Rimmel Precious Stones
Advantages: Great effect - Looks very nice, Quick drying, Only need a couple of coats
Disadvantages: Chips and peels off very quickly, Thick gloopy consistency
I recently picked up a bottle of 'Rimmel Precious Stones high coverage nail polish' whilst shopping in Boots. It's also available at Superdrug and most supermarkets etc. It comes in a standard 8ml glass bottle and black lid with 'full on glitter colour' written on it. It cost £3.99 and there are two colours to choose from - Diamond Dust (grey and silver) and Ruby Crush (red and silver). I chose Ruby Crush.
The brush seems slightly larger than normal and the nail varnish has a thick gloopy consistency. I can understand why it has this consistency (it's packed full of glitter!) but it doesn't make it the easiest nail varnish to apply - I find that I have to smooth the brush over each nail a few times before letting them dry. I thought the drying time might be a little longer than most standard nail varnishes but it isn't, it dries very quickly. The bottle states that you should apply 2 coats. The first time I applied the nail varnish I was surprised at how much coverage it gave with just 1 coat, however it does look most effective when you apply 2 coats (and you can't see the natural nail colour underneath). The nail varnish looks brilliant when dry, it has a really fun and eyecatching effect. It's a mix of red and silver glitter and is very striking and sparkly.
There is a downside to this nail varnish and it's a big downside. It chips very easily and peels off very quickly. I notice chips within hours of applying the nail varnish and it's pretty common for whole nails to peel off in one go! For example I applied Rimmel Precious Stones nail polish to my nails late last night and by the next afternoon every single nail is chipped in some place and one of my nails is completely bare! For this reason I normally only wear this nail varnish for short periods, no more than a few hours at a time. I find that it's pretty hard to remove the nail varnish with nail varnish remover (soak them if you're going to try it) and usually end up picking it off!
I have also used Barry M's Glitter Nail Paint, which is similar to Rimmel Precious Stones. I found that Rimmel required less coats than Barry M, but they both dried at about the same rate and they both had beautiful effects. However Barry M is easier to apply and has much more longevity than Rimmel (and is a pound cheaper!), so I think I have to crown Barry M Glitter Nail Paint as king of glitter nail varnishes!
Summary: Lovely but not long lasting.
