Advantages: Good range of colours, would make a nice gift
Disadvantages: Lids wont close, hard to see colours in containers, poker rules very basic
Part of my recent order with Save on Makeup was the Urban Decay poker set of lip glosses. I'll admit I didn't really need it, but it was cute and about the RRP, so I popped it in my cart.
===PACKAGING===
The set comes in a light purple mock-croc box with a big window in the lid so you can see what's inside. There is a thin plastic tray covered with that strange thin velvety stuff shaped to hold the contents. This makes it near-impossible to remove the glosses, and you cant tell which they are without taking them out as the name is printed underneath, so I ripped out this liner. Once it's gone you have a pretty box box to store these glosses in or whatever else you choose.
The glosses are contained in $1000 "poker chips" in purple and black. They are the same circumference as you would find in a standard poker set, but about twice as thick with the lid on. The actual amount of gloss really isn't all that much (0.4g) as the container is shallow and some of the size of the chip is dedicated to making the lid close (or not...see below).
Because the container is purple, it makes it difficult to see the true colour of the glosses.
Unfortunately the lids DO NOT stay on. I suspect that's why they are so jam-packed into the box, so they don't arrive with their lids off. Instead of a screw-on lid, it just has four little 'catches' but they are so small they do nothing and the lid pops right off.
===CONTENTS===
The contents are as follows:
- A pack of plastic-coated Urban Decay playing cards. The design is in the same purple as the box.
- Ten poker chips filled with different Urban Decay glosses in popular shades (for more info read below).
- A sheet of basic instructions for playing poker.
===THE GLOSSES===
Okay, here's the part you've all been waiting for...the poker set contains five Ultraglide lip glosses and five XXX Shine glosses.
The Ultraglide shades are (with descriptions by Urban Decay):
Gash - deep shimmering red
Quiver - shimmering medium pink
Heat - sheer red with gold sparkle
Hustle - very sheer shimmering brown
Deep - rosy pink
XXX Shine shades are:
Kinky - rosy pink with silver shimmer
Quickie - sizzling sheer hot pink (this one is bright!)
Joyride - bright pink with silver shimmer
Ozone - pure, clear shine (completely neutral gloss)
Heatherette - shimmering beige with a touch of silver sparkle
Because of the size of the container, for me it seems most natural to apply using a finger, and I find I need quite a lot on my finger to achieve even colour coverage. The shinier, more sheer shades do require less however, and I feel that the others are probably a little more troublesome as the full size is in liquid form so they are "not used" to being packed into a pot, if that makes any sense!
The glosses smell sweet without having a particular scent, and taste the same. They are not sticky, you can feel them on your lips but it isn't unpleasant. They last an average length of time and for me most of the shades look good.
===THE POKER PART===
The postcard-sized instructions definitely don't go into much detail about playing the game. For me, a poker retard, they just wouldn't be useful at all. I have some knowledge of the game, but by the next time I come to play, I have completely forgotten everything I've learned. The instructions seem to focus more on when you would need to use the chips, so don't plan on having a poker night once you get this set unless you already know how to play or intend to do some reading up first!
===VERDICT===
Overall, very gimmicky. At its retail price of £12.50, it would make a nice gift, especially for a poker fiend, ie who knew how to play and wouldn't need the instructions. It is also a good way to try out several of Urban Decay's glosses, and there are a good variety of colours, without committing to buying a full size, although not being able to see the shade before you apply is fairly annoying, and there are bound to be a few shades within this selection that you just wont wear.
A big drawback for me is that the lids wont stay closed. They are the perfect size for slipping into even a very small pocket, but this isn't possible because you'd end up with a gloss full of fluff, not to mention a sticky pocket!
I bought mine from Save on Makeup where it is still on sale for £5.99, but I have also seen it on several other discount makeup sites for the same price. I think it would be hard to find in shops as it's limited edition and most stores have fairly small displays of Urban Decay.
Summary: A novelty only although the products inside are good quality.
