“ Brand: Ruby and Millie / Suitable for: Eye / What it does: Smoothes, „
I bought the Ruby & Millie Eye Smudger a couple of years ago during one of their £5 off No.7/Ruby&Millie voucher campaigns and got it for around £3-£4. The handle of the brush is slightly thicker than that of other brushes I own (Avon for example) and also slightly heavier. The tip is made from foam and is fairly thick with a fine point on the end for smudging eye makeup.
==How to use the brush==
Typically I use this for smudging kohl eyeliner or a pencil eyeliner when I'm trying to get a smokey eyed look. Rather than having a harsh line, the smudger blends the colours really nicely and makes the liner a lot softer. The tip of the brush is kept quite firmly in place by the metal part of the brush which is good as it means you can smudge a bit more vigorously. I had a Body Shop smudger in the past but the quality was so poor it meant that the smudger popped out of the metal bit and was effectively redundant. The foam smudger has popped out on one side of this brush but that is after a lot of use and the other side is still firmly in place so I wouldn't say the quality of this is particularly bad but it is definitely something to look at when buying a smudger. I also use this to smudge eyeshadow under my eye as the tip on it is very fine and can get right up to the lower lash line. It isn't designed to do that but it does work well so a definite 2 for 1 for me.
I would definitely buy the product again, particularly as so many similar items are £20+ for not as good quality items, however, unfortunately Ruby & Millie are no more :( so when and if I do need a new smudger I will be reading up some review from DooYoo to see which is a good alternative. There is a chance you could buy this on eBay or Amazon if you keep your eyes peeled on there. Overall a great quality brush that puts many expensive alternatives to shame.
I go to Boots quite often, and therefore end up with a fair few of their '£5 off' discount vouchers for a few chosen brands. This has meant that I've managed to get this product for free. As far as I remember, this product was exactly £5 from Boots.
I was quite excited after buying this product since I really love the smokey eye look and envisaged using this smudge stick to death...Unfortunately it really wasn't to be...
This smudge stick is quite long at around 17cm and looks very nicely designed. The stick is a dark glittery grey colour and the black sponge tip is between 0.5-1cm long, and around 0.5cm thick with a tapered end. It comes packaged in standard see-through plastic. There isn't much written on the smudge stick other than: "RUBY & MILLIE Eye Smudge 7mm." It also has a sticker on it with some manufacturing details including 'Made in Korea.'
I tried to use it for eyeshadows on my lid as well as under the lower lash line for more smokey looks, but I found that the smudge stick was uncomfortable and course as I dragged it across my skin. I wouldn't apply much force either, just enough to use the stick. Despite usually it only occasionally, I was also very disappointed that the sponge had ripped just at the base where it comes into contact with the metal band holding the sponge and the stick together. I was also disappointed that since the sponge was pretty tough and not very big, it wasn't very easy to clean. Blending wise, it did an ok job, but I prefer usually my brushes to do that. I really didn't see anything special or commendable about this product and definitely would not repurchase.
I would not pay £5 for this... !! I am giving this product 2 star since it's an OK blending product, and it might have been slightly damaged when I bought it which would easily account for why the whole tip would nearly rip off after only a few uses.
I love Ruby and Millie products, they are well made, good quality, attractive and practical. Moreover, often Boots do a five pound off Ruby and Millie voucher which means you can get this smudge stick for free! Although, frankly I would happily pay £5 for it.
I usually buy double ended eyeliner sticks with a smudge stick on one end and the eyeliner on the other. However, a few months later I end up with a mixture of eyeliners which have either lost their smudge sticks, lost their lead, or the smudge stick has become too dirty to be use in the make up bag! Being a little bit of a perfectionist, everything has to be just so, and so I decided it was time to take drastic action. I finally bought a smudge stick, and eyeliner with no smudge stick on it! Ruby and Millie was my brand of choice.
One of the best things about this smudge stick is it's length - it's longer than a pencil. Although this means you can't really carry it about in a travel case, it does increase precision. It is silver in colour, and after two months of use, it does not look worn in the slightest. The colouring is intact. As for the smudge tip itself, this is good quality (much better than the ones found on pencils), smudges with ease and shows no signs of falling off the stick!
Some use these brushes for applying eyeshadow, which can be done. I use mine for the purpose intended, smudging eyeliner. This is simple enough, apply your eyeliner and then use the smudge stick to either blend a little bit to smooth the line, or to give yourself the smokey eye look!
Conclusions, this brush is a good buy. It will save me some money in the long-run. Buying the eyeliners with tips on one end is not cheap (they tend to be about £10). So now I will be able to buy cheaper eyeliners and use this!
I have been loving Ruby & Millie brushes recently not only are they very reasonably priced but they are good quality. I purchased the Eye Smudge brush using one of the recent Boots £5 vouchers that could be used on Ruby & Millie products and No. 7 products, the eye smudge brush normally retails for only £5 from Boots.
Ruby & Millie is a make up brand that is aimed at both make up professionals and normal customers like me and you. Ruby Hammer and Millie Kendall are behind the brand, Ruby Hammer is a world renowned make up artist and Millie Kendall runs her own beauty pr company, they were approached by Boots to work on a beauty project and with that Ruby & Millie was born!
The brush has a long silver wooden handle with a small pointed rubber/foam smudger at the top which is firm but with a bit of give in it to create the perfect smudge.
I find the brush particularly good when i use eyeshadow as my eyeliner and want it smudged in for that smokey look, the eye smudge brush does that perfectly. It is a great brush maybe not an absolute essential if I had to only choose a few brushes in my bag but one that i love using as it gives a great look that makes it much easier for me to create that perfect and professional looking face!
The Ruby & Millie range has a variety of brushes and make up tools as well as an extensive make up range, all are very reasonably priced and available from Boots.
The Eye Smudge brush is a good find for my make up kit!
****Ruby & Millie Eye Smudge****
This is another thing i picked up "free" with a no7/ruby and millie voucher from boots. If you dont have any vouchers this costs £5 which i think is really cheap for a make up brush.
**About the brand**
Ruby and Millie offer make up brushes for both the average person and make up artists. I cant speak for professionals but they quality of the brushes in general are quite good and i think of them as great for the price.
This can be bought either in a big size (longer than a pencil/pen) or a shorter version to put in a holiday kit.
I tend to use this product with loose eye shadows and just dab the brush in the tub. You have to watch what type of eye shadow you use with this or that the brush is completely dry or it seems to absorb the eye shadow and you use more. I think that this brush is great for applying eye shadow to your inner eyelid or for helping to create a smudgy eye look.
Overall i would say that this brush is worth having- i have noticed that more expensive eye pencils have these on the end of them so if you get this and a cheaper eyeliner such as collection 2000(which i think works just as well) you can save some money!!
Use it to blend shadow over your lid to smooth your eye colour /
