Advantages: Cheapish!
Disadvantages: Smudges badly on application is a devil to sharpen!
Eyeliner is something I own a lot of. I don't know about you ladies but I counted up all my black eyeliners last night and I actually own 6 of them! lol The reason for this is because they're so easy to mislay and when your off out on a night out and you can't find one it's like the end of the world! Well it is to me! So I have loads lol
I have numerous others too in different colours and some in a liquid form. I love the look of a liquid eyeliner but even though I'm a Beauty Therapist by trade I haven't yet perfected the art of application (I'm ashamed to add!) All my friends have that wonderful 'bat-winged styled Amy Winehouse creation' going on but not me. I can spend hours on this and still look like a panda! So for me, the pencil is the road I travel, unless I'm applying it drunk before going out when anything goes lol
Anyhow...The Packaging....
The Rimmel eyeliner I'm reviewing is the jet black (061) soft kohl pencil. Basically its a pencil lol (odd that) it has white writing on it indeed letting me know who it is by and what it is. It also tells me it's recyclable (must mean the plastic slide on lid) and that it weighs 1.2g.
Application and Results....
Basically the idea of the product (if you've just been beamed on to planet earth) is to frame the eyes, working the pencil as a pencil along the eyelid. I have several ways of making this product work for me....
One is to apply straight after my foundation and pressed powder and then apply my eye shadow over the top for a softer look.
The other is to do that and then reapply after the eye shadow for a more defined look.
My personal favourite way of application at the moment however is to use the pencil, apply eye shadow over the top and then using the line I've created already, re go over it with a liquid eyeliner straight over the top and the one I love to use at the moment considering it's the party season is a glitter liquid eyeliner! It looks great!
Application itself is tricky with this pencil so I always keep on hand a cotton wool bud dipped in a little toner (a tip from beauty college) to correct any small mistakes I make. I find when the pencil has just been sharpened that the nib breaks realy easily and stuff. If it's too blunt the lines you create can be too thick and heavy and not very defined particularly at the corners of your eyes. So I try to keep it not too sharp and not to blunt and that in itself is a very tricky process However I do find with this pencil any mistakes can easily be perfected.
I've always found that once it's in place, it stays in place and that it never loses its colour after hours and hours of wear. I have found it to be quite smudgy on application though.
When applying, if you accidentally touch it, it goes all over the place making one big filthy mess. It isn't waterproof so if for any reasons tears appear do say bye bye to this and as you do watch for the mess down your face and stay away from a mirror! (do not wear at a funeral is the biggest tip I can give you at this point!).
To me its all in the preparation and the products you use along side it that help to maximize any product. Once I have it on it doesn't smudge but only cos of the process I use however I've never rubbed my eyes on a night out but I'm sure it would smudge all over the place!
However getting it off, you really do have to scrub and I do use an eye make up remover and cleanser and toner. I find with all Rimmel products, apart from the lipsticks that they are hard to remove. Like with this, once you think your face is free of product just go over your face again with toner and more comes off! It always sticks between my eyelashes like thick gunk and if I don't get it off properly I end up getting eye infections. (read my Rimmel mascara review that was truly shocking to me!) The product doesn't say hypo allergenic and I cant find out anywhere if Rimmel test on animals which worries me a bit!
Comes in Rich Brown and Black £2.99 in Boot's but can be found all over the place lol
Overall...
It's an ok product and very cheap and cheerful. It does what it says but I have many preferred brands over and above this so I wouldn't go out of my way to hunt it down and buy it. There is so much better out that that is easier to apply and far easier to remove and more reliable. I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend this but it's ok if your stuck but do shop about before plumping for this one!
Summary: If your willing to make this product 'work' for you, work it shall!
