I bought this mascara along with a few other Smashbox make-up items from QVC quite a while ago, and is the last of the set I've tried. My favourite ever mascaras are the masterpiece ones from Max Factor. In fact I have yet to find a Max Factor mascara that I don't like. I'm trying to save money at the moment though and couldn't justify spending £9 on a mascara when I had this one sat in the drawer at home. Smashbox is not a very well known brand in this country and in fact I believe it's predominantly used by make-up artists rather than the general public. Coincidentally the founders of Smashbox are actually the grandsons of the make-up guru Max Factor, and so I was hoping that they would have been passed their grandfather's winning mascara formula!! This product is called bionic mascara and is apparently made using ionic technology which is where it gets its name - (b)ionic. Smashbox claim it will give longer, stronger and more voluminous lashes, is long-wearing and water resistant and conditions the lashes as you wear it. Perhaps six months or so ago these are the sorts of claims I would have fell hook, line and sinker for, however I don't know what's happened to me in the last six months, but I have gone all hard and cynical, so I wasn't going to believe any of the hype! The tube of this mascara is pretty basic being black in colour with matte silver writing. It's not the most exciting looking things taking into consideration the price and it reminds me of an Avon mascara I used a while back. To cut to the chase, what I'm trying to say here is that the packaging looks cheap! The brush of the mascara is quite narrow and is just your bog-standard brush. I often think cosmetic companies are in some sort of secret competition to invent the most ludicrous mascara brush possible, so in a way it's refreshing to see one that looks 'normal.' As far as I am aware this product just comes in two colours - jet blank and indigo ink (a navy blue) - although the indigo ink may be difficult to find in the UK. I have the jet black colour and my first impression when applying this product was that it really is a jet black - and very glossy too. Although it goes onto the lashes smoothly, the overall look it achieves is unfortunately not a good one. It definitely adds lengths, I'll give it that, but as for volume? Definitely not. In fact I've never seen my lashes look so thin and spindly! It didn't give any volume at all, but at the same time, it seemed to make my lashes stick together, so I looked like I had only about five lashes on each eye! I did try applying more coats, but the more coats I put on the worse it looked! My lashes were separated at the base, but would stick together at the top, giving a look that can only be described as messy. It looked like I'd let a five year old loose on my make-up! As for long lasting I will give it that, it does stay on pretty much all day. As for its 'water resistant' claims I have never noticed it has run, even today when I got caught in the rain, so I suppose that claim has some truth to it. It may also be worth noting that I am a contact lens wearer and have had no irritation from this mascara. This product is not widely available in the UK but should you still want to order one try QVC where you can get a two-pack for £20.50(!!) or www.beautychamber.co.uk for £8.99 Overall I was disappointed with this. Despite it's crapness (OK, that's probably not a word, but I think it sums the product up) I have worn this quite a few times, and it's the sort of product I would only recommend if you are desperate!!
