Advantages: nice colours

Disadvantages: not lasting long enough

Rimmel is one of my favorite brands for make-up and I´m usually very pleased with all the products I purchase. Unfortunately the Mono eye shadow is not one of them. The eye shadow comes in only one shade in a small pack that is sold for around 4 pounds at Boots, Superdrugs and some smaller shops. I tried them at Boots and was instantly in love with the shiny yet natural looking colours which I bought right away. 4 pounds for a single shade seems quite much but at least you are not stuck with colours you dislike and will never use.

The first thing I noticed was the packing - which I usually would not review but I´m going to make an exception here. The lid is not attached to the actual base at all so you just pull it off and stick it on top again after use. The problem here is that the lid is quite flimsy and doesn´t really close after a while anymore - obviously not ideal if you want to carry your eye shadow around in your make-up bag. The other negative point is that no applicator brush is included. Especially when buying a light colour I would prefer having a brand new applicator as my other ones are smudged with the darker shades I have. For 4 pounds a pack I would certainly expect a new brush and not having to buy an extra one.

Anyway, now to the actual eye shadow. I bought 2 different shades, Bronzed and Glitzed - both light, natural looking shades with a light sparkle. I absolutely loved the Bronzed one and it looked great on my eye lid. Applying the powder was very simple and straightforward and the colour stayed on very nicely. However, I felt that the powder was quite loose and I had to clean my cheeks after applying the eye shadow. So this made me doubtful whether it would last a whole day or not but thankfully I was positively surprised - the eye shadow looked good even after a whole day at university. As you would probably expect it did not last a whole party night but that seems to be normal with any powder eye shadow. If you found one that is so long lasting please let me know!

The reason for the low rating I gave this product was due to the Glitzed shade that I bought as well, just read on to find out why. As I said before I was very pleased with the Bronzed eye shadow and was very much looking forward to try the Glitzed one. It looked great in the tub, all glittery and sparkly and absolutely perfect for a great night out. And honestly, it did! It really lived up to its promise and made my eye lids all "glitzed" - for the first couple of times I used it. The glitter was unfortunately only at the top of the powder and after using this top bit all there was left was a grey-ish, bland and boring looking eye shadow nowhere near worthy of its 4 pounds price tag. I was very disappointed and will certainly not continue buying this product again.

This is unfortunately the first Rimmel product that I cannot wholeheartedly recommend. I tried two different shades and only one of them was any good; namely the Bronzed (60) shade which is a very pretty, shiny and naturally looking colour that is perfect for any occasion. The Glitzed (80) was a big disappointment as the glitter did only last for the first couple of times I used it and was basically useless after this; I mean who wants to have a matte grey eye shadow that does not look appealing at all.

For 4 pounds for a small tub of eye shadow I would expect some more quality especially from such a well-known brand as Rimmel. I was also rather disappointed that no applicator brush was included in the pack. I mean honestly, they don´t cost much and it would have been a nice touch but alas it seems as this is asking for too much.

As I said, I cannot really recommend this product as one out of two was a total waste of money and a big disappointment. Still I will award it 05 out of 10 possible points as I really liked the Bronzed shade and will probably buy it again.
