Advantages: Reasonable price, adds length and definition

Disadvantages: None

I've already got a huge stash of mascaras, but when I saw this one on offer in my local Superdrug a few weeks ago I decided to buy it. I'd been wanting to try it for a while but couldn't justify paying the usual retail price of £9.00 when I already have so many mascaras!! I managed to get mine for £4.99, which I am really pleased with and having tried it and being so pleased with it, I would happily pay full price if I ever decide to re-purchase it. This mascara is widely available from places like Boots and Superdrug. There are two shades available - the usual suspects, black and brown.

I always like it when there's a colour option other than black as that way it is suitable for a wider range of people, eg people with red or blonde hair. I've got very dark brown hair and black lashes, so I always opt for black mascaras and given the choice, 'very black', which most brands of mascaras offer although this one doesn't. This is not an issue for me at all though and I'm very pleased with the colour; the formula is an intense, rich black with a subtle gloss to it. I find the subtle gloss a nice feature as it makes my lashes appear healthier and shinier and in even better conidtion then they are.

Rimmel actually claim that this mascara strengthens, nourishes and renews the lashes so this is more of a lash treatment than a normal mascara, which I didn't realise at the time of purchase. I don't have short, brittle or stubby lashes and they're already nice and long and thick, so had I realised that this is a mascara which encourages the lashes to grow, I'm not sure I'd of bought it. I am glad that I did though as it's a really good mascara and it is nice and light and gentle as well. It does not make my lashes look as full and long as say my maybelline falsies mascara and the finish is not as dramatic, however my lashes always appear noticeably longer and that bit more 'fluttery' in a subtle kind of way.

It also makes my lashes appear more defined, which is of course an advantage. My lashes are dark black, but somehow this manages to make them really stand out that bit more. The applicator brush that comes with the mascara is quite slim and long. It is really soft and it has long, widely spaced apart bristles which really grip all of the lashes and seperate them. The brush isn't too bulky and I am impressed with the quality and design. The tube that the mascara comes with is black with a lime green lid. It has silver writing on the side and it fits perfectly into my make-up bag. This mascara makes a good base as it protects my lashes so I usually do one coat of this and then apply several coats of a more dramatic mascara if I'm going out somewhere special, however 1-2 coats is perfect for a minimalistic day-to-day au naturale kind of look.

The formula is very light and it doesn't weigh my lashes down at all. I've also found that it is very gentle so it is ideal for people who wear contact lenses or, like me, have sensetive eyes. The mascara's lasting power is average and I'd say that on average it stays put for 8ish hours, which I feel is really good longevity. The mascara is not waterproof, although it doesn't run easily at all - I've had ocassions where I've sneezed and my eyes have become really moist and unlike some mascaras, this hasn't budged! No smudging at all. It is also nice and moisturising on the lashes and it doesn't go all dry and flaky.

So, now for Rimmel's claims, and my opinion..

Claim 1 - STRENGTHENS - Helps minimise lash loss.
My eyelashes are already in very good condition and they're nice and strong, although I do still ocassionaly get the odd eyelash fall out while using make-up wipes. Since using this, I can't say that I've noticed much of a difference but then again it is quite hard to tell how strong my lashes actually are. People with brittle eyelashes will probably be able to tell the difference, though.

Claim 2 - NOURISHES - Supports lashes to grow strong & long.
I've always had naturally long, full lashes, so if I'm honest I was not expecting this to make a noticeable difference. I've been using this for just under the 30 day recommended time period and believe it or not (I was pleasantly suprised!), I have noticed quite a substantial difference. The length of my natural lashes does appear slightly, but noticeably longer and my lashes look even healthier. Like a lot of people my lashes don't have any lift to them without mascara but since using this they do appear slightly more full and 'lifted'.

Claim 3 - RENEWS - Helps repair & restore lashes.
I can't say that I've noticed any 'repairing' going on, but like I said before, my lashes are in good condition. I don't doubt for a second that it doesn't do what it claims to though, so this mascara would be ideal for anyone with brittle lashes.

Another claim that Rimmel makes is that the mascara makes the lashes appear 80% longer, instantly. I think 80% is over-doing it by quite a bit and 40% is more accurate, but yes it does add instant length. Overall, I highly recommend this mascara. It adds definition, makes lashes appear longer and encourages lash growth, making a noticeable difference. Five out of five.

Summary: Highly recommended
