Since I was a kid I have always had trouble with biting and picking at my nails and it got to the point where my nails were short, peeling and generally look awful! I was so embarrassed and I would always put on cheap false nails, until seeing this product on sale in Boots, and decided to give it a go and I've never looked back. This is my nail savoir!
I applied this clear varnish every night before bed and it only took a few days until I saw a major improvement in my nails. They looks longer, stopped peeling and generally looks a lot more healthier. It's easy to apply; you just need one thin coat over your full nail and it dries pretty quickly, unfortunately it does have that strong "nail varnish" smell, but it doesn't bother me too much.
I do us this product a lot so am always finding that this varnish differs in price from store to store, but it is worth the money in my eyes.
Recently I purchased this for £4.89 from Boots. As a long time user of this however I have seen the price vary from when I first started using it several years ago and have also seen the price vary between stores anywhere between £3.50-£10.00 so I think it's worth shopping around for a good price on this. Having gone through a few bottles of this in the past I can safely say though I feel its value for money. You don't need to apply much and I would say that being a regular user (I will use this a few times a week - or every day if my nails are in a really bad way) one bottle will suffice for at least a year. The bottle is 13.3ml.
The bottle comes in a white box with lots of details about the company's claims to what the product can do. The packaging also gives the impression that this product is more of a medicinal type product in the way that it aims to strengthen nails and not a cosmetic product that you would find in the make up aisles.
I found application easy - the brush is a good size and it dries very quickly. The instructions on the back of the bottle tell you to shake gently (which I never do - don't see the reason as to why?) and apply one coat underneath nails. I have also applied a coat over coloured nail polish and this does give a subtle shine. Experimenting again I have tried putting two coats of the product on however this purely ends up in a thick layer that I end up peeling off and does nothing to reinforce the nails further!
Whilst the product does nothing long term for your nails (which I guess makes sense as nails are continually growing!!) the product does really seem to strengthen nails. Whilst this in itself will help prevent/reduce the risk of split nails and nails will grow longer I cannot see how the product promotes growth and nails still grow at normal rate (fast growing nails now that would be a miracle)! Also I have found I do need to use the product on a regular basis - as the product says use daily for results!
For many years i have worked within a hospital environment, which for the most part means no make up or nail varnish, which to a girly girl like me is complete murder!
I have also noticed that due to me nearly always having to wear gloves that my nails have really suffered, becoming quite bendy and splitting really easily, this must be a problem with some of the other women i work with too, as this product was recommended by one of those!
The instructions for use are very simple, either a coat to be used as a base coat of the pink blush colour varnish (though this does dry clear thankfully!), which you can then paint one coat a day over the top of your colour, or for me a coat a day on bare coloured nails!
To be honest if there wasn't a label on the bottle saying it was a "maximum growth" formula i would have just assumed it was a clear nail varnish as it looks and smells exactly the same!
After i have used the formula for the stated amount of days i didn't really feel there was much of a difference aside from the splitting of the nails, which didn't seem to happen as readily as usual!
It does state on the bottle that once the first phase is complete (a week's worth of application of this polish!), that you should go onto phase 2, but my problem with this was the fact that the polish peels to much and too quickly, which i'm afraid in my line of work isn't acceptable, so after a week i simply gave up!
Price wise this actually cost me pennies from a bargain bin in my local discount make up store (which was lucky as i was on my way to superdrugs to look for it!), though is available via www.amazon.co.uk alongside many other products from the range quite cheaply!
This to me was an ok clear nail varnish ideal as a base coat or top coat, or even just a slight hardener, but for me there was very little discernable difference in my nails.
Thanks for reading x
I have tried several of the Sally Hansen products, attempting to get my nails strong and long and healthy. My favourite to date is Nail Growth Miracle, as it really does work, but this is a close second. I have very thin nails that break too easily and don't grow at all, so these are the problems that need addressing.
Cheaper than the Nail Growth Miracle, maximum growth costs anywhere from £3-6
The bottle is clear, showing a lightly pink liquid with a white brush attached to a long silver lid. It doesn't look exactly expensive, but it's not horrible either.
Application is a little thick and sticky I found, but it goes on easily enough. I hoped it would have a nice pink tint, but it doesn't really. It does leave your nails looking nice and shiny but it has a pretty awful smell which makes your eyes water.
If you follow the instructions to the letter it does make your nails feel a bit stronger and you will notice some growth. It isn't anywhere near as fast growth as Nail Growth Miracle, but it does work. I noticed my nails were less bendy and didn't split as easily, they stayed strong long enough to actually gain some length.
Is it worth it?
I think there are better products out there, but if you are prepared to put the effort in and follow the instructions to the letter you will get stronger and healthier nails with increased growth. One thing I do like about this compared to Nail Growth Miracle is that it doesn't make your nails as brittle. Some nail hardeners harden your nails to such an extent that they can just snap, because they can't bend at all, and this resulted in many a snapped nail, this one gives a little bit of bend to prevent too much snapping.
Also, Sally Hansen sells Maximum Growth in different nail colours which is a nice addition. But I don't find the nail colour is very good quality, it's very thin and needs a lot of coats and easily chips.
I've recently started doing my own acrylic nails since I can no longer find the time - and money! - to go and get them done. However, one of the worst parts is taking them off... I find my nails break extremely easily and I have problems with peeling and growth. Therefore, I decided to research a product that could "cure" these problems and came across Sally Hansen's Maximum Growth.
== Expectations ==
The product implies that you will get healthier, stronger nails within the space of a week. It would be good for people who have nails prone to peeling. Sally Hansen is the number one nail care expert but also offers a range of products for hands and lips, so you can expect professional results!
== Packaging ==
The product comes in the traditional Sally Hansen packaging. A small white box with a LOT of information included on every side, including instructions and what to expect. The product comes in a clear glass bottle similar to a regular nail polish, if a bit bigger, and includes a brush for application. The polish itself appears pale pink in colour.
== Application ==
Application is really simple. You apply the liquid like a regular nail polish. The liquid itself is pale pink in colour, but I did not notice much of a difference when it had been applied to my nails! Hence why, if you make a mistake, it won't show up on your skin! I found that if you get enough on the brush you can quickly use it for half your nails and therefore the product lasts for ages! It does not have a strong chemical smell like traditional nail polishes but I would still use it in a ventilated area. The product dries quickly and it feels really silky on the nails. Its appearance is clear and shiny. To get the desired effect, you must apply the product daily.
== Result ==
I've had the product on for two weeks now and I have definitely noticed a difference. My job is quite heavy-handed and I usually have short nails because they end up breaking - and yes, I am also a nail biter! After using the product, I have noticed that my nails do not break as easily, even when hit quite hard. They do not peal as easily now, but I guess that is mainly due to the layers of product on the nail.
However, I have not noticed a great result with nail growth. My nails tend to grow slowly anyway and I did not expect to have two inch nails by now... but in my opinion my nails are growing at pretty much the same rate. Perhaps people notice more of a growth because the nails become less easy to break and therefore require less cutting down!
I feel that my nails are far more healthier after using this product. I would highly recommend it for those that have just taken off nail extensions. It gets them back to their normal state in a short space of time. After a week, my nails felt smooth instead of the rough surface I was left with after soaking my nails in acetone!
== Price and Availability ==
You can buy this product from the nail section of most supermarkets and drug stores and it costs around £4 for the 13.5ml bottle. At the moment (August 2011) Boots are offering buy one get one half price on selected Sally Hansen products. Or you can do what I did and double up a £5 Tesco clubcard voucher in store and spend your voucher on this and other beauty products!
== Conclusion ==
I give this product 4/5 because it lives up to the expectation of stronger, healthier nails but I have deducted a point because I expected to see more growth over the fortnight! I would recommend it for those who want to repair their nails.

I've been biting my nails for as long as I can remember, and always told not to, as my nails would look horrible, but I find it so difficult to stop, especially now as an adult. But recently I've been very interested in having really nice normal nails, and therefore decided I should stop biting them, but I knew they would need a helping hand to become stronger and healthier, which is how I discovered Sally Hansen's Maximum Growth nail polish, which promised healthier and stronger nails.
The product looks exactly the same as any other nail polish, it is in a clear glass bottle, with a brush, which is attached to the lid of the bottle, which is a white colour. The nail polish is a light pink colour, which is nice, but not really the main selling point of the nail polish. The bottle comes in a box, which has lots of information written on, such as the product should show results in just one weeks, which I was completely excited about!
Applying the product was really easy, it was really similar to any other nail polish, with on stroke, the whole nail is covered, which is a real positive thanks to the small thin brush, which can easily be manipulated into a large brush for the thumb nails. The nail polish is thicker then most other nail polishes, which means then even less is needed for complete coverage of the nail, so I tend to use the brush dipped once in the polish for most of my nails, as it can be ineffective to have a thick layer on the nails. The nail polish dries completely clear, which can be an advantage, as I feel I can apply it over coloured nail polish's as a top coat, without effecting the colour. Sally Hansen said to apply a new layer each day, for the nail polish to work at it's best.
I was surprised with the smell of the product, as I thought it wouldn't have much of a smell, but it had a quite strong chemical like smell, not dissimilar to normal nail varnish, but much stronger. I was pretty relieved as the smell does fade when you start applying to the nails, which was a huge relief as I couldn't cope with that smell all day!
This product obviously doesn't speed up how fast your nails grow, no product can do that, but I did notice that as my nails were growing they felt much stronger, which meant they would be less likely to break and split during the growing process. Also my nails looked really healthy, as they looked brighter and felt much less fragile, then they did before I used the product. I did notice a difference in my nails within a week, but it was a small difference, which was that they felt stronger, and they were growing steadily, which made it better and easier for them to grow healthy and less likely for them to break. After using the nail polish for a month, I noticed that my nails looked gorgeous! They were much longer, but also felt much stronger, which meant my nails didn't break at all during the growing process, which my nails are prone to doing. Also my nails sustained a much healthier look, looking brighter and nicer.
One problem I noticed was when I got out of the shower, the nail polish easily came off because of the water, which was a huge disappointment, so I'd make sure you apply after a shower/bath, which means theirs less risk of the nail polish coming off.
Sally Hansen Maximum Growth nail polish is available at most pharmacists, supermarkets and beauty stores, but also online (www.sallyhansen.com) and costs around £3.25 for 13.5ml bottle. I personally brought mine in a buy on get one free offer at Boots.
When I was younger I would always bite my nails, I had tried the usual potions to stop you biting them but just got used to the taste and it didn't stop me, i decided that maybe if I could get them to growth a bit faster and could see results it may prevent me from biting them and so I bought this. I paid £3.25 for the 13.3ml bottle in superdrug probably about 5 years ago and looking on the internet now it appears that you can buy it for anything between £3 to £5.50 so best to shop around.
The potion comes in a small glass bottle wider at the bottom working up to curved shoulders and a then a long narrow screw on grey lid on the top. If you lay the bottle down and look at the base you can see that the bottle is a semi circle shapr being flat at the back and curved at the front which is an interesting shape for this type of product as usually they are round.
The product inside is a pale pinky colour and quite thick, the nail varnish smell is very strong and the applicator brush is very thin to allow good control when applying it. When applying the product it goes onto your nails clear which for me is great as when I started using the product i had never really painted my nails due to them being so short so I wasn't very neat. To use this product you simply shake the bottle and then apply 1-2 coats onto your nails, you need to reapply a coat everyday but that really isn't an issue as it only take a minute or two to dry.
The product contains a silk protein formula to protect the nails to allow them to grow and to provide some strength. I found that this product stopped me biting my nails but that was as when I bit my nails I would get bits of the dried on potion in my mouth and I didn't like the plastic feel to it so mission aaccomplished. As far for strengthening nails I would say this is a fantastic product as I used this for around a month and ever since my nails are very string and my husband jokes they are like razor blades, my nails grow nice and evenly and don't break very often.
I would rate this product and think it is well worth the money, I never even managed to go through haldf the bottle and it had the desired effect, I still actually have the remains fot he bottle and it hasn't dried out after all these years although I couldn't say how effective it would be now.
I don't find this product accelerates growth in the slightest. I wear it as it suggests on the bottle as a base coat and / or a top coat over another polish, but I have never experienced growth because I use it. It works fine as a base and top coat but even that looses its shine after a day (the bottle says to reapply everyday for 5 days) because that is not its sole purpose. It also does not really prevent chipping as the coating is so thin. However it does stop nails from staining when using bright coloured polish and it does dry really fast, so I give it credit for that. But when the product is called Maxium Growth I would expect a bit of length from it. It is one of those products that I have heard great things from but it didn't really do much for me.
I'll clear up a misconception about this product to start off with, it doesn't make your nails grow faster. I think a lot of people are expecting this when they try it and are therefore disappointed. Nothing applied to the nail surface is going to make them grow quicker, unfortunately! What this does do is makes your nails super strong so that length is acheived quicker as your nails don't crack, chip, break or flake impeeding the process.
Does it work? Oh yes! I've tried many a nail hardener etc with variable results but this stuff is the db's (if you don't know what the db's are then just rest assured that the product is fantastic). It applies easily - using a brush that looks a bit cheap but is functional. It dries to a high shine gloss and looks good on it's own but can also be used over a colour when it'll act as a protective top-coat at the same time.
The instructions advise that you reapply every 2 days then remove after a week and start again. This works if you've got the time but I tend to just apply twice a week and I get an equally good result as if I apply every 48hrs. Obviously a bottle will last much longer with reduced application.
My only thumbs down is that if you don't use it for a while, a couple of months say, it goes gloopy and thick quite quickly. It's still useable in this state but a pain to apply. Both in it's new and gloopy state the varnish dries quicker than an ordinary polish.
Overall I couldn't praise this enough. My weak, brittle nails are rendered super strong with a couple of coats and they appear to become stronger without the varnish if I continue to use it for a few months straight. This is much better than the specific nail-hardners in the Sally Hansen range and comes highly recommended!
After doing something I swore I would never do again - wearing false nails this was a nail saver! Years ago I had false nails put on that ruined my own nails and it took me years to get them back into a good condition and then last moth I decided I was going to give stick on nails ago from the shop, you know the ones you do yourself I had used these in the past and been fine. These particular ones however proved to be as bad a professional ones to remove and left my nails split and flakey this is when this product comes in. I brought it form the market for £2 for a 13.3ml bottle pretty goog and having Sally Hansen products before I had faith in the product and I was right to do so.
I have used this maximum growth nail polish on its own and as a base coat for other nail polishes and the results have been great. Within a month my nails look better the condition has improved and they are growing again a feel stronger. The liquid is clear so is fine for everyday wear and is definatley worth a buy especially if you can get it cheap like me and your nails are in need of some tlc.
Thanks for reading my review I hope you found is useful I also write on other sites under the same name.
I'd say my nails do grow at a decent speed, the only problem is when I feel like they're getting to a nice length they start to peel and break because they're really soft. My mum's used Sally Hansen products for years and she has gorgeous nails so I went ahead and brought some. The instructions say to apply one coat to start with then apply another coat daily which I think is a great idea as I find with products like this if you apply 2 or 3 coats they start to chip really easy.
I've been using this for about a week and already see a massive improvement, my nails are retaining their length, have hardened a significant amount and just generally look a lot healthier so I believe if I keep this up I'll be well on my way to compliment worthy nails and people will be trying to guess if they're real or not!
I bought maximum growth from boots for £4.39 and that may seem a little expensive to some people but I think it's soo worth it especially as the bottle will last you ages.
I love Sally Hansen proucts and like to try everything they make. They can be expensive but not when you find them at discount stores! I have a bottle of Sally Hansen Maximum Growth in sweet tulip which is a natural sort of colour and good with a french manicure.
**bargain - good value for money**
I bought this bottle from pound land more for the colour than the product promises and for a pound I really can't complain.
On the bottle it says it is nourishing nail colour. I don't tend to keep nail polish on after it's chipped but this colour with a clear base and top coat stayed chip free and shiny for five days before I removed it and only then because I wanted a change!
**Other types in the range**
I'd be interested to try the clear colour pictured on the photo above as I think this did make my nails feel quite hard, I don't know if it actually encouraged growth, more that it protects the nail from damage so they grow as a result of that, rather than breaking I think.
**a bit thin on the nail***
My polish is quite thin and as a nail varnish it needed a few coats for an even finish. It still ended up a bit see through which is why it works out better as a nail colour over a french polish with white tips I think. It does dry quite quickly too.
This stuff really stinks! I know most nail polish does but this one has extra smelly vapours which are not particularly nice when you're applying the polish.
I quite like this as a neutral and neat nail colour. I prefer vamped up nails at the weekend though so wouldn't keep applying this one all the time. My nails underneath are a bit peely at the moment so I try to keep them covered so the varnish protects them and helps me to grow out the faults. They definitely look better with varnish on at the moment, so I would recommend this as a quick layer when you just want a bit of protection but aren't wanting to showcase your nails.
Would I buy again? Yes, but moreso if I find it again in poundland!
I have mentioned in some of my previous reviews that i am a beauty therpist and have always used Sally Hansen products as i trained with these and ten years latter i am still using them.
This particular product is one that i return to everytime my nails are feeling weak and splitting.
Sally Hansen the company -
The Sally Hansen company is widely regarded as the nail experts and have always specialized in nail care and nail treatments, they now also offer nail colours, lip colours and self tan.
The Sally Hansen company also has a fantastic website which offers a nail clinic to help your solve any other nail problems or conditions
Where can i buy it -
Sally Hansen products are available in chemists, department stores and some supermarkets and costs approx £4.50
The product -
The product comes in a clear glass bottle with a grey lid, it contains 13ml of the treatment which is a pink colour with a thick gloss style consistency.
It claims that you will get stronger and more beautiful nails in just one week.
It is a daily nail treatment with a exclusive silk protein that gives nail the strength and protection that they need to grow.
How to use it -
The first time that you use the product make sure that your nail are clean and dry, then apply one coat and allow it to dry fully and then apply a second coat, this seals and protects your nails and then you need to apply a new coat daily.
It can be used on its own and over nail colour.
The results -
Instantly my nails feel smooth and protected and i also find that it doubles as a great base coat.
As you are applying it daily this greatly increases the strength of your nails as they are very protected and within a week i can see a difference in the length of my nails but as i will explain in my conclusion i am not sure that there is a secret growth formula.
My conclusion -
If you have short, problem nails that break or will not grow than this is the perfect product for you.
As i said in earlier it does make your nails grow however i think that this is down to the fact that it strengthens your nails and provides a hard base and as you apply it daily this increased the strength so that your nails are less likely to spilt or break and this is why it works rather than a secret growth ingredient.
There are also many things that you can do at home that will also give you a similar effect for no cost.
It goes without saying that if you have a healthy diet this will improve the condition and strength of your nails.
Try not to let them be in water for too long and always wear rubber gloves to do the washing up!
Applying a base and top coat will protect your nails and make your colour last longer.
Rubbing some olive oil in to the whole nail and cuticle will also strengthen your nails.
A while ago and for the for the first time, I tried a growth product for nails. My nails were ok, but they had never grown to a length that I was truly happy with. But I had entered a competition to win a holiday and was lucky enough to get a runners up prize, a Sally Hansen Goody Bag.
So it was free and I might as well try it.
The proof is in my nails, I now have longer nails and they are also strong and they don't split. I am a strong believer that what is inside you effects your outside more than any lotions and potions, but I cannot deny that since using this product my nails have lengthened and improved.
The only other person I know who made a dramatic change to her nails was a girl I used to work with, she started eating a cube of jelly every day- but I am a veggie- so that option was an undesirable proposition.
I used to apply the nail treatment once a week, although the recommendation is every five days. It looks and is applied just like a clear nail polish. You can either just apply one coat and leave it at that or apply one coat as a base coat and then apply a final coat over your polish. Now that my nails are ok- I just use as a base coat occasionally-( for occasionally-read when I remember!).
I have checked out the current price in Boots and it is £4.16 (at the time of writing also on a buy one get one half price deal). It lasts as long as a normal polish and so I consider it very good value for money.
If you have long, beautiful and strong nails- fine- but if like me your nals were shorter and prone to break -I would recommend it.
No one ever commented on my nails before- now I receive compliments- that to me says it all really.
Sally Hansen Maximum Growth - A daily nail growth programme
I have used Sally Hansen Maximum Growth for quite a few years on and off and always have a bottle ready for when my nails feel particularly weak and short or have hewed away at them through stress. I don't actively grow my nails or wear any acrylics etc but do try to keep them moisturised and nourished.
What is it and what is special about it?
Sally Hansen Maximum growth is a daily nail growth programme which is a nail varnish that you use daily and build up to strengthen your nails. It has a silk protein formula and is dermatologically tested. You are meant to apply 1-2 coats the first time and then apply daily following that. The idea is that by building up the layers of this stuff you will reinforce your nails. This allows your nails to become stronger and is meant to be a solution to short or problem nails. It is recommended for soft or weak nails and those who have a tendency to bite their nails! (Which is me and have done for years) the nails should be then reinforced and stop them from peeling or chipping.
Applying it/using it
It comes in a 13.3ml bottle with a silver screw cap top and the application brush is quite long. You apply this like any normal nail varnish although the texture of this is thicker but feels smoother than nail varnish. You apply two coats on first application and it dries pretty quickly for the second coat to go on. It does have a little off putting smell to it as quite strong (stronger than most normal nail varnishes). Once applied if you dare to try to bite your nails this stuff works as a good barrier to that as it tastes foul and bitter. You should keep adding layers for about 5 days and after the first coat add your nail colour before building the layers. I don't always follow it with nail varnish colour.
I generally like this stuff as it does improve my nails when I have bitten away at the as it genuinely does strengthen them. The taste of the stuff on my nails puts me off from biting them. As well as strengthening them they do look shinier too. I then get a few weeks of nails that start to look strengthened and grow. However sometimes once you have put the different layers on and your nail varnish I find it is easy to peel off and too tempting to do so. This then means you have to reapply. It has lasted me ages though - up to 6months as I don't use it all the time. It also doesn't cake up or go gooey like some nail varnishes once kept for a while. So I would recommend it to fellow nail biters or those who have short or weak nails.
It is not that expensive to but and I think I bought mine form Asda or Boots. It costs about £3-4 which is good considering the time it lasts. You can probably buy it online too there seems to be the clear version which I have or a pink coloured version. Sally Hansen also has their own website (this is US based so price link to shops wont be relevant for the uk) to find out more facts and ingredient details. (www.sallyhansen.com)
Powerful protection for short, problem nails /
