INTRODUCTION.

I remember my first introduction to make-up. I was fifteen in the mid 90's; my Dad had got me to babysit his girlfriends (now wife's) five year old daughter. Before i knew what i was doing I found myself roaming around her house in true "come dine with me" fashion, investigating (very nosey I know). Before long I came across her very intriguing dressing table. On top of the dressing table sat all kinds of womanly treats, from perfumes to powder puffs. I couldn't help myself; I started applying the the perfume and make-up. Obviously I was sat on the couch looking all sweet and innocent by the time they had arrived back at home. As I left to meet my friends I felt confident my nosiness hadn't been rumbled but it almost certainly had. Arriving plain faced and leaving with bright red lips and Aunt Sally rosy red cheeks it was pretty obvious, still she didn't mind so no harm done.

In the following weeks I found myself gathering my own collection of make-up treats using my hard earned cash from my glass collecting job at a local pub. It has to be said cheap make-up has truly come a long way since the 90's, the foundation was always bright orange for the "you've been tangoed" look, with great big lines of it around the chin that made it look as though you were supporting a mask. As my collection grew I bought cheap lipsticks, perfumes and of course the all important eye liner.

The trouble with penciled eye liner is that the nib really has to be "just so" in order to get the right look, too sharp and it feels like your dissecting your eye lids, too blunt and you end up with a big thick grey line. Back then eyeliner had a variety of uses, the fashion was to apply concealer to your lips then paint the out line of the lips with the liner and rub it in, most strange. I must confess that I have used eye liner once or twice in my teenage years to cover up a spot, blobbing it on hoping that the spot would be mistaken for a Cindy Crawford mole, though I strongly suspect that coupled with the foundation I probably looked more like a bright orange Grot Bags.

I always found eye liner quite fiddly to apply, I find myself always acquiring an issue with symmetry every time I do so, as I have already explained the pencils do have a couple of down sides, the other thing it that as soon as you get an itchy eye wearing it, you end up looking like Alice Cooper smudging it all over your face, so I was keen to try Rimmels Exaggerate liquid eye liner to note the difference.

WHAT RIMMEL SAY ABOUT THEIR EXAGGERATE LIQUID EYE LINER

Exaggerate Eye Liner creates a bold, precision contour around the lash line. Long lasting, easy to use liquid liner for an intense result. The average rating for this product on the Rimmel website is four out of five stars and I think that is probably right.

PACKAGING, PRICING AND PURCHASING

I chose Rimmels 001 black liquid eye liner but you can also purchase the 002 absolute brown. The eye liner comes in a 2.5ml pot with a long pointy lid harboring the pencil shaped nib inside used to paint the eyes with. The nib is nice and thin which really does make it so much easier to use. Although the amount of eye liner you get seems really limited, it does take ages to use up, I've had mine months now and it's still going strong with no sign of coming to an end yet.

This product will cost just under the £5 mark but of course prices will vary a little according to where you shop. Value for money is great here considering how much you would be expected to pay for a similar product from a more expensive brand. My guess is that there would be very little difference in performace from a more expensive brand to.
Rimmel is available at Boots, Superdrug, Lloydspharmacy, Independent Chemists & selected grocery outlets throughout the UK and Ireland.

INGREDIENTS

Well try as I might I haven't found any on the pot or indeed on the rimmel website. I don't expect this is of any great importance, except to say it would be nice to know what this gloopy, mysterious black substance is made of.

PRODUCT AND OPINION

Like I have mentioned previously, I am a wee bit cack handed and a tad on the symmetry obsessive side when it comes to applying any eye liner. This eye liner does require a bit of a steady hand. However compared to other liquid eye liners I think Rimmel have done a really good job with their applicator, making the product far easier to use with its slim line pointed end.

It has to be said that the product really does dry very quickly which is great in the sense that no matter how much you end up itching your eye throughout the night, the product is likely to stay put, avoiding the Alice Cooper look. It isn't so good if you end up bodging a bit because you are likely to get a red patch on your eye trying to remove it, as it really does stick like cement. I would suggest that is probably a good idea to have some dampened cotton buds at the ready for a hasty removal job before the product dries, this usually does the trick for me.

I did read a suggestion on the Rimmel site from another girl that read "I'd never used liquid eye-liner before, but this one made it really easy. Try drawing your line in kohl first, then go over it with liquid." This is something I think is well worth trying as the kohl pencils are far easier to apply and of course easier to remove should you make a mistake. Why not just use a kohl pencil then I hear you cry? Well easy as they may be to apply and remove, as I have said before they do smudge easily and certainly don't create the kind of impact that Rimmels Exaggerate liquid eye liner does. For accuracy perhaps though the kohl pencil as an underlay really sounds a great idea and certainly something I intend to have a go at doing next time I use this product.

Once you get past the fiddliness of it all and start perfecting your application technique, then this product is absolutely superb, it really does give an incredible impact for those dressy nights out. It makes your eyes appear bigger, brighter, more defined and shapely. It doesn't run or smudge and it stays on for hours and hours. So sexy cat eyes here we come.

For those of you liquid eye liner novices still daunted by the application difficulties of a product like this, I did find a really helpful guide on youtube that should really help a lot with learning how to apply it more effectively:

Removing the product isn't really too problematic. Having a good eye make-up remove however, is a bit of a must have in this case and you may still end up with a tiny amount still on. But its worth it for those come to bed eyes, its just you may take a bit to bed at the end of the night.

CONCLUSION

Rimmels Exaggerate liquid eye liner is really no fiddlier than any other liquid eye liner of its kind. Its cost effective and far cheaper than a lot of its competitors. Its highly impactful and lasts all evening. All in all Rimmel's Exaggerate liquid eye liner is a fabulous addition to anyone's make-up bag.
