Urban decay big fatty mascara is designed to give long thick glossy lashes and it delivers quite well! However this is a very dramatic mascara so may not suit people who prefer a more natural look.
It is in a very pretty bottle with a funky name, this may put some people off as they might prefer more posh or classier looking packages especialy if you are spending a little extra but don't let it put you off!
The mascara wand as a thick chunky brush but is easier to use than you would expect. The mascara is on the thick side compared to some thinner mascaras and makes a good coating on the lashes so you notice a difference with the first coat. If you want a super dramatic look add another couple of coats and it really does make lashes a lot thicker!
When the mascara is first applied it can take a while to dry compared to most mascaras so if you are pushed for time and you apply a few coats one after the other be wary as the mascara will still be sticky for a good ten minutes after! I'm guessing it takes so Long to dry as the mascara has hemp oil in it to keep lashes moisturised an soft and this works as this mascara never dries to the extent of it feeling rough, dry, heavy and start to flake and crumble at the en of the day!
The only down side to this mascara is that their can be a build up of mascara on the end of the brush closest to the handle, this didn't effect me when I applied the mascara as I often used the other end of the brush more but it did effect the amount of product that was left around the screw top of the bottle. This meant a bit of mascara goes to waste! This is the only fault I can give it!
The only other down side is that compared to other reviews a lot of boots stores no longer sell urban decay products but I do not know if this stands for all of them! Also debenhams sell this product and their prices vary from £9.00 - £15.00 and it even states this on their website and the official Urban Decay website sells it for £20.00 so make sure you shop around!
okay i bought this mascara last christmas and have been using it pretty much everyday for the last 5 months... I bought this product from boots for £15, but have since found out it can be purchased at debenhams for only £9, gutted much? So first things first.. make sure you shop around.
I chose this mascara because i wanted a high quality mascara that's very waterproof, i'd already splurged on many makeup products so i didnt want to spend too much either however. I originally wanted to buy diorshow mascara but changed my mind, a decision i now regret.
The mascara itself is actually not bad, its got a thick round brush, which i like best for applying my mascara but my main quibble with it is that there's no chance it's waterproof in any way, after just rinsing my face with water or a few tears at a soppy film i look like a panda, not a good luck for me.
All in all i think if you're going to buy a quality brand name mascara i wouldnt go for this one although the packaging is quite funky, to me its just paying for the name as i dont think its better quality than many cheaper highstreet brands, and the waterproof feature is no good at all, i would either pay less for the same quality or pay more for a slightly better brand and hopefully quality.
I am a really big fan of Urban Decay mainly because I love the way the make up feels and I really like the wide variety of bold colours and glitters that are available from this brand. I have been using Urban Decay Big Fatty Mascara for a few years now - and it remains a firm favourite in my make-up bag.
Urban Decay's Big Fatty Mascara can be bought from just about any retail outlet that sells make-up in the mid-range and above. I tend to buy mine from Boots where it costs me generally in the range of about £15 which, in my opinion, isn't a bad price for a decent quality mascara. The thing that initially drew me to the Urban Decay Big Fatty Mascara, apart from the fact that it was part of the Urban Decay range, was that the packaging is really attractive and most certainly jumps out at you on the shelf. Its big, bright and bold and gives the impression that its something you'd wear if you want to have a good time and stand out from the crowd......and I'm not someone that enjoys being a wallflower!!
Like many mascara's, this one advertises itself as being thickening and lengthening and therefore its aim is to make your eyelashes look longer and fuller - leaving the wearer looking more beautiful! It comes with a screw top with a complimentary mascara wand attached. The wand is thick and chunky - lending itself to providing your lashes with a good coverage while removing extra goo as you remove the wand from the tube. The mascara is black - and it is a very deep dark black which is something with is preferable to me.
I find that the mascara applies to the lashes with good coverage and separates my lashes, leaving them thicker and longer-looking, and importantly, unclogged and ungloopy! It is also long lasting and will last the majority of the day with just one application.
The only complaint I have about this product is that it is not waterproof for some unknown reason, and so if you get caught in the rain, or cry, or become sweaty, unfortunately the mascara does does tend to run and leave you with unattractive panda eyes. I'm really unsure as to why Urban Decay has not made this product waterproof because it really would be an advantage and may encourage others to use it. I tend to put up with this because I like the look the thick lashes gives me, but if I find another product that gives me just as thick lashes and is waterproof then I would be tempted to switch brands.
Urban Decay Big Fatty Mascara was one of these products I couldn't make my mind up about. Sometimes I liked it, sometimes I hated it.
I don't like mascaras with big brushes. You can never get into the corner lashes and the roots can also get neglected. And bottom lashes? Forget about it unless you want to look like a panda. There is also a greater danger of getting mascara on your newly applied eyeshadow which took half an hour to get perfect due to the fact there is less control of the brush (in case you can't tell it happened to me!)
I found Big Fatty to be on OK daytime mascara- but that defeats the purpose because it claims to give super thick lashes. When you call your mascara Big Fatty I want each lash to swell to three times its normal size!
I will give credit where credit's due however. The formula is VERY black which I love. In case you haven't noticed many mascaras are just a very dark grey, which isn't obvious unless you compare it against a true black.
I did get a good deal on this mascara so I can't complain about the price aspect. I got two tubes for the price of 1 (£13 approx), and not forgetting that this mascara holds twice as much product and most other mascaras, it worked out pretty cheap. Unless I got the mascara that cheap again, I wouldn't buy it.
There are just so many better mascara out there, I think, as I have yet to find it.
The search continues....
Urban Decay is by far one of my favourite make up brands - the eyeliners, eyeshadows and lipglosses I have tried have never failed to impress with their vibrancy, ease of use and attractive packaging. So when I had a bit of spare money pushed the boat out to try a new mascara - Urban Decays Big Fatty Mascara.
Ordinarily, this mascara would definitely not have been in my price range - at around £14 from most larger Boots stores (this and Debenhams are the only place I have actually found the brand, as well as some online sites) I thought I'd treat myself to something for my holiday in the summer.
The mascara brands itself as 'Thickening and Lengthening', and comes in a, typical of Urban Decay, very vibrant and attractive packaging - the label is a sixties style with bubble writing in the colour of the tube, and complimentary colour typical sixties swirls all over it. The ordinary Black mascara is in a purple tube, with purple writing and pink and yellow packaging - but they also do a waterproof tube which was the first one I treated myself too with a metallic blue tube with blue writing and orange and yellow packaging!
The metallic tubes are very attractive, and quite thick (a rounded square about a centimetre squared by my approximations) making them easy to hold and manage. The brush itself follows in this line - and you can really see where 'Big Fatty' comes in. Before big brushes and strange shaped brushes were all the range, Urban Decay seemed to be pioneering this, with a very large brush with lots of tiny bristles that do, infact, give a very even coverage without clogging up the eyelashes as the volume separates them too (unless you put too much on) so in this respect ,I could not have been happier with the product.
The colour, I opted for typical black, is very bold and flat - just what you want from a black mascara, and does coat the eyelashes very well, just what I wanted.
However, where the product fell down for me was the very reason I first bought it - It isn't Waterproof! Now, I bought the waterproof one for my holiday - but after the first day in the pool, coming up looking like a crying panda, I realised it wasn't quite as efficient as I had hoped - in 100 degrees it did become tacky and look a little less fresh than I would have desired. Indeed, where many mascaras I have bought before have been waterproof without even stating it - this one just cannot withstand anything other than light rain! It really does make you dread to think what sorted of gothic apparition the ordinary one will make you look like if you get caught in a downpour.
Other than this minor issue, which is easily rectified by getting a more heavy duty mascara for those rainy days, I have been entirely content with this product.
-Ease of use, check
-Waterproof... not so much!
Still, I would recommend this Mascara, despite the fact I do agree it isn't quite worth the price - just, don't go forking out the price if you're looking to be safe in the rain, but for parties, a breezy summer day and those glamourous thick luscious lashes - go for it!
Since I joined Dooyoo Ive been hearing so many great things about so many different make-up ranges that Ive never been able to really afford to buy for myself before and Urban Decay is one of those ranges. Ive been wanting to try out this Big Fatty mascara for months now and when my last Dooyoo cheque flopped through the letterbox I decided to go and treat myself to a tube as soon as I could. If I had known then what I know now I doubt I would have wasted my money. Big Fatty Mascara is a big fat liar!
So I trotted off to town and bought myself a tube of this and went home to try it out later that night as I was going to a party and I wanted to try something new out. Unfortunately I didnt remember my own rule. I have a rule that I always test out products when Im just at home not doing anything before I wear them out just in case they dont work and make me look stupid. I wish I had done this with this product.
The packaging for this mascara is probably the best thing about it overall. It is very bright and funky and sort of reminds me of one of those 60's fancy dress outfits. I love the packaging mainly because I love anything that is this colourful but it just doesnt save this product from being a total disaster. This will definately attract you attention if your just browsing around a shop but my advice is not to bother picking it up. Admire it prettiness from afar. Theres nothing overlly special about the shape or size of the brush, it is very ordinary I thought but thats not necassarily a bad thing I thought as usually you dotn need to change the shape if a normal one will work fine.
As soon as I pulled the wand out of the tube I noticed my first problem. This mascara isnt really thick and black like most, in fact it seems quite runny and gloopy which makes it hard when you try and get out just enough to cover your lashes. The application part is actually pretty easy, despite its gloopiness but this is where I encountered my second problem. I found that while this mascara was covering my lashes fully with colour but it wasnt making them any longer or more curled which is the effect I get from most mascaras. I found I had to pull out my trusted eyelash curlers to make my eyes look half decent because after using this I was just left with flat, black lashes.
So when I was happy enough with the look Id created I left for this party. And by the time I got there things had already got worse. It had flaked off. And left horrible little black smudges and flakes all over my cheeks and I looked as if I still had last nights make-up on rather than freshly applied mascara. Thankfully my mate borrowed me her mascara so I could go and tidy my eyes up and that made me look much better but that is how I found out that this big fatty mascara is a big fat liar!
For 16 quid I expected this to be really good but to be honest I have had much better results from a mascara that didnt cost me half that so it really is not worth it in the slightest. This could possibly the the worst mascara I have ever tried and it is possibly the most expensive. It was gloopy, didnt make my lashes look great and it lasted about 10 minutes without flaking so it is not worth a quid let alone 16! I dont recommend at all.
Price: I Paid £16 It Could Possibly Be Cheaper Depending Where You Buy It

I had high hopes for this mascara, I'm a huge fan of Urban Decay eyeshadow and eyeliners - I'm an even bigger fan of huge eyelashes. Unfortunately, it doesn't live up to my expectations.
I spent £13.50 at a large boots store, which is far more than I pay for my usual mascara. The packaging is typically Urban Decay, it's bright and attractive and totally mis-leading.
The mascara wand is huge, which actually makes it very difficult to apply. The total overall effect is thick eyelashes but they look very clumpy. My eyelashes separated into sections and to be honest looked like it was my first attempt at ever applying make-up!
This mascara will smudge quite quickly and runs quite easily.
It will come off without much effort, but you will need face-wipes or make-up remover. Efforts with soap and water are futile!
I'm so disappointed I can't even bring myself to be sarcastic!
I have used worse, that's for sure, I just had such high hopes for this product :-( I'll keep using it as I sometimes find that mascaras will improve once you get a third of the way down the tube...if there's any improvement I'll update my review.
I bought this mascara in black cherry as I fancied wearing something a bit different than the usual black or black/brown mascara I have in my makeup box.
I actually bought the mini version as it was cheaper (£8.50) and because it isn't really an every day colour I wouldn't be using it all the time. It came in it's own little box which was dark pink and purple in a sort of 60's Austin Powers type theme. The mini version is 7.5g and I would say is just enough for special occasions or travelling.
Much as I am a fan of Urban Decay I had mixed feelings about this mascara when I tried it out.
The brush seems quite dry and when I applied it there were a few clumps on my eyelashes. I had to use quite a lot to get any kind of effect from the colour and I didn't think it opened up my eyes the way other mascaras I have tried do.
The colour was quite subtle on first application and I had to use a lot to get a stand out effect, which made my lashes then feel quite heavy.
However, it did stay put and didn't smudge, even when I rubbed my eyes. It did flake a bit though towards the end of the day but it came off easily with makeup remover.
I liked the different colour of this mascara but I don't think I would buy it again, as it was a bit of a let down compared to other mascaras on the market.
Urban Decay Big Fatty Mascara
£14 at Boots (or sometimes they have overs for a two pack so if you know someone that is also wanting this mascara, the two pack tends to be cheaper)
The mascara tube is very eye-catching (like most Urban Decay products) as the tube is very colourful with 'Big Fatty Mascara' printed in pink and a purple lid. When you take the mascara out of the tube the 'wand' is very large and thick - which is the type of mascara that I like.
The brush is very large, but I don't ever seem to have a problem applying this masacra to both my bottom and top lashes. I love this masacra and I have used it for years. I think that this mascara makes lashes appear thicker and fuller. The colour is also very dark and seems to create a thickening effect. However, the mascara is quite heavy on so I do notice that my eyelashes do drop ever so slightly throughtout the day whilst wearing this mascara therefore would not recommend this mascara to those who are looking for a curling effect. However, I tend to use eyelash curlers before applying mascara so the main reason I use this mascara is to create a dramatic thick and full lash effect. I stopped using this mascara when I found the wonder that is waterproof mascara (since my eyes are really sensitive and watery I tend to need waterproof mascara). However, Urban Decay have now brought out their waterproof version which comes in a blue tube which I haven't tried yet but I am tempted to buy once my current mascara runs out.
Overall I would definitely recommend this mascara to make lashes appear darker, fuller, longer and thicker. I feel this mascara is similar (but a lot better) to Benefit Bad Gal mascara so if you like the Bad Gal mascara, you'll love this mascara even more. The price tage of £14 is well worth it for this amazing mascara.
Now I have never really been drawn to the Urban Decay range of make up - even though it is a well known big designer name. To be honest I am not sure why, it just never seemed to appeal to me.
The first time I used this Big Fatty Mascara is when I was bought it as a birthday present. I was pretty impressed at the box it came in, and the design on the tube. Both were very bright and stood out.
The mascara brush was quite big and also quite long (I'm not sure of the actual size of the mascara tube) with the bristles very close together which I noticed made my lashes much bigger and longer. I did find to get the desired effect that I wanted I needed to use two coats of the mascara. Although this may just be me being a little bit fussy about my lashes!!
Mascara is one of my must have beauty items, mainly because I like my lashes to look very dark and very long. So although I needed to coats to get the length I wanted, my lashes were very very dark just as I like.
I found that the tube of mascara seemed to go on forever and lasted me ages and ages. It did not dry out quickly and the tube was just a perfect size to fit in my going out bag!!
I have continued to use this mascara and would recommened it to other people. Since using this I have also tried other items from this Urban Decay range and I must say.. my original opinion was very wrong - this make up is great!!
Big fatty mascara is more than just fat - if you like your mascara HEAVY this item is the product for you.
This is one of the heaviest mascaras i have ever used - its fantastic if you like the really caked on look, or have the skill to make sure your lashes do not clump together when applying such a heavy mascara (unfortunately i do not possess such a skill, causing my lashes to clump easily and get the mascara all over my face)
Points are given for the highly attractive packaging, as with all urban decay products, so it is a delight to have in your makeup box. Unfortunately i find this product to be expensive for what it is, as i didnt find it useful - HOWEVER i am a huge urban decay fan and find their other products to be high quality, and would certainly not let it put me off buying urban decay producrs in the future.
Another makeup review for me. This time Urban Decay. So as most of you know, I have worked in makeup and skincare for a year or so now. I love trying and testing things, as I have extremely high standards as to what I regularly wear on my skin. I have worked for a few big name brands, from Maxfactor and Olay to time on Chanel and Dior. The first time I used Urban Decay was actually when a friend of mine in a store I was working at, decided to give me a dramatic make-over.
It was my partners work do (the first one in his new job), so I wanted to look nice. We were going to a drag act, and I had heard all the ladies were dressing up and going bright. So Urban Decay was the right type of makeup as they are known for their bright, bold and eccentric colours. My friend started applying the makeup, and to be fair some of it felt nice on the skin - but much of it didn't. The foundation felt thick and heavy (not something which I favour), and it felt like my eyelashes were so heavy they were going to fall off. She had used Big Fatty Mascara and some glittery eyeliner which she had made into little balls of glitter at the end of my eyelashes.
That night the makeup did look lovely and I was very sparkley and bright. A few months later, I got the opportunity to work for Urban Decay for a few weeks as an agency girl. So I certainly know how it applies on the wider public!
The mascara goes on very thickly and does coat the lashes well, but a but too well on occasions. Sometimes it tends to go lumpy, the trick was to try and separate the lashes with a dry mascara wand to give a "fan-lash" look. However, that can be very time consuming, and who wants to do that everr morning?
Bright, bold tube - eyecatching. The mascara wand is thick and the brissles are long for maximum lengthning of the lashes. "Big Fatty Mascara" is written across the tube in funky, bright, bold lettering. The patterns carry on all around the tube.
Smells horrid. It smells a big like No7's new mascara - old, stale and just not very pleasant at all! Once the mascara is actually on the wand, after having it for a little while it starts to dry around the edges and the wand goes rather brittle and not something which I would want to put around my eyes.
It varies from £12 - £15, boots.com sell if for £14. Not too bad for a mascara, however I don't feel the price justifies the actual product.
I also found that many people would return this product or come back to tell me that it is not good for anyone who has even remotely sensitive eyes. To be honest, after being told this I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Many people who had never had a problem with mascara's before - were coming back to say that their eyes would start streaming and stinging after use.
Overall, not such a good product, and certainly not worth £14 when you could buy Maxfactors False Lash effect for just £10!!!
I love coloured mascaras and bought the Big Fatty Mascara in Purple Haze and Black Cherry. Now I prefer mascaras to make my lashes look longer (as they are naturally quite short and fair) rather than fatter, but as the name suggests this mascara makes lashes look thicker.
It was quite difficult to apply, as the wand is quite big and it is hard to get the mascara right at the bottom of your lashes. I did quite like the effect once it was on. The Black Cherry was especially dramatic, as it went on as a sort of dark red. The purple didn't show up quite as well.
I would recommend this mascara to people who like coloured mascaras, and people who like lashes to look thicker. However if you're like me and prefer to emphasise the length of your lashes, go for another brand. I've seen that Benefit do a purple mascara, so once this one's run out I think I'll go for that, as Benefit mascara does make lashes look longer.
I adore Urban Decay, the products not only look great, but are also of really good quality and work well. Particularly the wonderful eyeshadows. However this was a huge disappointment :(
Picked this up in Boots last month for about £14.00, I've tried big fatty lip plumper before, which actually works really well for me, so had high hopes for this. They both have the same funky (if a little tacky) packaging.
But this does not work at all for me, massive let down. It has a really gigantic brush, but that does not equate to gigantic eyelashes, in fact it actually made my eyelashes look worse than they do without mascara!
The massive brush is just way to big to work with properly, I like to do the 'zig zag motion' whilst applying mascara but it's difficult to do that with this. You can not get it under your eyelashes properly to work it properly and you can forget the inner lashes (unless you want to jab yourself in the eye). The formula itself is very poor, does nothing special (no false lash effect as marketed), colour is not that intense and dries out way too fast.
Final words, just save your money.
I was given Urban Decay Big Fatty Mascara in black as a gift for Christmas. My initial thoughts revolved around the packaging, it is a very cool looking mascara. The Mascara tube has a retro 60's vibe to it with the colourful pattern and the purple handle.
The label on the side of the mascara says that it is a thickening and lengthening mascara and so this is what I was expecting it to do. I would say that this mascara does a reasonable job of lengthening my lashes but does not appear to have made them significantly thicker, which is a bit of a let down considering the fact that it is called 'Big Fatty'. However this may be due to the way I apply my mascara. I tend to wipe off excess product from the wand brush and apply from the roots of my lashes wiggling the wand through. The brush itself is very long at about 3.5cm and personally I find it a little too long and often get mascara accidently in the corner of my eye!
This mascara makes my eye lashes look much better than they do without mascara giving them a healthy and lengthened appearance but I'm not sure that it does such an amazing job to warrant its price tag, a similar effect is probably available from a cheaper product.
For full, fat lashes!
