Advantages: looks good

Disadvantages: can be messy

I am a fan of eye liner and wear it every day so when I go out to a party or special event I like to wear something that's a bit different to the eye liner that I wear on a daily basis. I have a couple of these Urban Decay glitter eye liners for these special occasions and although I don't think they are the best I do like the effect that they have if I get it right!

Urban Decay

This glitter eye liner is made by Urban Decay who make beauty products that are not as easily available as the usual brands (Rimmel, Number 7 etc) I first came across these in Debenhams and then in House of Fraser. They make a variety of beauty products that are a bit different with 'edge' but the prices of them are not too different to the popular brands which makes them very affordable. The products they make tend to be packaged in a more 'unique' way and they pride themselves on trying to be different as when they first started out as a business 15 years ago they wanted to steer away from traditional make up colours of pinks and and bieges and instead introduced different ideas to the market. They are now an internationally selling brand and product lots of make up products such as eye shadows, eyeliners, make up setting sprays, powders and many more.

Glitter eyeliner

Urban Decay make several glitter eyeliners so you have a choice of colours. I have several in my collection. I find that they have a very high volume of glitter in them which makes the result of applying it be very effective as it shines through and is very visible- I mean you aren't going to be buying a glitter eyeliner if you want something subtle are you? So it should stand out!

The bottle

This eye liner comes in a round, tall and thin bottle. Other liquid eye liners that I have tend to have quite small bottles but this is more like a mascara bottle than a liquid eye liner. This is because the actual wand is quite long so that the bottle needs to have some length to it to accommodate it. The bottle is see through which I think is essential for this product as you do really need to see what the eye liner looks like as it's not just about the colour but also about the thickness and quantity of glitter that is within. The writing on the bottle is white which isn't actually very good against this colour as it doesn't show up very well but that doesn't bother me.

The applicator

The applicator is a very fine brush which comes inside the lid of the bottle. The lid of the bottle is wide enough for you to be able to get a good grip of it for whilst you are applying the eye liner. It is round and smooth, perhaps it would be a bit better if there were some grooves so that it is slightly better in terms of it being used as a handle to apply the liner. The wand itself is extremely thin, it is fine bristles of brush which is only short. This means that you do not have a lot of the liner on the brush at any time and that the lines you draw can only be very thin if you just use one motion. I think that it being so thin is important as it gives you options as to how you use it. It is also important that it is short, if it was long then it would be difficult to control.

Applying the eyeliner

I always find that liquid eye liners are difficult to apply because they are 'wet' so you stand more chances of smudging them than you do with a crayon plus it's harder to have control as the applicator is a brush and not just a nib. It has taken me quite some time to perfect applying liquid eye liners and so if you are not used to using them do expect that applying this could be quite messy and difficult!

To apply the eye liner I ensure that I do not have a big blob of it on the end of the wand as if I did then it could be blotchy when it first makes contact with the skin. When applying this- less is more. I then wipe it across the eyelid quickly, I find that if I am slow whilst applying it then my hand is likely to shake and the line is less likely to be fine and straight. If you are fast then it will be easier to control. If I want to produce a thicker line then I simply go over it again with a fresh wand of liner.

Once the eye liner is in place it is then really important not to open your eyes fully. If you open your eyes fully before this has dried then there is a very good chance of it smudging and appearing on the upper eye lid which is definitely not a good image! It takes about 2-3 minutes to dry which seems like a long time when you're sitting there with your eyes semi-closed so it's not really ideal but it is the only way to make sure that you don't end up in a sticky mess.

The result

The colour of this glitter eye liner is a very bold silver. It has lots of tiny flecks of glitter in it making it extremely shiny and therefore effective. There is so much glitter that it will stand out even if you just use one line on your eyes. It definitely stands out as it sparkles away and it isn't blotchy due to the quantity of glitter- with some other brands the glitter isn't as much so that there are some parts of the line that you will draw that lack any sparkle but this doesn't have that effect.

One thing I have noticed is that if you apply this too close to your eye that when you get warm it can begin to slide a bit and end up actually going into your eye which can be very painful and sting so it is only effective if you apply it just away from the corners of your eyes so that it won't drip into them.I use this when I'm going on a special night out so that it is something different to my usual eye liner. I apply it on top of my black crayon eye liner so that it is most effective as the silver within this liner really stands out then against the black. It certainly does look different and makes me feel as though I am making more of an effort.

What I like

It is different to wearing just ordinary eye liner
The amount of glitter in it makes it very dazzling
It has good staying power
The wand is very well designed
The bottle lasts a long time

What I don't like

It takes a while to dry
If you don't apply it quickly it can be hard to get a straight line
It stings if it gets into your eyes

Price wise this cost me £8.00 but I have seen it can be cheaper. I think that it is quite expensive but it is something which should last you a while as the bottle is large and you don't need to use much each time. You can buy Urban Decay products online and also in large department stores such as Debenhams.
