I bought this mascara quite recently as The Body Shop had a 50% sale on.
I don't often buy cosmetics from TBS, however as I do really like their eyeliner I thought the mascara would be worth trying. This retails at £10.00 per 10ml tube, which I feel is a reasonable price due to the quality. I managed to get mine for a fiver, which I am extremely pleased with and I wish I'd bought a few more while the sale was on!
This mascara is available in two shades - black and brown. As I have dark hair I opted for black, but I imagine that the brown will be handy for people who have fairer hair. The Body Shop say that the mascara defines the lashes with glossy colour and makes them appear longer. I'm always a bit wary of lengthening mascara's as they can sometimes leave my lashes looking like spider legs, and I usually opt for mascaras which thicken and lengthen.
As The Body Shop products are always good quality though I thought I'd take the risk and I'm glad I did - it doesn't have the spider leg effect on my lashes at all, thankfully! The mascara is ophthalmologically and dermatologically tested, meaning that it is suitable for people with sensetive eyes and people who wear contact lenses.
The mascara comes in an average shaped mascara tube - it's made of sturdy plastic and is grey. I am not too keen on the colour of it, but this isn't something that effects my rating as it is the actual mascara that counts, not the packaging. The mascara wand is a good length and the brush is pretty long and slender with lots of synthetic bristles.
The bristles are stubby and very close together so I was worried that they'd make my lashes clump together rather than seperate them, but I've had no issues with it clumping. The formula is very light on my lashes and although it does add a noticeable amount of length, it doesn't make my lashes feel weighed down.
The effect it gives is full, long, fluttery lashes which look subtle enough for day to day wear but as it is so buildable you could really over-do it if you wanted a more dramatic fish. The mascara is easily buildable as the formula is so lightweight (not thick or clumpy) and I find 2 coats more than enough for a noticeable improvement in the length of my lashes.
The glossy finish is discreet and it doesn't feel wet or greasy. The lasting power is impressive and it managed to stay on all day yesterday from 9am until around 4pm when we went to a theme park; it even survived the log flume with minimal smudging, which I was pleasantly suprised by as it is not waterproof as far as I'm aware.
Overall, highly recommended.
I am a big fan of The Body Shop's extensive amazingly scented skin care range, but I've never tried their make-up before purchasing the 'Define & Lengthen' mascara. From the consistently high quality products The Body Shop produce, I had really high expectations before trying out my new purchase.
I'm a sucker for bright and eye-catching packaging (stupid, I know), which evidently this mascara does not have. So I then relied on a nice catchy label to trigger my purchase - but evidently, this mascara does not have that either. Despite the mascara not meeting my usual requirements; it did, however, boast the words 'define' and 'lengthen', something we all look for in a mascara right?
After applying a thin coat of the mascara onto my eyelashes, I was thrilled to see that the mascara had done exactly what it boasted - 'define' and 'lengthen'. My eyelashes are naturally rather short, but after using this they appeared extended and surprisingly unclumpy. You do not need a lot of this product to achieve unclumpy, lengthened and defined eyelashes - which means the product lasts for a long time!
The brush is relatively thin and long, which makes it easy to apply to the corners and bottom lashes. Also, the mascara doesn't dry out - unlike most mascaras. I'd been using the mascara for almost 3 months before it ran out and that's with it being used every single day. The mascara also comes in two different colours - brown and black. You can pick it up from your local Body Shop store, from a Body Shop party or you can order it direct from the Body Shop website (www.thebodyshop.co.uk) for around £6-7, which is a lot cheaper than many other mascaras.
I would certainly recommend this mascara to anybody who wanted natural looking, elongated lashes. It doesn't really 'thicken' lashes, as some people want - but it definitely redeems itself by lengthening them. Overall, a very good buy! It's not overly expensive, and doesn't irritate eyes (even sensitive ones). And, it's ophthalmologically and dermatologically tested.
--What you get--
Tube of quality mascara
--Value for money--
I am willing to pay a reasonable amount for a good mascara as they last for ages, so on this occasion I would say it is fairly good value for money considering as I use it whenever I feel my eyes need an extra lift!
--My personal opinion--
This mascara is by one of my favourite cosmetic companies. I often find Body Shop products quite expensive, but would say that this price is about right for a quality mascara.
What I like about this is the dark brown colour. I find that black mascaras are too dark for my pale complexion, whereas this brown one is ideal for my skin tone and blonde hair. Comes in black, dark blue & brown.
It is easy to apply with usually one or two flicks with the brush to do it, and if you leave a smudge on your eye, it's easy to remove.
It's not waterproof mascara, which is good as I find waterproof mascara too tough to remove, and when you want to remove it at the end of the day it is easy to wipe off with some cleanser or just water.
It does flake a little bit over the course of the day, but overall is a really quality product.
I was shocked recently to learn that actually the Body Shop is owned by another firm who are notorious for animal testing. So even though their products are not directly animal tested, profits from the products are going into this other firms hands. So not quite as ethical as I initially imagined, however you have to realise that in most supply chains of what you buy there will inevitably be some kind of adverse effect on our planet or animals, so you just have to buy ethically where you can and do your best when you are presented with the choice!
--Where to get--
Available solely at Body Shop outlets for approximately £11, though you often get deals in the Body Shop!
Quality mascara for a not too bad price, by a supposedly ethical company.
My thin, short, stubbornly straight eyelashes have always been a pain to well, lengthen and define, and to be honest, I didn't buy this mascara with any real expectation - I'd pretty much given up and decided I was destined to have short clumpy eyelashes forever. So naturally, I was pleasantly surprised when I got some of the best results I'd had before.
I am not exaggerating when I say that without the help of mascara, my lashes are practically invisible! I've spent years of just layering the mascara up with countless coats, but even then they weren't great - I'd tried almost every brand and product available from my local Boots and Superdrug, and unfortunately, simply didn't have the money to make a habit of buying higher end branded make-up, which did indeed make the difference. The Body Shop didn't always come straight to mind when I thought of make-up, but since the discovery of the amazingly soft make-up brushes (highly recommended!), I admit to having a small obsession.
But back to the mascara, The Body Shop Define and Lengthen can be found in quite a slim, sophisticated silver tube, and the brush is also quite thin, but also longer than the average. When taken out of the tube, I find a perfect amount of mascara coating the brush; not too much so that your lashes turn clumpy, but enough to not have to apply more than two coats (quite a problem in the past for my poor lashes). Even if I do layer up for extra definition, my lashes will never turn clumpy using this mascara; the Body Shop has perfected that.
When I apply this, combined with my No.7 eyelash curler, my lashes look noticeably longer and slightly thicker and darker, and create a perfect natural eye for the daytime. I must work wonders for people who already have thick or long eyelashes!
However, there are still some criticisms I would give to The Body Shop; I've noticed that sometimes this mascara flakes off slightly through the day, and a few times I've found my lashes naked in their practically invisible glory! This really is a massive disappointment as I'd thought my search for the perfect mascara was over. I usually apply my make-up quite early in the morning (7am-ish) and would occasionally have to reapply during the day around lunch time. As this is not a regular occurance, this problem may well be because of weather conditions disagreeing with the ingredients, but of course regardless, it is a misconvenience. Many other mascaras I have tried, some cheaper, have had better staying power than this, so this is definitely the biggest let down.
Another minor thing I've noticed, since using my new love Diorshow Extase, is that the black colour of the mascara isn't completely black, especially as it wears off. This isn't a massive problem, but since swapping between both, I've been able to see the colour difference quite obviously. This isn't a major problem, but as a result I wouldn't recommend this mascara for dramatic eyelashes, although I would highly recommend it for during a normal work day.
The Body Shop Company is based on using natural ingredients and on natural beauty, so it isn't exactly surprising that this mascara won't make your eyelashes look dramatically seductive. However, it does mean that you have the comfort of knowing that the company you are spending money on are very environmentally friendly. The body shop is against animal testing and each product guaranteed to be animal cruelty free and vegetarian.
This mascara is priced at exactly £10.00 at the Body Shop. I do think this is reasonably priced; despite the lack of staying power, the wonders this does for my lashes outweighs the negative, and reapplication is do-able although inconvienient. The body shop has a large range of different mascaras, all targeted at different specific types of eyelashes to suit everybody, I just found this to be the most appealing. As this is the first mascara I have tried from the company, encouraged, I will probably try another mascara (all are priced at £10), but it is not unlikely that I buy this mascara in the future once again; this is not a perfect product, but I am yet to find one that is, and this is definitely the best natural look I've ever found.
I purchased a tube of The Body Shop's Define and Lengthen Mascara by accident. I thought I'd ordered a Divide And Multiply Mascara, but this arrived instead. To be honest I'm not that surprised that I made this error, because I was in a rush, both products sound alike and the packaging is very similar. The only difference being that the Define and Lengthen Mascara comes in a silver tube rather than a dark green one.
I paid £11.00 for this product (which is pretty average for a mascara) and I bought it on-line from www.thebodyshop.co.uk, but you can also pick it in-store (there's a Body Shop store on almost every highstreet), or alternatively you can buy a tube up at a Body Shop at home party.
With this being a Body Shop product, it goes without saying that it's made out of natural products, including glycerine, that helps to conditions the lashes and it also helps to prevent the mascara from flaking.
Because this mascara contains natural ingredients (and also due to hygiene reasons), you shouldn't use it for much more than six months before you replace it. The natural aspect of thsi mascara also means that it's suitable for people with sensitive skin, because it doesn't contain any artificial nasties that will irritate.
The mascara has quite a smooth consistency that isn't too runny or dry and the mascara brush itself has quite fine bristles so it's easy to apply an even coat of mascara onto your lashes. However when I apply this product my eye lashes aren't dramatically extended the results aren't spectacular or extraordinary - I could be using any mascara.
I'd say that this is a bog-standard mascara and I've been fairly disappointed with the results, especially considering it's a Body Shop product. The Divide And Multiply Mascara has a much better effect on my lashes - which is probably down to the comb-like brush, because having tried a number of mascaras within the Body Shop range I don't think the mascara itself is actually that different, but the applicators are - and the Define and Lengthen Mascara applicator isn't much cop.
I can only award this product three stars and in future I will pay more attention when I'm making my Body Shop mascara order, to ensure that I don't buy the wrong one by mistake!
The Body Shop Define and Lengthen Mascara is a product that I bought when I was a member of the Love your Body Card scheme. It cost £10 for a 10 ml tube.
I have fair skin and blonde hair, so nature did not bless me with thick, dark lashes! I get quite jealous of my husband and kids, who all have very thick, lustrous eyelashes! When I get ready in the mornings, I always make a point of applying a little mascara and a slash of lippy, just so I can look human, if I haven't time to put a "full face" on.
Define and Lengthen Mascara comes in a silver tube with a shiny silver screw on lid, which has the applicator wand inside. Unlike many mascaras, this is really user friendly because the product inside does not have a tendency to clup and clog around the edge of the lid. The brush applicator is a nice design. The bristles are quite short, and curl around the wand in a spiral shape. The bristles are very closely packed together. When you extract the brush from the tube, it is coated with just the right amount of mascara, you don't have to spend ages wiping off lots of excess product.
You apply the mascara along the lashes from root to tip. As the consistency of the product is thick and creamy, one coat is usually all that is required. True to the name, the mascara defines each lash beautifully, adding a little length as well. The mascara has the effect of opening up the eye and gives the appearance that the lashes have been treated with eyelash curlers, as they curl upwards and outwards. The mascara lasts well all day.
I suffer from eczema and sensitive skin, and have had problems with eye make up in the past. I have never experienced any sort of irritation using this product, and find it very easy to remove at the end of the day with a little eye make up remover on a cotton wool pad, which sweeps away all traces of the mascara.
The product life is 6 months from opening, but I must admit I have been really naughty, having used the same tube for the last 18 months! Yes, I know, I will probably get a yukky eye infection and go blind, but the tube just lasts and lasts....!
The Body shop always source their ingredients ethically, and help communities in poor countries with their community trade initiatives. Two of the ingredients have been sourced this way. The following is a quote from the Body Shop website:
"Marula oil comes from the marula tree, native to Southern Africa. The oil is rich in oleic acid, essential to the maintenance of healthy-looking skin. The Body Shop trades with the Eudafano Womens Cooperative in northern Namibia, which helps women in rural communities who have very few opportunities to earn money. The trade with our company has helped more than 750 women and their families to benefit from this traditional, yet underutilized natural resource.
Beeswax - Zambia based, North Western Bee Products are the suppliers, for whom we have been trading with since 1991. The Zambian Honey we use in our products comes from the remote tropical forests of north west Zambia, where it's farmed using traditional methods that preserve the forest and beekeepers' way of life."
In conclusion then, I would definitely buy the product again, and have a hard time thinking of anything bad to say about it! It is good for my sensitive skin, makes my eyes look amazing, is easy and straightforward to apply and benefits communities in poor countries. The product is available in 2 shades, brown and black. I have the brown shade, as it gives a more natural look, but the black would look really dramatic for a night out! I will certainly be buying this agin and it gets 5 stars from me.
This mascara is, in my opinion, brilliant.
As I naturally have pretty long, thick eye lashes, all i really wanted was a mascara that would delicately coat the tips of my lashes (which are blonde!) to lengthen them, with a brush that wouldn't clump them altogether. I got all that from the define and lengthen mascara from the body shop. The brush is cleverly designed to prevent clumping and 'define' lashes and is slim enough to reach the corners without smudging.
In terms of price, I can see that it is a little more expensive than most would pay for a commercial mascara (£10), but given that it 100% delivers and comes from a brand a feel I can trust, I don't mind the extra cost.
I suppose the only downside for me is that it isn't waterproof and sadly the bodyshop's waterproof line doens't quite deliver like this one. However, it isn't advertised as waterproof so can't really be marked down for that!
This is the perfect choice for those who prefer a natural look and simply want to enhance the lashes they already have without extreme volume or fancy colours.
Before I got this Bodyshop gift set I have never tried any mascaraa from this shop but I was very happy to get two new ones contained in this set. This "Define & Lengthen Mascara" was one of the two I got and the one I chose to use first. My mom has being using this mascara for ages and she always says how great it is so I was looking forward to trying it out and I hoped it would be good as my mom said it was - I cant decide whether it is or not.
This mascara comes in a 10ml silver tube and has a 6 month shelf life - you arent supposed to keep mascara for longer than that anyway so thats pretty good. This mascara only comes in two colours : Brown & Black (I have the black colour) but most mascara ranges only have those two shades anyway so I suppose the lack of variety cant be classed as a disadvantage. The brush of this mascara is actually a little bit thinner than most I have tried and it comes in a sort of cone shape - I guess this is designed so you can coat every lash even the tiny ones but I often find that when companys change the shape of their brushes it actually makes it harder to apply but there is nothing majorly special about the brushes size or design.
[Found On The Bodyshop Website]
This mascara contains:
Marula Oil - Is a very effective moisturiser that also helps to condition the skin over time. Also provides essential fatty acids that help to repair the skin's moisture barrier, thus helping to restore moisture, smoothness and suppleness.
Organic Beeswax - Moisturises and helps to condition the skin. Acts as a barrier that helps to seal in moisture.
Glycerine - Conditions the lashes. Helps prevent the product from flaking.
So after reading all of those special added ingredients it seems that they have it all covered and they have added everything that a mascara could possibly need but would it work like that in reality?
Despite the brush being a bit different in shape I dont think it makes it any easier or harder to apply except it may be a little bit easier to get to the really small lashes in the corner of your eye. The mascara goes on really evenly and you dont get any clumps at all - this mascara is a tiny bit runnier than others I have tried but I dont think that makes any difference to the colour or the way you apply it to your lashes. The only thing is it may take a little while longer to dry but not by to much.
This is the part where I had a tiny bit of an issue. When I was applying this I found that no matter how much I was putting on my lashes just werent getting any thicker and there was absolutely zero volume. However Im not to sure whether or not I can count that as a disadvantage because the product description makes no promises to add volume - Im definately a big volume girl though!
However everything else about this mascara is great, it really does define and lengthen you lashes as soon as you apply just a tiny bit and it gives your eyes a really wide eyed natural look. I was quite surprised how long this made my lashes and they instantly looked my awake and in turn made me look more alive! This is a great mascara overall but I reckon its better if your going for a more natural look rather than a night out, evening image. I tend to wear this in the mornings when I want my make-up to be a little more understated but I have to knock off a star for the lack of volume that bit disappointed me.
Overall though I do recommend this mascara because it is a good product, one that Ill be using for the mornings for some time to come but Ill be looking elsewhere for my night time make-up. If your looking for lengthy lashes then this is the way to go but you wont find any volume here!
