Advantages: Stays put all day but can be smudged if desired, good for sensitive eyes, wide range of colours
Disadvantages: A bit pricey
I was surprised to notice I haven't yet reviewed Urban Decay's 24/7 eye pencils, because they are one of my favourite makeup items and one that I reach for most often.
As I like to line the waterline (the sensitive inner lower lash line), I have had all sorts of problems with eyeliners in the past. Most that are waterproof enough to have any kind of lasting power are too harsh for my eyes (especially as I wear contacts), and kohl pencils are easy on the eyes but barely last five minutes. I had heard great things about these Urban Decay pencils, however, and as they had some gift sets around last Christmas decided to treat myself.
Normally one full-size pencil will set you back £10, which I will admit is a lot to pay. My gift set had five mini pencils, and was either £15 or £20, I don't exactly remember (frivolous purchases are instantly repressed!). A pretty nice deal anyway, and as there was a neutral set and a brightly-coloured set, I opted for the brights (pictured above) so I could easily add a pop of colour to an everyday look without being too out-there for work.
That's one of my favourite things about Urban Decay, they do have some fun shades to choose from with their shadows as well as liners. There are about 15 of these pencils to choose from, ranging from brights such as electric (blue), covet (bright green) and honey (yellow) to neutrals such as zero (black), bourbon (dark brown) and yeyo (white).
While I had chosen a bright set, I was pleased that it also included Zero, as I needed an everyday black liner that agreed with me as well as fun colours for now and again. This has now become a staple in my makeup bag.
I lined my waterline, hoping for good results but knowing that I couldn't expect too much as nothing else had worked for me so far. I was pleasantly surprised! The pencils are every bit as glide-on as they claim to be, with Urban Decay stating that 50% of the ingredients are moisturising, giving a creamy texture which doesn't need warming up like some pencils do. There was definitely no tugging or snagging when used on my upper lid, and I covered my waterline in one sweep, which is great as it can often tickle or irritate to keep going over it!
The way these pencils work is that you have a few seconds to smudge out the liner before it sets, and after that it wont budge. So if you want to create a smoked-out look, you do have time to work with it, but if you want a neat line or winged eye, as long as you don't touch it directly after application, it's not going anywhere until you remove it at the end of the day. As I predominantly use this on my waterline, I like to gently pull my lower lid away from the eye so it stays dry as the liner sets, and once I realise it I can blink and go about my day knowing it wont budge.
Because it really doesn't. I've tried liners that are gone as soon as I blink once, this was still on my waterline at the end of a working day, and although some tiny bits had migrated down between my lashes a bit, you could still definitely tell I was wearing it, and it hadn't smudged or got messy-looking. Despite being so budge-proof, it's easy to remove with an eye makeup remover.
I wear this on a regular basis and it never irritates my eyes, which are pretty sensitive. It's tear-proof, smudge-proof and basically life-proof! Although £10 is pretty steep, I can see a full-size lasting a really long time as my mini has barely been sharpened, probably due to the fact that one application lasts me all day and that's pretty much one sweep across each eye. Even when it has got a little blunt, it's easy to make a precise line as you don't need to go back and forth going over the line to make it visible.
Each one comes with a cap so it's easy to take with you when you travel, which I always do as it's become a bit of an essential! You can find Urban Decay products at larger Boots stores, Debenhams and House of Fraser, as well as of course online. For a product that works just this well, and lasts a long time, I am willing to pay that bit extra so will be replacing mine as long as they keep making them!
Summary: A fantastic liner that does everything you could ask for!
