Advantages: Brightening and youthful look
Disadvantages: Not to be used and then powdered- I think The Body Shop need to enhance their tutorial
One of the steps I always complete when doing my make-up is to apply a highlighting lotion. It only takes a couple of minutes to do after you have applied foundation, and it imparts a wonderful illuminating and defining look to the cheek bones.
I have two favourites, Eyeko Cream which is a beautiful product that you can purchase on-line, and The Body Shop Radiant Highlighter. I love both of these almost equally, but The Body Shop product is sold in a tube format, which makes it slightly more appealing for travel. I also have several powder highlighters, but the creams and lotions have the advantage that they also impart moisture to the skin. As I am almost 52 I try to make sure that my skin has a dewy and youthful appearance. That isn't to say that powder highlighters are not acceptable for older skin- in fact I have some that I really love in this category, but you have to make sure that you really moisturise well with these, and they are slightly harder to work with if you are in a rush.
The Body Shop Radiant Highlighter retails for £11, but you never need to pay this as there are so many offers on the website itself, or to be gained through cash-back sites. Their own loyalty card- Love Your Body is also worth looking at as it offers discounts on purchases both online and in-store.
I think it is important to say here that in my opinion this product is suitable for those with pale skin tones only. It is a pale pink highlighter, and for this to look natural you want it to blend in with your natural skin tone, even if that has been enhanced by foundation. I have fairly light skin even in the summer as I tend to use SPF products to protect my skin from the sun, so this product suits me all through the year. If you have a medium or dark skin tone then other products may be more suitable for you. This product is only sold in one shade - pink so it has a limited market.
The way that I apply it is with a brush or my finger after I have applied my foundation. You need to look for the highest point on the cheek bones and work in a c shape around the top of these and up and onto the brow bone. If you have used a foundation brush you can apply using the same brush as some of the foundation will remain on the bristles and so will help to blend the product into the skin. I tend to use my fingers which also helps to make sure that any harsh lines are blended out as you really want this to look as natural as possible. I also then apply to the centre of my nose, again blending it out so there are no harsh lines. You can also apply this just above the top lip which also then catches the light. It is also recommended to try this under foundation which I have not tried, but this would certainly be possible from my experience of using the product so far.
If you want to conceal areas after using the product then you can do so, and if you wear powder then it is best to avoid the areas where you have highlighted.
What I love about this product is that it makes your skin look dewy and fresh and it catches the light so beautifully. It accentuates the cheeks and eye areas making you look more awake, and also thins the contours of the nose if you apply down the centre, making you look slimmer On the rare occasions that I forget to complete this step I always notice that I have omitted it, as when I look in the mirror there isn't the radiance or wellness that I normally have. I can highly recommend this product if you have been ill and look pale and tired as it brightens up the face.
I think this product is not liked as much as I would have expected by the reviewers over on Make-Up Alley. If you are new to make-up I highly recommend this website as it offers honest reviews of almost every product and shade of make-up you can buy. The rating they have is 2.9/5 from a total of 14 reviewers, less than half of whom said they would re-purchase. On closer inspection, however, I feel this review may be based more on the methods they are using to apply, which differ from mine. I think this is a criticism of The Body Shop more than anything, as they do have a video showing application tips on the website, but it isn't detailed enough in my opinion. It doesn't talk about the order of application in relation to powders or concealers. If you apply it after powder, or powder over, it is isn't going to work at all. It works especially well with cream blush, and you can apply this as soon as you have finished even before concealer. I think cream blush works better with this highlighter than powder blushes, as the blending is then easier and these are kind to more mature skins too.
This is one of the less shimmery highlighting lotions out there so you don't have to think you are going to look sparkling. It is intended to be a natural light reflecting product, and this certainly performs well and is capable of enhancing the cheek bones and making you look more awake and youthful. This lack of obvious shimmer makes it suitable to wear in the daytime as well as at night. It really imparts a subtle glow rather than a shimmering sparkle.
I think the trick is in the blending. You really want it to disappear into the foundation rather than sitting on top as a separate area. I also think it is really important to match your concealer well with the foundation so that they all marry well together. MAC is excellent for this as it makes concealers in the same shade as foundations.
So providing you apply after foundation and before concealer and blend well, I think this product is worth looking at. I certainly think highlighting is a really important make up step to complete if you want to look awake and youthful. I will certainly re-purchase. I don't use it everyday as I have others that I like, but this is a good product when used in the way I have described. A little goes a long way so the tube lasts for ages making it good value for money. Good for mature and paler skin types and youthful ladies too!
I think I would love to see full tutorials on the website detailing exactly how to use this product, as the one they show lasts less than two minutes, and lacks important information. If this was rectified I would award the product 4*. As it is now I think it lacks detail and may encourage purchases that could later be regretted.

Summary: A good highlighter with a few reservations.
