
I came across Rimmel Colour Mousse 8Hr Eye Shadow while browsing an online makeup store one night and I loved their colour choice and the price was fantastic at £1.49 each for 7mls.
Rimmel say this Colour Mousse Eye Shadow will stay put for 8 hours of wear with no fading or creasing and glides on smoothly and effortless.
Unfortunately for me I am not a huge Rimmel fan but due to the price I thought I would give it ago and bought four shades all in the neutral everyday wearable shades.
On receiving my eye shadows I am glad to find they came in little 7ml squeezable plastic tubes, however looking at the back of the packaging I am greeted with "TESTER Not For Resale ". At first I thought, how dare they sell something that is not for resale, and then I thought, good as it's easier to carry around and I get more product as the original Mousse Eye Shadow's that come in little glass pots you only receive 5ml of product.
**How many shades are there?**
Whether if you choose the little glass pots or the plastic tubes you are looking at eight shades that range from very vibrant Mermaid (aqua) to the softer Snow Queen (white) to the natural browns. I chose shades 5, 6, 7 and 8, which are all neutrals colours ranging from gold, light pink, peach and a beautiful brown that looks a gun metal brown.
**Swatching the colours**
Like many powder eye shadows I find the colour in the pan is vibrant and pigmented, however when you swatch the colour on the back of your hand disappointment soon kicks in as you realise there is no pigment or vibrancy to the shadows what so ever.
Squeezing the eye shadow from the tiny nozzle and swatching colours to the back of my hand the texture hits you straight away. Rimmel say this eye shadow is a mousse, yet it looks, feels and behaves like a cream. The product feels cool and refreshing on my hand, and the pigment? Well it's the same as what's in the tin...I mean tube. There is no loss of pigment and looks so vibrant. There is a metallic sheen to all the of the mousse eye shadows with no glitter partials.
**Applying the product**
Applying this mousse eye shadow could not be simpler. Simply take either your ring finger and apply or an eye shadow brush, which ever you prefer.
I first applied this product to my eye lids without a primer as with MAC Paints I noticed very quickly a primer is not needed even on oily eye lids and it lasts all day so I wanted to see if Rimmel was the same.
Even though the product felt cool and refreshing on the back of my hand, this sensation is very welcomed on my eyes but the feeling doesn't last long.
I first applied the product with my ring finger with lovely results; the product glides onto the skin without pulling and tugging and looks smooth. You can build as much colour as you wish or leave a slight sweep for a wash of colour. While applying the colour to my other eye I did not realise the product dries super fast and is impossible to blend afterwards. Going back to my other eye with a blending brush and sweeping the harsh eye shadow line away was no good; the product was suck and was not budging. Although it did not look too bad it was not what I would call a perfect eye shadow application, I would also recommend if you want to build the colour up to build it up quickly as the product dries in lightning speed and may cake.
Through the day the shadow lasted around three hours, without creasing or fading, which I thought was good for a cream/mousse eye shadow but I was disappointed with Rimmel claiming 8hours of wear as this was not so.
The following day I tried the eye shadows with Too Faced Shadow Insurance to see if this made a difference with the longevity that I hoped for. Applying it was a brush this time the product glides on just as well to an opaque finish, taking a blending brush soon as before drying kicks in, the product is easy to blend like a powder eye shadow and gives a beautiful sheen to the eyes without looking like a harsh cream/mousse eye shadow.
I am very pleased to say the shadow lasts longer than the 8 hours stated with absolutely no creasing, fading or smudging. At the end of a long day it was also easy to remove with eye makeup remover; there was no need for pulling at the delicate eye area. Instead the eye shadow melts off easy for you to sweep with a cotton pad.
It is also worth noting the eye shadows are not waterproof and if you rub your eyes some product will transfer off.
**Price and availability**
I bought my products from www.saveonmakeup.com where you will find the plastic tubes for 7ml of product at a very good price of £1.49. If you would like the glass pots these can be purchased from www.boots.com for £4.99 for 5ml of product.
**What I think about it / do I like it?**
I am absolutely pleased with my purchase and I am sure I will be purchasing some more in the future. I love the way it stays on the eye lids with no fuss and most importantly there is no need for re-touching.
**Would I purchase again?**
I would have no shadow of doubt I will be purchasing these little beauties again, well done Rimmel.
Summary: A great cream/mousse eye shadow for quick and ease of application, perfect for the mornings
