Advantages: Value for Money, Long Lasting, Easy Application
Disadvantages: Limited Variety of Colours
We have all been there, swept up with the beautiful thick and dark eyebrows of some of the most famous fifties icons and being constantly told by fashion magazines that thick eyebrows 'will be key this autumn/winter'. It was upon considering these thoughts that I turned to my own eyebrows earlier this year, which although dark, have had the unfortunate effect of being over plucked in my earlier teenage years. Consequently I have a few patchy areas which despite leaving my eyebrows to grow have not 'filled in'.
It was at this point that I began to look at the eyebrow pencils on the market, eyebrow pencil being a temporary measure and not likely to leave me with two thick black caterpillars plastered across my forehead like an unfortunate side effect of eyebrows that have been tattooed in. I picked up a Rimmel eyebrow pencil from my local Boots at a bargain price of £2.99 and saw it as the end to all my eyebrow worries.
The Product ~
This Rimmel eyebrow pencil is available in two standard shades when purchased in Boots and these are Hazel and Dark Brown. There is also a third colour option on the Rimmel website of Black Brown although I have yet to see this in store. Being a natural dark brown hair shade I chose the dark brown option, and I would assume that the hazel is more suited to people of lighter hair shades such as light brown and blonde. This eyebrow pencil comes in as a standard size pencil, being of the same size as a standard eye pencil. The pencil is black in colour with shiny silver text to illustrate the Rimmel brand and is topped with a brown lid and brown base to match the colour of the pencil inside. The lid itself has a built in brush to allow the user to lightly brush the pencil into the eyebrow after application.
Upon pulling off the lid, this product looks like a standard kohl pencil the contents of which can be sharpened by a standard pencil sharpener to keep the end of the pencil pointy and thus easier to apply accurately. The colour itself is very soft in consistency not unlike an eye pencil and therefore can easily be applied to the eyebrow area without having to press very hard.
The Price ~
This eyebrow pencil is very reasonable in my opinion and therefore is good for everyday use. It can be purchased in both Boots and Superdrug for £2.99.
This pencil is very easy to apply, simply make sure that the end is suitably sharpened and then lightly pencil into the desired area, and comb to blend in with the existing hairs. Rimmel claim that this pencil helps to define, sculpt and comb the area and this is true in so far as the pencil can be applied to areas with or without hair and lightly combed in. This eyebrow pencil is very resilient and will not budge when exposed to rainy weather, therefore it can easily last a day before it needs rinsing off with a standard makeup remover.
My Experience ~
Having taken this item home, I immediately set to work to fill in my eyebrows and create a thicker look. The pencil I bought was dark brown in colour and this I assumed would match my hair colour. I was slightly disappointed to learn however that the dark brown colour was slightly darker than my natural eyebrows and therefore needed a good deal of rubbing in to make the look natural. It was at this point that I decided not to draw an extension of my original eyebrow on for fear of it being really noticeable. This product could be improved by giving a larger variety of colours for all of us with an in between hair shade.
In my opinion this product works best on eyebrows that are very well groomed to begin with, and I have found that it usually works best on the shorter hairs. Mine works well to sculpt my eyebrows and by filling in the blanks I simply do a thorough brush of the area prior to going out to make sure the colour is well dispersed. The brush applicator however does tend to get clogged up with the product after a couple of weeks of use and therefore requires regular cleaning to prevent it smudging new areas. However given the price of this product it cannot be faulted for good value for money.
I have therefore scored this makeup product 4 stars out of 5 for great value but not the best colour variety.
Thank-you for reading my review.
