Shiseido Sun Care Protection Liquid Foundation SPF 30
Being careful in the sun is really important to me. This is because, as I have mentioned in previous reviews, my father has been battling skin cancer on his face for some years now. He used to say to me "turn your little choppers to the sun" when I was a child, which was to encourage me to warm up my rather pale skin, but having seen the disastrous consequences that has resulted from his love of doing just that, I am now very wary of even a few minutes outside without sun protection.
There are many moisturisers now with SPF to choose from, and increasingly foundations with high SPF are coming onto the market. I have been very pleased with Estée Lauder BB cream for example which gives a lovely dewy finish whilst still providing an SPF of 35. Prior to my recent holiday I had read some good reviews online for a Japanese foundation by the famous make Shiseido, called "Shiseido Sun Care Protection Liquid Foundation SPF 30". This was reported to be a slightly higher coverage than the Estée Lauder being a foundation as opposed to a BB cream. Many foundations do have SPF in them, but they tend to be lower as they can cause flash back on photography which makes them less appealing for everyday wear. I decided to purchase the Shiseido foundation as in previous holidays I had packed two products- the BB cream for day wear and a foundation for the evening, but as the reviews for the Shiseido product were so positive I thought I would try to only pack one product this time saving weight and space in my luggage.
I was hesitant at first as the price of this foundation is £28, which is quite hefty for what appears to be a very small bottle of 30mls. However reviews stated that this product was so easy to apply and that only a few drops were needed to cover the entire face, so this was encouraging. Further reading on my favourite make-up review site- Makeupalley.com also endorsed the view that this foundation was excellent value for money. In fact 77% of reviewers there would repurchase this product awarding it an impressive 4.2 out of 5 with 318 reviewers contributing. This is an impressive score as reviewers over there are very discerning and rarely award products high ratings unless they really are outstanding. So what was my experience and how did it compare to their thoughts on the product?
Where To Buy And Product Details.
I ordered my foundation from the online website at Feelunique.co.uk. I have used this site many times and always found them to be professional, and delivery is quick and the packaging is secure. You can also get cash back from this site by clicking through from a cash back site, as it is affiliated to several of the large ones such as Topcashback. The product is also available from department stores including John Lewis and House of Fraser.
The foundation is supplied in a neat little rounded blue bottle and is presented in an attractive cardboard box. It comes with a sponge applicator so if you choose to use this method it is very handy. The foundation is said to resist perspiration water and oil, and to impart a soft matte look on the skin that lasts even when participating in outdoor activities in intense heat. It is said to glide on smoothly and evenly and to be light on the skin. The foundation also claims to last for hours on the skin remaining true to the colour applied and fresh looking. Additionally it is fully water resistant. The foundation is for all skin types, provides full coverage, and as stated before it is factor 30. I believe there is another version which is SPF 42 that is available in the US. The foundation I am reviewing has protection against UVA and UVB and has an ingredient called Rose Apple Leaf Extract which is an antioxidant added to help prevent damage to DNA by the sun's rays.
So do these claims hold true in reality?
I have recently returned from a holiday to The Maldives where the heat and humidity offer the perfect place to road test this foundation which I did every day for 2 weeks. Each morning after applying a moisturiser I applied the foundation with a make up brush. I didn't use the sponge provided on holiday because in that high humidity I felt it wasn't the most hygienic, and I had tried it using a brush previously and found the effect to be exactly the same. I have also used fingers to apply and this also works perfectly so you can simply take it and go! I think it is important to mention that Shiseido do advise the use of a high factor moisturiser in places of high sun risk. I made sure that I used one with a high factor first as an added precaution when on holiday, and then reverted to a slightly lower one when using the product at home. Shiseido make an excellent sun care facial moisturiser, as do many of the French brands such as La Roche Posay. I used the Shiseido one on holiday as it made an excellent partner to the foundation, and will be reviewing this in due course. If you are interested I used the Shiseido Expert Sun Ageing Protection Lotion Plus 100ml SPF50+ Very High Protection Face/Body which is an outstanding product.
As the bottle size is so compact and only 30mls it easily fits onto your carry on luggage, which I used to my advantage as I was able to apply it just before landing as the flights I took were overnight.
You need to shake it well just before use and then dispense a few drops onto the back of your hand. It is very liquid in texture and a few drops is all you need to do your entire face. It applies like a dream spreading over the face with complete ease leaving no streaks and a flawless complexion behind. I was so impressed with the coverage as well, as being over 50 now my skin does have some imperfections, and these were camouflaged with ease, but the result was not a cakey look or even a made up one, it just looked lovely and like natural skin only much much better.
I had had some reservations as my skin is normal to dry, and following long haul flights the dry aspect is often intensified so I often use Bioderma moisturiser to counteract this. I had been slightly worried as this foundation claims to minimise oily skin issues, but this refers more to the way that skin can perspire in heat and humidity, and so there was no drying effect left on the skin at all, and the matte look was actually very flattering, even though I would normally choose a foundation that leaves a moist and dewy finish. In heat and high humidity nature provides this for you, so a product like this really is suitable for all skin types in my opinion.
In terms of the longevity claims and the water resistance I can honestly say that these were incredible. I spend most of the day snorkelling and paddling on holiday and so my skin is constantly being bathed either in sunlight or in salt water, and the foundation lasted all day well with no loss of coverage at all. Additionally I suffered no sunburn or redness on my face despite the temperature being 31c.
The shade choice offers 7 different options. I am SP40 which is very similar to NW 20 in MAC foundations. I can't tell you how impressed I am with this foundation as it feels so light on the skin after application. It is like you are not wearing anything, which is exactly what you want in hot and humid climates. If you are especially worried about sun protection you can also top it up during the day. On a couple of very intense heat afternoons on holiday I did add a little more and the effect was still natural on the skin. Shiseido advise dabbing off any excess oil or water first which I did.
Removing the product is effortless at the end of the day with make up remover. I use Bioderma for this and it comes away with ease and I have also used facial wipes which work equally well.
I think the only thing to say is that if you do like a more dewy look to the skin that this gives then you can achieve this in certain areas by adding highlighter. I do this on occasions at home and it looks very summery, but in intense heat it is not so important as the small amount of perspiration produced seems to make this take on a lovely fresh look to the skin.
I can honestly say that this product is my holy grail foundation for the summer, it is outstanding in every aspect, and is a beauty for reducing weight in luggage as it so compact and lightweight and the plastic bottle makes it a gem for travel. It leaves the skin protected from the sun and also looking natural and fresh, and imperfections are covered well making it perfect for all ages from teenagers with acne prone skin, through to ladies of maturing years like myself with a tendency to dry skin.
It lasts and lasts so the high price tag is less important, as despite using this almost daily since late May it is hardly showing any use at all as you need only a few drops each time.
This is an outstanding product. Further details can be found at www.shiseido.co.uk

I got this foundation from Macy's after reading amazing reviews online.
The price was in the medium-high range, $35 for 1 fl. oz/30 ml.
Description: Protects against powerful UVA/UVB rays with a just-applied-looking matte finish. Non-transferring liquid formula resists perspiration, water, and oil.
The plastic squeeze bottle it comes in is blue and small with a screw on cap, making it travel friendly. Shake before you use it to blend the foundation.
I am NC30 and I match to SP40. I'm pretty yellow, and SP40 is a little too peach for me, but it still works. SP50 was more yellow and could have also worked for me since the colors are pretty similar to each other. The color range is from SP10 to SP70, so unfortunately, darker skinned women will probably be unable to use this because of the limited shade range.
The formula is very liquidy, runny, and light. I like to use my fingers to apply it. When you apply it on your face, it applies so smoothly and feels so weightless like I'm not even wearing foundation even though it does coverage is light and can be built up to medium. Since I have combination skin, I do have some dryness in the cheeks, so make sure you moisturize before application, or the foundation will cling on to dry patches and accentuate them more. This has a matte finish, ideal for oily/combination skin types.
Here is where the miracle happens. I have combination skin with a VERY oily t-zone. Usually, I am oily within 3 hours even with the help of milk of magnesia and setting sprays and I have to blot and powder several times a day. This controlled my oil for about 7 hours which is amazing for me; I only have to blot and touch up once a day now.
Also, I sweat so much in the summer it's not even funny, but this is completely sweatproof and still manages to stay on my face.
Another bonus is the high SPF so I don't have to use a separate sunscreen. It still photographs nicely; no white cast!
