Firstly, I'd like to start the review by saying that this isn't a bad mascara - not bad at all. I will explain why I've scored it as I have...
The main basis of my score was price. There is a LOT of competition out there, whether it's budget, mid-market or high end, anyone who's been to buy mascara will know the choice is pretty mind blowing. But high price doesn't always mean a good product. Just like low price doesn't always mean a bad product.
This mascara by Smashbox isn't cheap, the price varies but the most common price seems to be around £19.50. For that amount, I'd expect something pretty special. However, it really isn't. It's perfectly useable don't get me wrong - it doesn't clump, the brush applies nicely and evenly, it doesn't smudge - but it lacks that 'wow' factor. It doesn't really lengthen the lashes or enhance them in a particularly standout way, it's just well lacks...it is very average. From a brand such as Smashbox and a product that comes with that kind of price tag, I'd just expect more for my money.
I'm pretty clueless to why this product has such good reviews, especially when there are brands offering much better products at cheaper prices, such as: L'Oreal Paris (Volume Million Lashes Mascara - £10.99), Max Factor (Masterpiece Mascara - £9.99), Maybelline (Great Lash Mascara - £4.99), Clinique (High Impact Mascara - £17.50) as well as a number of others by Rimmel. Which all enormously outperform this particular mascara by Smashbox. If it's a high end name you want then both Chanel & Dior do beautiful mascara for around £5 more than the price of this, so I would suggest you saved your money and got one of those.
Had this been cheaper, I may well have scored it higher, but it would need to be considerably less than it is now.
I accept it's very much down to personal taste and what you want from a mascara. But if you want average lashes which could be pretty much any standard mascara, I'm not exactly sure why you'd pay £19.50 for that. Which leads to think that the only thing you are really paying for here, is the name on the product. A name that in my experience, (and I've tried a lot of their products) seems to rarely exceed average.
I'm pretty devoted to my Lancome (for when I want to splash out) and Rimmel (for when I'm on a budget) mascaras, but I'm always happy to try a new one.
I got a miniature Full Exposure Mascara in a Smashbox gift set a while ago. I had never tried the Smashbox brand, but looked forward to giving it a go.
The mascara claims that it produces no clumps or flakes, and instead gives you “maximum impact, scene stealing lashes”. It comes in a small black tube with red writing.
The mascara has a standard-size brush that’s nothing to write home about. It’s larger than some, but I still find it easy to use. I don’t find it a problem applying the mascara to my lashes.
The mascara doesn’t clump and goes on my lashes smoothly. I find that it doesn’t flake throughout the day. It makes my lashes look longer and thicker, not to an overly dramatic extent though. One coat is ideal for a natural daytime look, while I apply a second coat for a more dramatic look.
This mascara isn’t as dramatic as some others I’ve tried, such as Lancome Hypnose, so it isn’t a product I often choose to wear when I’m going out. However, for the daytime, or less sophisticated evening occasions, it is ideal. A full-size tube costs £19, which I personally find a bit too much for this mascara, though I would pay the same for different products. However, if it was on offer I would consider repurchasing.
Smashbox Full Exposure Mascara is inspired by the on-set technique of layering a lengthening fibre mascara over a volumising formula, to give your longest, fullest lashes. It's priced at £19.
I like the packaging of this mascara, it's quite plain but it looks sleek and good quality. The brush is a standard bristled mascara brush and I'd say it's of a pretty standard size and shape too, it doesn't have any unique selling point about the brush like most mascaras seem to these days!
The brush picks up the mascara very evenly and so it goes onto the lashes really evenly too. It's smooth to apply and it doesn't clump in the slightest. It really coats and defines each lash leaving them perfectly separated.
I love the look this gives to my lashes, it's really amazing. It does just what it promises actually, it lengthens and volumises really well, so my lashes look long and thick and fluttery. But it is absolutely not a false lash effect. The effect is much more natural and cleaner looking than the false lash effect mascaras!
You can build this up really easily if you want a more dramatic look, and again it doesn't clump at all, so you can still get a really lovely, fairly natural look even after 2 or 3 coats.
It lasts really well on my lashes and doesn't flake or smudge throughout the day, but it isn't waterproof so chances are it will run if you cry or are caught in the rain, though I've never tested this! It is easy to remove with any decent cleanser or makeup remover.
It doesn't irritate my eyes at all, and I do wear contact lenses and it's never caused me any problems.
Absolutely, this has to be one of the best mascaras I've ever used. It's just a shame it's so expensive!
I got smashbox full exposure mascara as a present last week, from my sister. I have alway been trying to look for a professional looking mascara and this mascara fits the picture sucessfully. The brush is nice and thin and very easy to apply. I did have to do a few coats, over and over again on my lashes, but I guess that is something that mojority of mascaras do. When I opened the mascara I could feel the creaminess of the mascara, which give me a nice feeling to know what I was applying to my lashes and dosent smell or feel bad. I have had some very porr mascaras in the past, I would adivces getting one from Primark. There is only one thing I would most likey like to change and that would have to be the price (£17). Although it is a great mascara, there is a more likey chance I am going to go for cheaper price. The cost of the mascara did feak me out a bit, however if you want a very professional and giving the look of false eyelashes look and your not put off by the price then this is probably for you.
WHAT IS IT?
Black mascara from Smashbox that says it will give your eyelashes 100% extra volume and will give them curl to make them stand out better.
This mascara is the Jet Black shade and it is very black when you use the 2 coats that Smashbox recommend you to. The brush is bristles instead of plastic and I think that is always better for your eyelashes because bristles do not snag in the lash like plastic brushes do so you will not lose so many of your eyelashes. The mascara is quite thick but it applies very easy and does not clump even at the root end of my eyelashes, it looks a bit glossy on the brush but I do not think it is very shiny when I am wearing the mascara.
WHAT I THINK
I have been very happy with this mascara because when I use only 2 coats it makes my eyelashes look a lot thicker, it does not help to make them look longer and that is a pity because I do not need help with the volume of my eyelashes but wish I could find a mascara that would make them look longer so I would not have to weigh my eyes down with false eyelashes so often.
It dries very quick so I can apply my second coat straight away without having to wait and when the second coat has dried I know I will not get mascara on my skin because it is such good quality. You can use more than 2 coats but this mascara feels heavy on my eyelashes so if I put too much on I do not feel very comfortable and the effect is not very much bolder after you have used your 2 coats.
I like that it doesn't leave clumps in my eyelashes and it does not make them look like spider legs, Smashbox have said that they have added the colour on top of a formula that will produce volume. I do not know if that is a true claim but it increases volume and thickness and that is to where other people have said to me how full my eyelashes look. I like that the dark black colour does not fade and that this mascara is very easy to remove also using my eye make up remover that is a very cheap brand, it has never made my eyes feel irritated even though I wear contact lenses and some mascaras make my eyes hurt.
Smashbox Full Exposure Mascara costs about £15 and I think that is value for how effective it is.
4 Dooyoo Stars.
My sister gave me this mascara a while ago but I only recently got around to using it as I had loads of others on the go. It's not something I would normally buy for myself as it costs £17 so it was nice to get to try it out and I actually love it!
I like the design of the packaging, it looks really sleek and modern in black with red and white detail. It has a normal 'traditional' style mascara brush with actual bristles rather than the plastic ones on a lot of mascaras you get now. The brush is quite large and the bristles are arranged in quite a tightly packed spiral pattern.
It took me a while to get used to applying the mascara because the brush is quite large, so I always ended up getting blobs of mascara on the bridge of my nose and near my browbone while applying it, but now I've got more used to it I can avoid this. However I do find it impossible to apply without getting loads of it on my eyelid near the lashline, so I always have to keep a cotton bud handy to wipe it off.
I love the look this mascara gives me, it makes my lashes look really full and long but without even the slightest bit of clumpiness or them sticking together. They look so defined and perfect it's honestly amazed me. I only normally wear one coat of mascara as I don't like the false look, but with this I can easily do 2 coats without it looking really fake, and the second coat adds even more length, so it's fantastic.
It lasts really well on my lashes and I don't find it smudges or flakes, though it's not waterproof, but it is easily removed with a face wipe when I want to take it off.
All in all I really love this mascara, it's probably the best I've ever used and I just wish I could afford to use it all the time!
