The Rimmel ScandalEyes mascara I have is black, it is a waterproof mascara that comes in a very ugly orange tube. The tube is quite fat and the lid is a funny shape so not comfortable to hold at all while I'm applying my mascara.
The mascara is easy to apply because it's quite wet, that means you have to leave a long time between coats and I would recommend you make sure you do leave time because this is very bad at making your eyelashes stick together if you try to apply another coat before the first one has dried. The brush is quite large and that is supposed to sweep your lashes upwards to make your eyes look wider, I don't think this works very well but the brush deposited a lot of mascara onto my eyelashes and I think that probably weighs them down so negates the benefits of the lift of the brush.
I don't know why it's called ScandalEyes because it doesn't give a very heavy mascara appearance and I wouldn't choose this if I wanted to make an impact with my eye make up. It gives my eyelashes a nice strong black colour but doesn't add volume or length, I use two or three coats depending on why I'm applying make up in the first place (I do not wear it every day) and I think the effect would be far too fake if I tried to use more coats than that. The mascara gives my eyelashes a nice glossy finish and makes them look healthier, I have pale eyelashes so need to add colour but and I think this mascara gives me that little bit extra in that regard.
I'm grateful for the lack of volume added to my bottom eyelashes and because the mascara is so wet it glides onto even the smallest lashes at the corners on my eyes. I find the brush very easy to control even though the lid is an awkward shape in my hand while I'm applying my mascara, I never smudge mascara on the skin around my eyes and for me that's a miracle when I'm applying the mascara to my lower eyelashes!!
My review is based on the Rimmel Scandaleyes Extreme Black variety. The brand make several Scandaleyes mascaras in the range. I bought this because I liked the product description and the style of the packaging. I wear mascara most days for casual wear and for going out on more special occasions.
This comes as a 12ml tube. It's a very large tube and has a thick top which makes it easy to grip and hold between the palm and fingers during application. The brush is also larger than with other mascara products I've ever had. It's a chunky brush with a dense head of fine plastic bristles. The thin bristles are so compact on the brush head that the brush holds onto a lot of mascara when you pump it into the tube.
The mascara liquid is very dark black. When you apply this it glides onto the lash so easily and coats the lash evenly from root to tip. It seems to dry pretty much instantly too. It leaves no clumps or bobbles. It simply makes my eyelashes look much longer, thicker, darker and healthier. It has a great effect of making the eye look larger. If you have heavy eyelids this mascara is a real gem at opening up the almond shape of the eye. The mascara makes my lashes look fabulously long. In fact I was incredibly surprised the first time I applied this as I din't know my lashes were as long! If you apply more than one coat you can make your eyes look ready for a party or evening session. Otherwise it can work as a daytime mascara too.
The mascara stays on the lash and doesn't flake off or melt off during application. It can be removed fairly easily although I personally prefer to use a good eye make up removal liquid and a cotton pad rather than just using soap.
This is priced at around £7 which I'm happy to pay. It's available at chemists such as Superdrug and Boots.
I have been using Benefit’s They’re Real mascara for a while and really rated it but when I received this mascara in a Glossybox, I was excited to try it out. I used to use Rimmel mascaras when I was in my teens and really rated them but as I got older, there were so many other brands and mascaras to try and I sort of forgot that I’d liked the Rimmel ones so much.
This mascara is very chunky and is a lot bigger than my usual mascara. The tube is a chunky curved tube with a large lid which you can unscrew. When you take the brush out, the brush fits in with the rest of the packaging and is a chunky hourglass shaped brush. Compared to most other mascaras I have used, the brush on this one is about twice the size. I did wonder how effective this would be in giving my lashes the effects that it claimed. It did take a couple of attempts for me to get used to the brush but now that I have used the mascara for a few weeks, I actually like the brush and think it makes applying my mascara easier. The large brush does seem to make it easier to cover all my lashes including the smaller ones that my usual mascara misses.
I was pleasantly surprised with the effects of this mascara. It left my eyelashes looking bolder, thicker and more defined and I only needed to use one coat to get the result I was looking for – although adding another coat did give a more dramatic effect as well.
I don’t have many complaints about this mascara but one little niggle is that it does seem to take a few seconds to dry and I do occasionally find that I have to remove some of the mascara from around my eyes when I have blinked before the mascara is properly dried. I did find that it clumped slightly the first few times I used this mascara but now that I am used to it, this hasn’t happened.
I was originally interested by the brush on this mascara, as it has ball on the end, specifically to ensure every lash is captured. However after trying it I was disappointed, the brush was not great, and the product was not any better.
I found that the product flaked very easily, and would end up underneath my eye after a day of wear, not a good look. Even when applying it did not add a lot of volume or length, and I much prefer the similarly priced Maybelline mascaras, eg. The Falsies. I was not fan of the plastic wand, and the product seemed to run out quickly, however it was not the worst mascara I have tried, and may be good for those on budget. Personally I prefer longer lashes, however this may be suitable to those who want a natural look, although I certainly would not repurchase.
I have always liked Rimmel products, they have amazing face products like foundations and concealers but I especially love their mascaras. They have cheap but trusty mascaras which give the appearance of long, thick and defined lashes. I own most mascaras which Rimmel have come out with as they are so easy to afford and are widely available also.
I bought this one on the off chance that I may like it as I like most Rimmel mascaras and as it was cheap so I thought I may aswell give it a go. Unfortunately I was really let down by this mascara. I do not feel like this mascara lengthens my lashes at all. Lengthening is the most important factor in a mascara in my personal opinion as I like my eye lashes to appear very long. It also does not make my lashes as thick and luscious as other mascaras do. Thickening my lashes is important too as I naturally have pretty long lashes but they are not very thick or full. The Rimmel scandal eyes mascara didn't do what I expected it to do which was a disappointment. The packaging of this product is really cheap looking and chunky. Compared to other mascaras, even most by Rimmel this is not good quality at all.
I would not reccomend this mascara to anybody as it does not do as it should. Rimmel London do lots of mascaras for the same or a better price which work ten times as well as this one. The look of this mascara is unprofessional and messy.
Having tried other rimmel mascaras and finding their quality quite good I decided to try the scandeleyes mascara.
At first I found the packaging to be quite large and chunky, a little cumbersome to hold when applying.
After applying 1 coat of the mascara my lashes looked more separated, there wasn't any unsightly clumps like other mascaras sometimes leave.
However it didn't really do much else either, there was not much of a lengthening effect, it didn't really volume my lashes either, just made then darker and separated.
The brush applicator supplied is really bad though, it will scratch your eyes if you get a a little too close to your waterline. It's not a soft bristle brush it's a hard rubbery spiky applicator.
The price of this mascara however is reasonable especially if it's on offer, but I do believe there are better mascaras out there for a similar price.
As for the wear of the mascara I found through the day the mascara flakes off quite badly leaving a lot of black particles on my cheekbone.
In all honesty the quality of this mascara compared to others in the rimmel line is nowhere near as high, the lack or lengthening or volume is off putting as I needed three coats to get my lashes looking a little more full. The brush is scratchy and the holder of the brush too large and chunky so it doesn't fit in your hand nicely. Overall I will not be purchasing this again.
My latest mascara of choice is this Scandaleyes mascara by Rimmel.
I ended up buying two at once. I bought the waterproof version, which comes in bright orange packaging with blue shimmery writing and I bought the Scandaleyes Lycra Flex mascara which comes in bright green packaging with black writing on the front.
I have recently started wearing waterproof mascara all of the time. The Lycra Flex version is not waterproof, but I really wanted to try it and it was on offer so I decided to buy them both.
I haven’t really given the Lycra Flex version a good test yet so my review will be of the waterproof mascara.
~ Price and availability ~
I bought this mascara for £6.49, but it was part of a 3 for 2 offer at Superdrug.
It is available from anywhere that has a Rimmel counter so Boots, Wilkinson’s and some supermarkets also stock it.
I went to Savers the other day and they had a special offer on where all of their Rimmel products cost less than £5.00 including this mascara so it might be worth checking Savers out for it. I have seen this offer in Savers before, but I don’t think it is a permanent deal.
~ Packaging ~
The mascara comes in a very fat tube, which as previously mentioned, is bright orange with blue metallic writing on the side.
The lid screws off easily to reveal the brush, which is made from a normal brush material rather than some of the rubber brushes that you get these days.
The brush is very wide towards the lid and it narrows towards the tip.
The lid screws back onto the mascara easily and clicks into place when it is fully tightened.
~ In Use ~
I find this mascara is really separating and it gives my lashes great definition and fully coats them in black. It looks thick on the brush as though it might clump, but it doesn’t clump at all.
As the mascara tube is quite fat so is the ‘handle’ that you use to hold the brush and I do find that the chunky lid can be a bit awkward when I am trying to reach the shorter lashes in the corners of my eyes. It is otherwise very easy to apply. It doesn’t really give my lashes extra length or extra volume, but it gives more of a natural look, separating my lashes and giving them a coat of blackness.
I previously read bad reviews of this mascara and I opted for one of Maybelline’s Rocket waterproof mascaras, which had better reviews, but I give up on that one as soon as I got this one. I found that when it came to removing Maybelline’s waterproof mascara I would get little black clumps all over my face and it would come off in little bits, which was unpleasant. This Rimmel waterproof mascara is totally different. I find removing it is easy and it just comes off as a black smudge on a cotton wool pad just like you’d expect any mascara to. It is easy to remove with a good eye make-up remover.
It is waterproof and I have never had any trouble with it running.
The main reason I have started opting for waterproof mascaras is because otherwise I seem to get an annoying smudge just under my eyes and I end up walking around oblivious, looking like an idiot all day. I have never had any problems with it smudging.
I think this is a great mascara and I would definitely buy it again. I would recommend it. The only negative is the bulky lid, which makes it a little bit more difficult to apply.
I think mascara is one of the only items of make-up not worth spending a fortune on. I haven’t really used many high end mascaras that I can think of, but I think you can do fairly well for a fiver so why spend £25 risking getting a poor one?
This review is on scandaleyes extreme black
Price and Availability:
Rimmel is one of the biggest make-up companies around and their products including this one are widely available from Boots, Superdrug and most supermarkets for around £6.99.
The extreme black is available on eBay from £4.89 with free P&P
This comes in a sort of bullet shaped tube with a V shape carved out of the lid, the lid has the Rimmel logo engraved into the top of it.
The extreme black has a black tube with orange metallic text stating ‘Volume Flash’ ‘Scandaleyes’ ‘Mascara extreme black’ and it has a bright orange lid.
This is my favourite mascara without a doubt, in second place is Scandaleys black which I have reviewed separately.
The wand is huge and looks quite strange when you first pull it out, it is straight but a triangle shape. It is much bigger than your average mascara wand and seems to have a lot more bristles that are tightly packed together. It does look a bit intimidating, and originally made me think I was going to poke my eye out with it, but it is surprisingly easy to use, especially as it has the smaller end so you can get the tiny lashes in the corners.
This goes on easily and dries quickly so it is easy to put a few coats on but what I really love about this mascara is that you don’t have to. This gives such an intense black and full lash look, that one coat works really well. I don’t think I can say the same for any other mascara I have tired, and I have tried loads of mascaras in the past as I have really small eyes and short lashes.
I will say the look you achieve with this is not subtle but hey who wants subtle, it lengthens and thickens the lashes, and separates them well which is surprising given the bushiness of the wand.
This is not waterproof so obviously you need to be careful if you are out in the rain etc, it will run right off your face, but I think it is a risk worth taking for such a good look. It is also very easy to remove when you want to with make-up remover or simply soap and water.
This gives the best look of any mascara I have tired, it is really well priced, gives definition, volume and length. It’s only downside is that it isn’t the longest lasting mascara on the market but I will still have to give it 5 stars as it is the only mascara I have found that really does what it says it will, and at the end of the day that’s the important thing.
This is also on my Ciao account under shellyjaneo
I buy a lot of Rimmel make-up because it is usually so good but they have a few duff products in their line up too such as this mascara. It is supposed to give really big and defined lashes thanks to the brush but I just think the brush is a weird shape and it doesn''t help with coating lashes and if anything it is more difficult to use than a normal mascara brush. It doesn''t seem to load up properly with the mascara and almost feels like there is hardly anything inside even when it is new and full of mascara. It almost feels like you are dipping the brush into an empty tube and when you do finally have enough mascara on the brush it takes a few coats to get anything like the effect I want and even then it clumps my lashes up instead of separating them. The mascara had a really dry consistency which made applying it difficult and because it was so dry feeling it actually clumped my lashes together instead of separating them. They didn''t look long or luscious and even the colour was dull and muted. There was nothing about this mascara which I thought was good and there are loads of other mascaras which are better than this and which cost a lot less money. This costs 6.99 which is far too much money for something that feels and looks extremely cheap on your lashes and I wouldn''t recommend it. I expect better from Rimmel and usually they do really nice make-up but unfortunately this time it wasn''t up to their normal standard and I certainly wouldn''t consider buying it ever again.
I've always been a big fan of mascara, its the staple in my makeup draw. I think every girl wants thick black voluminous lashes, on the mascara it says 'No lash can escape! Scandalous volume, no clumps!'.
I've been using this mascara every day for a few months now after receiving it as a birthday gift and I think its a great find. I usually go for smaller brushes as they are supposed to define your lashes but I think the brush on this mascara is brilliant it may be really big but don't be intimidated. I usually see big brushes and automatically think of clumps but not with this mascara it gives you beautiful thick lashes without the fake eyelashes.
I think the only problem with this for me would be that it isn't waterproof so it doesn't withstand all of the daily routine of my life and I have a habit of rubbing my eyes so I end up with panda eyes at the end of the day not a good look!
This mascara is available at most stores like superdrug and boots but I get my makeup from markets as they are a lot cheaper than stores usually half the price. Although sometimes boots and superdrug have good offers- currently at boots its £6.99 which is still a bit expensive but it is a good quality mascara.
- available most places
- well known makeup brand
- clump free thick lashes
- cheaper compared to high end makeup brands
- not water proof
- can be expensive
I think this is a great mascara although I'm going to try different ones when mine runs out as there's always new mascaras coming out and this isn't a holy grail for me. If this is on offer in one of the shops I'd want to buy it again.I 'd definitely recommend it to a friend though, I recommended it to my sister recently and she loves it too shes even stopped wearing her false lashes as much.
I love this mascara! I use it all the time! It gives me dramatic, extra long lashes on the first coat! The second coat makes me look like I'm wearing falsies. I have no cons for this mascara, it never fails to give me huge, black, dramatic and volumised lashes! I re-purchase this everytime I run out! This honestly does wonders to my lashes, in just a few coats you have stunning lashes that could be false. You also can control it for example if you just wanted to have a little bit on if you were going To school you could just do one coat. A fabulous mascara that has been a favourite of mine for so long. I can't describe exactly how great this is. You just have to go and buy one now. If I did have to point out a downside I can never find a waterproof version of this exact scandeleyes. A great great product.
Comparable to so many great mascaras out there.
There are three versions of Rimmel's Scandal Eyes Mascara-
The Rimmel Scandal Eyes Volume Flash Mascara (orange packaging)
The Rimmel Scandal Eyes Show Off Mascara (purple packaging)-
The Rimmel Scandal Eyes Retro Glam Mascara (black and white packaging)
I personally own the orange original Volume Flash Scandal Eyes Mascara.
This version comes with a fiber brush, and it's huge! It's the biggest mascara brush I've ever seen and it does have the potential to create quite the mess so you do have to go nice and slowly when you're applying this one.
Once you've got past the fiddly job of applying, your lashes are left huge; both lengthened and volumized after just one coat, and two coats sens them into another dimensions. You get the false lash effect without wearing false lashes.
The mascara lasts all day on me, it doesn't flake or smudge and it hols the curl in my lashes too.
Rimmel Scandal Eyes is a fantastic mascara that doesn't cost the Earth retailing at £6.99 on the Boots website.
So I actually didn't have to purchase this product. I actually take surveys on prettypriceless.com.
It's just a little survey site where you take surveys, earn points and get free make up, accessories and more, sent to your home.
I chose this particular product because I have read reviews on this mascara, good and bad, but I though I'd like to give it a try myself.
I received this product in my mail box with in four weeks after ordering on prettypriceless.com and I was very excited to try it out!! I used it the next day before heading out to run some errands and at first it seemed to be doing a great job. It made my lashes look fuller and a little longer but after a couple of hours of doing errands, I got in my car and did the occasional glance at myself in the mirror and I noticed little black flakes on the corners and under my eye. I also noticed in the sunlight how clumpy my lashes looked. Needless to say, I was quite disappointed.
As far as purchasing this product, you can purchase it in the U.S. at drug stores for $1.50 or so and I noticed that on amazon this product goes for 1.98 pounds?? I am from the U.S. but I do realize this is a U.K. site so I wanted to try to put a U.K. price on here to.
Would I recommend this product, yes and no. Yes, because if you are one of those people, (like me) who would like to experience this product for yourself then I say go for it. ..... and no because I didn't have the best experience with this product.
I hope you all found this review helpful.
Thanks for reading!!
Oh, mascara how I love you. I have tried numerous mascaras in my time, and I am still on the quest for the one that is perfect for me. I think the problem with reviewing mascaras is that everyone is looking for something slightly different. I am one of those people that want it all; I want it to lengthen and volumise, with only one (or at a push two) coats, I don't want any clumps, and I want it to be waterproof but easy to remove, all for a reasonable price. Ha, I know what you're thinking
1) "Keep Dreaming"
2) "Needy, and demanding much?
So my opinion of this mascara...
Firstly, the packaging, it's very typical of drugstore mascaras the plastic tube, the only difference being, it's lime green I would like the packaging to be a bit more luxurious, but I'm not too caught up on how it looks.
Secondly, the brush... one word MASSIVE. It is very large, and that is exactly what some people are look for. Me? Not so much, but I can work with it. On the plus side, the brush does have bristles rather than the plastic spikes.
Lastly, the formulation, it makes my lashes look reasonably long, and after two coats I do get a nice amount of volume. It's not too wet, which is a massive bonus, but it's also not too dry and it doesn't clump at all. I hate it when you apply a wet mascara, then blink and end up with it everywhere.
Also, on a tangent, a mascara with a scent is the weirdest thing, I recently tried a Maybelline mascara that smelt like nappy bags... Nice.
I will definitely finish this off, but I'm not sure that I would purchase it again.
I have quite light and thin eyelashes, so like to wear mascara everyday to give myself a more wide eyed look. However, I don't really like to spend a lot on mascara as I find a lot are very overpriced for what they are. I bought scandaleyes mascara when it was on offer for £4.99, it is normally around the £6.99 mark in high street make up stores.
This mascara was easy to put on and definitely made my eyelashes look a lot bolder. The brush is quite thick however, so can be difficult to navigate and makes it quite easy to smudge mascara on your face by accident.
The main problem I have had with this mascara is that it has started to dry up a little bit around the top, this means that when I unscrew the lid, I often find little bits of dried mascara flake off and get over your clothes. Not exactly something you want when you've just put on a nice clean outfit. But I'm sure if you wipe it down regularly after use you can avoid this product.
I often fall asleep with my make up still on, and have never found that this mascara has irritated my eyes or skin by sleeping in it.
I would definitely recommend this item to a friend, and I myself would probably buy it at the more expensive price than what I originally paid.
