Advantages: Good value, not slimy or sticky, soft hands
Disadvantages: Quite runny, packaging not perfect, not an intensive moisturiser
I have very sensitive hands which have suffered from eczema all my life, they are constantly dry and itchy, so I have to be extremely careful about what products I use on my skin. I normally moisturise my hands every time I wash my hands, before bed, in the morning and other time throughout the day, so moisturiser is very important to me. While away from home, I ran out of my normal creams and so I had to borrow some Vaseline hand and nail lotion. I was very surprised to find that this lotion did not irritate my skin any more than my usual moisturisers.
Description
The Vaseline 'intensive care' hand and nail lotion is more runny than cream and will drip if you tip your hand upside down. This white creamy liquid absorbs quickly into the skin and is particularly effect immediately after washing your hands. The lotion does make your hands feel soft and I find it can also be used on the face and body. I haven't noticed my nails becoming any stronger, but my nails were pretty strong anyway. There is a faint smell that is not unpleasant, but this scent disappears quickly. It does not feel like a luxury creamy moisturiser, but it is a practical every day lotion that is good value at less than £3 for 200ml.
Comparisons
I normally used 'aqueous' and 'oilatum', as prescribed by my doctor, but these emollients are quite slimy and sticky for a while after use, so I was very happy to find an alternative that I can use in a hurry. However, the Vaseline lotion will not replace the others because, although it absorbs well into the skin, I find I need 2 or 3 applications formy handsto feel as moisturised as usual. Other moisturisers I have tried, from brand such as Nivea and Dove have been irritating to my very sensitive skin, and I haven't found a lost cost moisturiser that beat the Vaseline lotion for sensitivity.
Packaging
The lotion that I currently have comes in a large pot with a flip cap over a small opening (different to the one shown in the main photo of this product). This is not a very useful because the lotion is liquid enough to pour straight out when the pot is upturned, making it very difficult to get a small amount out without spilling. This also results in a crust developing around the hole, preventing the lid from closing unless you wipe it clean every time. So, if you can find it with a push tap dispenser, I would recommend avoiding the flip lid ones. The lotion also comes in a tube, which is hand for travel, but not as good value as you only get 75ml for a similar price to the 200ml pot.
Conclusion
If you have sensitive skin, I would recommend trying out this lotion as an alternative to other moisturisers. It is not really an intensive moisturiser, but it is good value and convenient.
Summary: This lotion is worth a try for people with sensitive skin.
