Advantages: Cheap, Makes Lashes Really Thick, Big Thick Brush

Disadvantages: Not Many Colours, Drying, Clumpy

I always find Rimmel as one of them go to brands for necessities. I'm a big fan of higher end make-up brands but I find myself constantly repurchasing mascara as I use it up so quickly, therefore I don't want to spend too much on them. After experimenting with all different drugstore mascaras, I found Rimmel's 'The Max' volume flash mascara to do the trick.

My lashes are already fairly black, and they are also quite long. What I look for in a mascara is volume and extra black in colour. I prefer the thick, clumpy lash look as opposed to the neat, lengthened lashes. I picked up this one having been extremely impressed with the volume flash mascara.

The packaging of this product is a hot pink tube with all the detailing written in gold. It is surprisingly quite a nice packaging, as most mascaras just opt for plain black tubes. The brush itself is full of bristles which are quite wide chunky. It is a brush and not one of the plastic applicators.

I have only seen this mascara available in black and ultra black. I went for ultra black which really brings out the colour of your eyes as it is so dark. It costs around £6-£6.50 and can be purchased in drugstores such as Superdrug and Boots, as well as in Lloyds Pharmacy and supermarkets such as Sainsburys and Morrisons.

The good things about this is that it is fairly cheap for a mascara, infact it is more than half the price of Benefit's Bad Gal Lash, and I find the Rimmel one is just as effective. I use up a whole mascara in about two months, therefore I don't want to be forking out a great deal of money constantly. Furthermore, it does exactly what I want in a mascara. It makes them the blackest black as well as giving them the volume that is needed. I can achieve this volume with only two coats of this and my eyelashes look great.

Unfortunately, every product seems to have its drawbacks and this mascara does have a few. Firstly, it is very drying in two aspects. The first is that when it's been on your lashes all day, it does feel very dry, and if you have applied lots it can become a bit flaky. The other aspect is that the product itself dries out in the tube if you don't use it up quickly. Obviously this isn't a disadvantage for me as I get through it quite quick, but if you keep it for months it will become horrible and you will find no use from it. This also will happen if you don't close the lid on it when not using it. Another disadvantage is that it is quite clumpy, and the brush gets filled up with dried up product and doesn't stay in its original shape. I've only experienced this after I've nearly finished the product. Finally, this is a mascara which really gives you the spider-legs lash finish. Some people (such as myself) really like the thick long lashes, however I know this is not everyones cup of tea.

Overall, I'm going to give this mascara four stars, simply because it is so cheap and works just as well as some higher end brand. One star knocked off for the clumpiness. Thanks for reading!
