Rimmel Volume Flash Mascara
Advantages: Does add some volume and thickness to lashes, funky & sleek design
Disadvantages: Clumps a little, not maximum effect
I'm quite a fan of Rimmel and often opt for this brand when it comes to make-up at a reasonable price. I'd seen Volume Flash mascara advertised & bought it when it had a few quid off the price; unfortunately, I found it to be a little clumpy but it does add some thickness and 'volume' to lashes.
Rimmel is a very popular brand with a large, modern range of cosmetics to choose from. I like their style and find some products can work quite well, but often the claims of mascaras don't seem to be quite fulfilled. Volume Flash is a rather funky red, almost bullet-shaped mascara with silver text detail on the front. It looks sleeks and catches your eye, so it gets a thumbs up for outer appearances from me.
This particular range now actually has a few other variants, including Volume Flash The Max, but this review is for the standard x10 Volume Flash. It claims to have a 'lock and load' formula that thickens lashes to create more volume. On the back of the mascara it is described as providing 'super-charged lashes in a flash' with 'up to 10 x more volume instantly'. Now, if my lashes actually had 10x more volume I would be a little concerned because it would be like having curtains over my eyes each time I blinked, so I wasn't expecting quite that. Just a bit of extra thickness would be nice.
After dipping the wand a few times and brushing off excess around the top, I noticed that the applicator is very 'normal' in the sense that it's straight rather than curved. I also noticed that the mascara seemed quite thick on it, so I was a little more careful when applying it. Obviously, it depends on exactly how you apply mascara and how much you use, but I tend to do two coats to get a fuller effect, and one coat with a little less if it's for more casual daytime wear.
I bought this in black and you can see the colour straight away, giving your eyes a more dramatic look. The mascara goes on easily but I did find it seemed to be a little clumpy, despite trying to get off excess on the wand first. I think the mascara itself could have done with being a little more supple and less thick in consistency to avoid this, but it did give my lashes a thicker appearance. Lashes did clump together slightly so I tried to separate any obvious lash groupings, and was pleased with the overall finished result after a few tweaks.
This should provide a good length of staying power (up to 16 hours) without clumps. I would say it lasted quite well for a few hours without smudging, and the 'volume' seemed to stay in terms of the thickness of my lashes. I wouldn't necessarily say they stayed lengthened and curled as I had them at first, so a little touch up wouldn't go amiss. It was easy enough to remove afterwards with my Simple face wipes as this isn't waterproof.
All in all, this is a 'good enough' mascara if you want to add some thickness to your lashes and draw attention to your peepers. Unfortunately I wasn't so keen on the aspect of clumping that I noticed, but it was acceptable in the sense that I've used far worse! It has fairly good staying power and creates a defined and luscious lash effect at a reasonable price.
