Advantages: Simple and versatile eyeshadow, effective as a primer

Disadvantages: Not as effective a primer as the original primer potion

Many of you may have already tried Urban Decay's Eyeshadow Primer Potion, the wonder product that helps your eyeshadow stay on all day and night without budging. In the last couple of years the brand has released another version of the primer potion, called 'Sin'. This product is based on the eyeshadow of the same name, apparently Urban Decay's best-selling eyeshadow. The idea is that this primer potion can be used underneath eyeshadow as a primer or as an eyeshadow in its own right, giving your eyelids a light bronze shimmer.

The product states on the box: "This two-in-one beauty miracle gives you gorgeous color AND the staying power of our #1 selling product... Eyeshadow Primer Potion. Used alone, Sin is a crease-proof shimmering champagne shadow. But used before any shadow, it becomes a high-powered eyeshadow magnet. Expect vibrant color that lasts all day, a touch of added sheen, and no creasing!".

I actually bought this because the branch of Debenhams I was shopping in didn't have any of the original primer potion left, and I wanted to spend a £5 makeup voucher I had. This reduced the price of the product from around £12 to around £7. The bronze box is very pretty, covered in a snake and apple pattern (presumably to evoke the Garden of Eden), and the curvaceous bottle is exactly the same as the original - except that whereas the original potion comes in a purple bottle, Sin comes in a bronze one. Presumably this is meant to reflect the colour of the potion. I love the bottle and think it looks really good on any shelf! Unfortunately the design of the bottle does mean that it's hard to use up every last scrap of the product, and it's not the easiest to cut open (in fact, make that next to impossible!).

To use the product, you need to unscrew the lid and remove the applicator from the bottle. The sponge applicator looks like the sort you get with a lip gloss, and it's possible to use it to apply the potion straight onto your eyelid. Experience has taught me, however, that I get a better result if I dab the potion onto my eyelid with my little finger. Only a very small amount is needed, and I can gently blend the light-textured liquid in easily. I usually cover my entire eyelid and sometimes go up almost to the brow bone.

As an eyeshadow, the product looks really good, creating a light champagne shade that's natural but pretty. The shade looks great on my pale skin, but I think it would also look good on bronzed or darker skin. The look is great for summer and it also goes well with a stronger lipstick for an evening look. The eyeshadow gives a light shimmer which is ideal for the evening, yet subtle enough for daytime. I've worn this product in lots of different situations and been happy with it every time.

Worn alone, the eyeshadow lasts for hours which is reminiscent of Urban Decay's other eyeshadows. It doesn't crease, which is very impressive given it's a liquid, and I never need to reapply throughout the day.

Unfortunately, I don't feel this product is quite as effective as the original Primer Potion when used under eyeshadow. The original keeps eyeshadow looking perfect from eight in the morning to eleven at night and beyond if necessary. I've noticed that this product can't quite match that - it keeps eyeshadow looking good for a fair few hours, granted, but it does start to crease in the late afternoon/early evening. In addition, I'm not very keen on the slight shimmer effect produced by this potion. If my eyeshadow is shimmery anyway, I don't need this product to do it for me. If my eyeshadow is matte, well, it's matte for a reason - I don't want to change it.

I do think this is a good product. It works incredibly well as a simple and versatile eyeshadow, and it's reasonably effective as a primer for a few hours, such as an evening out. It would be ideal for taking on holiday as it has a number of uses. Personally, I will continue to use this product until it's used up and then I'll be buying a bottle of the original potion. I do like the eyeshadow colour, but I have a powder version as part of the Naked Eye Palette.

Urban Decay do not test on animals and their makeup has the official cruelty-free logos to prove it, including the recognisable 'leaping bunny' logo. This is great as I definitely do not approve of testing makeup on animals!
