Advantages: Doesn't budge, versatile, looks good
Disadvantages: Need a good remover to get it off
Although my make up bag houses a selection of both I'd always favoured liquid eyeliner over pencil as it seemed to be more accurate and last longer, however it's not too easy to find a good waterproof eyeliner. Mascaras yes, but eyeliners I've found are a little less common, or when I was looking around for one, out of stock .
Good old Rimmel do one however, though it's not liquid or pencil, sort of somewhere in between. The eyeliner is called 'Exaggerate' and does not actually call itself and eyeliner, but an eye definer.
The product comes in a tube with a cap on each end, under on cap is the eyeliner which comes out when you twist the barrel, a bit like a long skinny lipstick. You apply it much like a pencil, and it goes on pretty well, if a little smudgy sometimes.
This is where the other end of the product comes in. If you flip the tube over, and take the cap off the other end, there is an angled rubber for blending, or indeed taking away any messy edges. It works ok, but I still use a corner of a face wipe if I need to clean up any messy edges as I think this works a little better.
The gadgets don't end there though, if you take the rubber of the end and turn it upside down you'll find there is a little sharpener to sharpen the eyeliner, as it does lose the point on it after a few applications, which is when it tends to go a bit smudgy. I've found this take a little bit of practice, I was a bit heavy handed with it the first time, trying to sharpen it and lost a chunk of eyeliner. The product is quite soft so you need to be gentle with and and clean the sharpener with a tissue after every use so the blade is clean. Once you get the hang of it though, it sharpens into a perfect point making it as accurate as liquid.
That's why I really like this stuff it's so versatile, if you let it blunt you can use it for a smudgy effect, or by blending it in on the lid for a subtle waterproof eyeshadow, or indeed just as a base for a sheer shade of eyeshadow. Or of course give it a good old sharpen for a fine line.
So it's easy to use, and looks good but does it last? Well yes, really well. Better I've found than pencil which smudges off and fades and liquid which sometimes chips and cracks. This stuff clings on and looks great by the end of the day. I originally bought this in the bright turquoise 'Aqua Sparkle' colour and wore it to a day out at Thorpe Park (where you can afford it be a bit more crazy with your make up!) After a day on the water rides I can honestly say it didn't budge much at all. After that I bought the black 'Noir' as well and use that every day, after all you never know when you're going to get caught the rain, or need a good cry.
Of course with a good waterproof eye make up, you can't remove it with water alone and I've found even some of the eye make up removers that claim to be able to shift water proof products can't shift this stuff completely. The best make up remover I've found to use with this is the Johnson's 3 in 1, which removes it all pretty well.
These eyeliners are available widely, where Rimmel is stocked but I bought mine in Tesco for £3.71, a bargain price I think for such a good little product.
Summary: Top eyeliner, sorry, definer.
