Advantages: Cleans well, low price
Disadvantages: Left a stinging sensation around my eyes
I bought this Superdrug Skin Essentials Eye Make Up Remover as I had left my main make up remover at home whilst going to an event and I presumed that I would need some to remove some eye make up at some point or other. I had time to pop into a Superdrug nearby, to buy the cheapest eye make up remover available; I wasn't really feeling all too picky, as I was only using it on a temporary basis- it just had to be a functioning product. Luckily for me, the Superdrug Skin Essentials Eye Make Up Remover was on sale for only 50p- what a bargain, and exceptionally lucky for me too, as I could have ended up buying some eye make up remover for many times its price. The bottle at full price costs around £1, which is not bad for a make up remover at all. However, it was just meant to be a basic, 'Essential' buy, so I really wasn't expecting a lot.
This eye make up remover came in bottles of 150ml each, which is quite a lot and is bound to last you quite a while, unless you are very prone to spillages. The bottle and overall packaging is very simple, probably to match the 'Essential' product range, but I like it, as they are not making it seem like a better product than it is. The plastic bottle material is white and translucent, so you can easily measure how much make up remover you have left. The label is simple, containing the brand name and all the necessary product information- but not much else. The cap is a simple 'screw on screw off' design; the mouth opening is quite wide, making the possibility that it will spill larger. Also, the fact that it does not come with wipes (my preferred method of removing make up) or an applicator means that you have to bring your own make up pads, or even tissue, but that is the case with most more expensive brands selling bottles of make up remover. The overall aesthetics of the packaging is very simple, but pleasant. The smallish sized bottle does weigh something, just like a bottle of water would weigh something as well, but portability is really not a problem. It is very easy for you to slip it in your bag, perhaps with a couple of make up remover pads, and use it when you needed it with little to no hassle.
The directions for use printed on the label stuck on the bottle goes as follows:
"Apply with cotton wool and gently wipe away make-up from closed eye lids and lashes."
Even though it asked for cotton wool, I used cotton make up pads instead, simply because they were by far easier to use. I followed the directions, and was pleased to find that a large amount of eye make up had been removed from just one application. It worked remarkably well for such a cheap product, just as good, I would say, as my usual make up remover. I was just about to exclaim about how good this product was, when, about 10 seconds later, the stinging started.
No, it was not excruciating pain, but my skin felt sufficiently irritated and inflamed for me to know there was a problem- the skin around my eyes looked slightly red. It felt a little like a rash, or some kind of allergic reaction; I was probably allergic to something or other that they put in the make up remover. It couldn't have been the camomile in it, as I had used plenty of products with it inside, but without any negative effects. There was no lasting impact- the stinging stopped after a few minutes- however, I did not want a repeat of the experience and therefore I have discontinued the use of it. It is such a shame as I had just begun to think of it as a very promising product.
It is such a shame that my personal experience was marred- you can probably check if you are allergic to any of the ingredients or not. Had I not experienced a mini 'allergic reaction' or whatever it was, I would have given this product 5 full stars. Based on my personal experience, I would have given it 1 star. However, I am sure I am just one of the few who have faced problems with this, and I know many who have tried and loved this. It would not be fair to mark a good product down completely just because I personally had a problem with it that many will not share. I am sure that others will have a good experience with this product... it was just not right for me. So for that reason, I have decided to take the middle path and award this product with 3 out of 5 dooyoo stars.
Summary: Might be OK for you if your skin is suited to it!
