Advantages: Nice application and effect
Disadvantages: Not very cheap
I am not normally that much of a fan of eye shadow, mainly because it can give a tacky, unnatural effect, and if applied wrong, it could look absolutely disastrous. Nevertheless, when I needed to obtain some blue eye shadow for a fancy dress party, I rose to the occasion and looked around a little before buying the Glam Eyes Mono Eyeshadow by Rimmel from Superdrug for under £5- not cheap nor expensive in the world of eye shadows. So, was it worth it?
Well, I had of course bought Rimmel cosmetic products before, as it is quite a famous cosmetic brand name, and one of the most popular make up brands in the UK. It is also, I would say, in the middle range of the cosmetics available, so, even though there are several brands which are cheaper than it, you do not have to pay a fortune for your cosmetics. I had bought several items of make up from Rimmel over the years, and I had not been disappointed, and I hoped that this eye shadow would remain with much the same desired effect.
So, a bit about what I bought. It is called a 'mono eye shadow' not because it is in shades of grey scale, but because you only get one colour in your palette. This can be a nuisance, as you have to carry around separate palettes all around with you instead of having a big palette which can be easier to use when you are applying multiple colours. However, this can also be seen as an advantage because instead of having to carry around a big bulky palette, you can just easily select the colours you want and go.
I bought the '450 Celestial Sapphire' shade, because I was a little tired of searching for the perfect eye shadow, and so grabbed any shade that was vaguely blue looking to the counter. Besides, doesn't 'Celestial Sapphire' sound quite sophisticated and majestic to you? Despite this, the shade of this eye shadow was not deep and dark enough to look majestic, though it was not yet light enough to be considered as tacky. This, for me, was not a perfect shade, but it was good enough for me anyway. And anyway, there are many different colours and shades you can choose from, to match your taste. With cosmetic shops such as Boots and Superdrug doing many '3 for 2' cosmetic offers, you can save and mix and match at the same time!
This eye shadow is packaged in quite a formal, rectangular box, made out of light plastic. Though this plastic feels very light weight and easily broken, it can be easily carried around with you in your pocket or in your make up case without adding too much extra weight at all. There is a clear plastic lid (so you can easily see the colour and how much eye shadow you have left) which can easily be prised open and closed- this sufficiently stops the eye shadow from being contaminated. The top section is the eye shadow, beautifully textured (and it does seem to be quite a shame to ruin it!). At the bottom, there is an eye shadow brush to apply it with- this is easily used for a nice effect.
The eye shadow itself was easily to apply with the provided brush, and it blended quite nicely into my skin, leaving quite a nice effect without being too bold and tacky. The texture of the eye shadow is considerably smooth, and not at all crumbly. This also lasts for several hours without smudging all fading- I can wear it for a full evening with it looking as lovely as ever, so I think that, in terms of functionality, this works quite well.
Altogether, I think this is quite a good product, at a reasonable (though not cheap) price- and it met all of my expectations. It looks surprisingly nice and it is good quality, which is really all you would expect from a middle range eye shadow. I have found that I have been using this more and more, adding little subtle touches of blue to my make up at times. However, I am sure you can find better eye shadows for this price, and for that reason, I would give it 4 out of 5 dooyoo stars.
