Advantages: Nice colours
Disadvantages: Chips after one day
~ Introduction ~
I only occasionally wear nail varnish when I use light, neutral colours. However I recently took up belly dancing and I wanted my toes and hand nails look nice while dancing. I was specifically looking for a colour that matched my costume. Of all shades available 'Velvet Rose' from Rimmel came closest to what I wanted.
~ The packaging ~
The bottle that you can see on the third product photo is small, round and has a handle of about the same size with a normal, thin brush. The black handle (annoyingly and misleadingly) says 'Up to 10 days'. The number 10 is exaggerated while the 'days' are in smallprint. (Now I see why.)
~ Application ~
This brush is quite small and is the standard thin shape, not the new fan-shaped one that appeared recently from Bourjois. The varnish can settle which means that some colour will separate out and sit on the top. There's a tiny iron ball in the bottle so just shake it before use.
The varnish is smooth and spreads easily as it is quite runny and will drip if too much of it goes on the brush. Despite the runniness, the texture is consistent and will not leave gaps. It has a very even and appearance even if you put it on in stripes or go over it second time round. I only put one layer on, if possible, with a single stroke, and it seems with this colour, one layer is absolutely fine.
There's a nice shine to the paint, I have to admit it does look nice and smooth on. It only takes on its final colour after a few seconds of application so do not worry too much before it dries which it does easily, definitely within one minute. I never touch it before, in case it hasn't dried!
~ What it claims to do ~
(As it appears on Boots.com which I removed the marketing waffle from.)
(...) up to 10 days super-durable shining colour.
Colour becomes unbelievably smooth, shiny and longer-lasting (...)
(...) designed to absorb impact and minimise chipping, and becomes 60% more shock-resistant when paired with Micro Minerals.
(...) a smooth, even film that reflects light for a brilliant, glossy finish.
~ What it does ~
Lasts for ten days? Ten 'hours' would be more accurate. It hardly lasts through the night and will definitely start chipping the next day. It will start chipping on the tips then two or three days later on the sides too. I'm starting to get fed up with correcting the chipping every night. I don't remove any varnish, I only correct the areas where it had come off. As the varnish is light, runny, putting another coat on is easy, it doesn't thicken or goes clunky. It smoothes itself on and really does look like as if I'd taken off all the paint altogether and put it back again. 1 / 5
Smooth and shine? Yes, I give it that. 4 / 5
Absorb impact, minimise chipping? The nail varnish film is too thin to be able to do that so it is definitely not chip resistant. The colour wears off even without apparent reason let alone due to impact or long term use. 1 / 5
Smooth, even film, light reflect, glossy finish? Yes, yes, yes, but we've gone through this before. Don't try to talk yourself out of this. 4 / 5 '
~ Conclusion ~
Rimmel Wear Maxx is the worst nail polish I had used and considering that I paid the same price for Wear Maxx as Maybelline Forever Strong (10ml) I'm using now. Wear Maxx hasn't lived up to half of its claims, which I find unacceptable. I would sort of accept this quality from some nail polish picked up at a car boot sale but not from one of the leading UK makeup brands.
~ Price / where to buy ~
Available at Superdrug, Boots, and pharmacies in 24 colours though not all of them are stocked at once. Boots only lists 20 colours on their website which doesn't include 'Velvet Rose' which is a sort of cerise pink colour.
£3.99 / 12ml at Superdrug / Boots
Thanks for reading.

- 05/08/08 Thats why I like having extensions as I dont have the problem with chipping nail polish! I do wear nail varnish inbetween though while my nails are resting and will definitely avoid this one! Nominated xx |
