“ Brand: Too Faced / Type: Lipstick / Suitable for: Face „
Let's start with the brand. Well, I don't know much about Too Faced cosmetics as I don't think you see the range around very much. But you can get a few of the company's products in Debenhams and on various websites including asos.
The company was established in the US in 1998, and the packaging is fun and pretty - it reminds me a little of Benefit. Products are expensive - currently in Debenhams, a lipstick will set you back £16.50 and eyeshadow duos are £14.50. However, I bought this lipgloss a while go on a discount cosmetics site for a few pounds, so do shop around before you splash out!
What is Juicy Jewels?
The clue definitely isn't in the product name - and there isn't a picture on dooyoo either which doesn't help much! So I'll try and describe it as best I can.
The product I am reviewing is a double-ended lip product. On one side is a liquid lipstick (isn't this a contradiction in terms)? And on the other is a lip gloss.
The packaging of this is quite nice - it's a long tube shape with the liquid lipstick in one end and the gloss on the other - these sections are see-through so you can check out the contents very easily. They are separated by a black section in the middle. The black central section has an applicator brush on each end so you can apply the two different products.
Layer my pigments
You can use the two different lip products individually or, according to the company itself, "when layered, the pure pigments locked inside each formula combine to create the most fabulous lip looks imaginable!". Gosh. There are several different varieties of Juicy Jewels available and for each one, each of the two lip products is supposed to have a different scent and flavour which combine together to produce a whole new taste.
The version I have is called Love Lisa. The lipstick is a pale pink and is said to be butter-cream flavoured, while the gloss is a pale pearl and glittery colour, with a cake batter flavour. When paired, the company says I'll have a delicious cupcake!
The applicator on the lipstick end of the duo is a sponge applicator, and although I am not a big lipstick wearer I was very pleased with the way this went on so smoothly and easily. The colour is a very pale, slightly shiny pink and it looks quite a natural shade once on. It has a slight scent and flavour of vanilla, but this is very subtle and, while not unpleasant, isn't very exciting either! Overall I really like the colour and it isn't quite as bright pink as it appears in the tube - although you do have to be careful not to apply too much. As it is a liquid lipstick it ends up being more of a lipgloss than a lipstick in my opinion - although it isn't too shiny it doesn't have any of the heaviness that you can get from a lipstick.
The gloss is a nice pearly colour and is very glittery looking through the tube. The applicator on this end is a small brush - strange that each end has a different style applicator! Used on its own, this gloss is very shiny and feels lovely on my lips. Again, it glides on smoothly and evenly, and makes lips feel nice and soft, without being sticky. It is very glittery too which adds to the shine and gives quite a nice look to the lips which isn't too sparkly - but you can definitely see there is a touch of glitter to them! As a result, this is a good going-out gloss but not one for everyday use. To me, the taste of this is the same as the other half so the whole "delicious cupcake" thing was lost on me sadly... Will just have to eat a real one instead. *Sigh*
Using the gloss over the lipstick gives a really nice, shiny look to lips - the colour is nice and natural, yet very glossy which I think looks good. I like that the colour of the lipstick is pretty subtle - otherwise I think the gloss and glitter on the top would look way too full on. The product also has good staying power and it seems to last for a good while on lips and leaves them feeling quite nicely moisturised.
I think the lipstick on its own is good for daytime, and then the gloss on the top instantly ramps up the glam factor, making it great for the evening. So this is a super day-to-night product and a good one to slip into your bag if you're off out straight from work. You can also use these either together or on their own. In fact, I am a big fan of the gloss as it really is fun and very shiny, and I expect that I will finish this half of the product off long before the lipstick. It's quite a novel product and I really enjoy using it - but like I say it isn't for everyday use.
I think I must mention that, looking online, it is quite tricky to get hold of these glosses, and the sites I mentioned above stock other Too Faced products but not this one. I did find one cosmetics site currently selling these for over £22 which is way overpriced so beware! However, there do seem to be quite a few new ones on ebay for around the £5 mark - much more reasonable so it is well worth having a look on there, and also search around other discount cosmetics sites, a few of which seem to stock some cheap Too Faced items. When mine runs out I may well try to pick up another.
I really like using this two-in-one product and I think it's of a very high quality, which reflects well on the Too Faced brand as a whole. I am going to shop around for a few more of their items I think and I hope I'll come across some more bargains like I did with this!
Before using this product I had never really tried any Too Faced products because to be honest I thought all their products were really expensive but I dont know where I got that idea from because this lipgloss barely cost me anything! Just after Christmas one of my family members gave me a £20 House Of Fraser gift card now I dont know if you have ever been in that store but there is barely anything sold there for £20 or under so I found myself searching through the make-up aisles. I found this range quickly because of the products quirky appearance and I quickly stocked up on a few of the items on sale on the counter. So expect a lot of Too Faced reviews over the nest few days lol.
What Is Too Faced Juicy Jewels?:
One side of this product is your lipstick and on the opposite end is a clear lipgloss.
The product description says you can use these separate sides together or on their own but using the two sides together creates "a layered effect".
Me Using It:
Ive never been a massive fan of lipsticks. I find they sink in to my lips and make them look all chapped and then in turn end up drying them out but I thought Id try this one anyway.
So I decided to use both ends for my first application and in case your wondering the shade I personally used was Diamond Drenched.
So the lipstick. To be honest the way it is applied and the feel of it on your lips feels more like a lipgloss to me because it doesnt have the waxy like texture that I find lipstick has. The colour when applied to my lips looked a nice rosy pink which matched my skin tone pretty well I think. But then it came to adding the lipgloss.
The lipgloss. This particular gloss is quite sticky which I didnt like but even so it went on quite easily. The only problem was when I applied this gloss over the top of the lipstick all the "rosy" colour disappeared and left me with natural looking lips again.
I recommend when using this you use the colour side OR the gloss side because they do look fantastic when you use them separately but when used together I think they cancel each other out in a way.
On the one of the Too Faced stockists website they describe this lip product (I didnt know what to call it.) as vanilla cream & brown sugar shade. In actual fact the lipstick is a more pink colour and the gloss although it does look slightly like a pearl shade in the tube goes on clear.
How Long Do The Effects Last?:
Together: Not even 2 seconds
But separately the gloss lasted pretty much all day and the lipstick lasted around 4-5 hours so overall I think thats pretty good.
I dont think I will be going to re-stock up on this once mine runs out because overall I didnt like it THAT much. Im glad I got to try it out for basically free because Ive been dying to try out something from this range for ages but the first product I have tried hasnt left me wanting to go and buy more. Its an okay product but nothing more but worth a try if you are a fan of this range.
I think the cheapest I have seen this product sold is around £4 but I think the usual retail price is about £10 so really not worth it.
