I spend most of my working life wearing a uniform not surprising really seeing as I am a nurse. As a result when I go out for the evening I really like to glam up. I like to experiment with makeup and have tried several different looks and colours over the years. Recently however it is almost impossible to either flick through a magazine or turn on the television without seeing a celebrity female with the most gorgeous looking smokey eyes. Ok so I am realistic I am never going to be able to achieve Cheryl Coles smouldering looks however I decided that I would do some digging to find out what sort of products the celebrity make-up artists were using to be able to create such a look. I have to say most of the individual products were well out of my price range (well nurses don't do their jobs to get rich). While on my quest I happened upon an article which escapes me now which recommended a product called Stila Smokey eyes talking Pallete. Which promised to help the user achieve the perfect smokey eye. It is this product that I will now review.
I looked at several websites and found that the price variations for this product were from the sublime to the absolutely ridiculous. The average cost would set you back between £5 and £15. In the end I turned to good old Ebay were I managed to buy my pallete for £4.95 including postage so always happy to get a bargain I happily parted with my cash. I should also point out at this point that the product comes in different colour variations I chose the original colours which would contain browns and neutrals. Promising myself that if the item actually worked I would purchase other shades in the future.
My makeup arrived a couple of days later and in perfect condition. The product itself comes packaged in an outer box which contains the pallete within. There is also an instruction booklet between the two so when opening ensure that you don't throw it out accidentally as it is stuck to the underneath of the outer package and I nearly did exactly that!! The main product comes in an attractive silver box with a 3D graphic of a "smokey eye" which opens and closes as you move it a bit like one of those old fashioned flicker pictures. On the outside are the words Stila featured in prominent black writing. On opening the box there is a thick plastic flap which protects the four coloured eye-shadows within. You get a base colour, a lid colour, a crease colour and a liner. The top of the lid has the voice chip which when pressed tells you in audio how to achieve the perfect smokey eye.
I eagerly prepped my face with the usual cleansers and toners ready for applying my new makeup. I skimmed over the instruction booklet which shows in easy steps with pictures how to achieve the perfect smokey eye. For instructions I was delighted at how easy it was to follow them. Then I pressed the button which gave me the audio instructions. For want of a better expression the female used sounded like Mickey Mouse on speed!!!! And I really struggled to understand what it was she was trying to tell me to do. In the end I gave up with this bizarre and irritating voice and just used the paper instructions instead. If you are intending to use this product I would suggest investing in some different size make-up brushes as I have found that this is the best way to apply the product. I now routinely have three different sizes which I use specifically for applying this makeup.
To apply this product first start with the base colour and apply the colour all over the eyelid and up to just below the eyebrow. Be generous with this as it is quite a pale colour however it acts as the glue so to speak which the rest of the products sit on. I tend to use quite a wide eyebrow brush for this step. Next move on to the lid colour and apply all over the eyelid edging out just a little bit at the corners although not to much. The third step is to apply the crease colour. This is the part that I had the most difficulty with originally as if you use two much it looks like you have gone twelve rounds with Mike Tyson instead of achieving the perfect smokey eye. This is the contrast colour and with a bit of practice you will know just the right amount to apply. I use a thin brush to apply this product sweeping all over the crease of the eye. Again sweep out to the corners and create a slightly thicker edge this is what causes the dramatic effect. When it is blended right you are some way to achieveing a celebrity inspired look. The final step is to apply the liner. I take an ultra fine brush here and wet the end very slightly, then use a small amount of product. Use a little to start with and apply more if required. The liner can be applied to below both the bottom and top lashes and can be darkened or lighter as preferred by the wearer. And that is that how to achieve the perfect smokey eye look. Which can be either subtle or dramatic as desired.
I have to admit that to achieve this look took me a lot of practice. However I now routinely make my eyes up like this and have had several compliments. I now also have several different colour pallettes and colour coordinate with my outfits. This is a product that can be used by anyone with a little perserverence and practice. The downside to this item is the price variation so shop around to achieve the best deals. The other is that really irritating audio which if clearer and slower would make this such a novel product however which is not really required at all. The instruction booklet thankfully makes up for this. Overall I have been absolutely delighted with this pallette and would have no hesitation in recommending it to all. Well worth the money.
