Advantages: Works well, non greasy, good value

Disadvantages: The fragrance

Luckily for me, I was treated to a manicure for my birthday earlier this year. I will admit that I do not usually spend much time looking after my hands, I never wear gloves when doing the housework and have no idea how to shape a nail. However, after being pampered (and really enjoying it!) I could see and feel a big difference in my skin. My hands were so soft I dreaded having to wash them! So, off I went to choose some hand cream.

I've always been a Vaseline fan, so choosing the Intensive Care Healthy hand and Nail was easy for me. I instantly recognized the dark blue logo which stands out from the pale pink tube. It states on the tube front that it 'softens hands and strengthens nails by 50%'. It also tells you that it contains keratin, milk proteins and vitamin E. The directions advise you to use 2-3 times daily, and to smooth into your hands, nails and cuticles.

I have the 75ml tube which only cost £1.00 from ASDA,and is a handy size for sticking in your handbag. Mine actually stays in there now and comes everywhere with me! I've also seen a 200ml bottle for £2.98. The tube stands on the dark blue cap, which means all the lotion is stored at this end, making it instantly available when the cap is opened, although it is quite a runny consistency so I advise holding the tube at an angle when full or most of it will end up on your lap. The smell at first is quite strong but not of perfume, I think it may be the glycerin. It's not particularly nice, but quickly fades and a floral fragrance takes over. I'm not keen on floral scents but it does smell clean and isn't very noticeable after a little while.

I apply a generous blob, about the size of a ten pence piece and vigorously rub all over my hands and fingers. You have to be fairly quick because it takes very little time to soak into your skin. I then add a little more and rub into each nail and cuticle. When this has completely dried (just a few seconds) I then add a little more if necessary to my knuckles. It does leave your hands feeling soft and silky smooth. There is no greasy residue and no 'clammy' feel like I have had with other lotions.

I've had my little tube about 2 months now and it's just starting to run out, I only use it once or twice a day. I will definitely buy it again! For any info on the Vaseline products or Unilever who now own them, and for ingredients used in this product reviewed, check out www.unilever.co.uk

Summary: Fast acting and effective hand and nail cream
