Advantages: works

Disadvantages: aloe vera - does it do anything?

These little lip balms have been around for a while in many different incantations. This one is all about the aloe vera. Aloe Vera is a plant that is often used in herbal medicines. Although it is proven to have some medicinal power inside the body, its effect on outer body use (that sounds like an alien thing) is actually not proven. It is proposed to be useful for the healing of wounds, but that hasn't really been proven. Despite this, it's in a lot of medicines, and the Vaseline people obviously thought it wouldn't do any harm to put some into their pot. To me, it doesn't radically change the product (I've tried a few in this range), but on the other hand it can't hurt to have that something extra in there that may (just may) do a bit more than the usual stuff. I can't say it makes it noticeably different in smell or look, texture or taste, but it is in there (I know because the pot tells me so!)

Priced at around £1 for a cute metal tin containing 20g of vaseline, the Lip therapy vaseline is a handy product to have.

The product is for dried or sore skin, and it creates a protective, lubricant barrier than prevents the air or wind getting to the sore area. I tend to use it when I get a bad cold, and my nose gets dry and cracked from blowing it so much. It does a brilliant job of soothing the soreness, and also makes it a lot nicer the next time I blow my nose as the tissue doesn't graze my poor skin.

The product itself is yellow and slimy, but if you rub it in well to the skin it all but becomes invisible.

If you liked it, there are other varieties, such as flavoured ones, or the 'Aloe Vera' one (the green one).

The other down-side is that the size of the pot means it's only good for small and infrequent use, so if you're looking for vaseline in larger quantities and for greater use, then try buying one of those big old pots that guy in Kill Bill uses to, erm, well yeah!

In conclusion, an adequately priced vaseline that does the job, but is too heavily marketted at women due to it cuteness, and could do with toughening up a bit to get the men interested.

Summary: do it
