Advantages: Cheap, covers a multitude of beauty problems

Disadvantages: Childish people laughing at vaseline!

Whoever said Diamonds are a girl's best friend was right. But a small tin of Vaseline comes in second place. At 99p it is a bargain, is great on chapped lips and doesn't take up much room. It may not be the most glamorous and will always raise an eyebrow when offered around, but it does work.

What is it?

Vaseline is petroleum jelly - a clear by product discovered on oil rigs. It repels water and was first marketed as a healing aid.

Uses

Vaseline Lip Therapy can be used - believe it or not - on cracked lips but it has many other uses that can be helpful to have in your handbag:

1 - When you have a cold and a chapped nose you can apply it and it will start healing the redness and dry skin. This can also be used on other areas of dead skin.

2 - If you get a small burn (as in slight redness - not through the skin) lather it in vaseline to cool the area down.

3 - If you have been crying and don't have any mascara to hand put a slight bit on your finger and rub it against your eyelashes - it will give them a thickness and shine. Some people believe it helps them grow longer so put it on before bed but I haven't tried this.

4 - Stangely my brother carries this around for when he plays football or goes for a run. He puts it in his hairline to stop the sweat running gel into his eyes.

5 - Bruises - I don't know if this has any medical basis but I really believe this is true! I got bitten by a dog last year and my arm from wrist to elbow was blue. I applied vaseline ever couple of hours and within 3 days my arm was completely back to normal.

6 - If your eyeshadow clumps up in the crease of your eye you can put a thin layer of vaseline over the lid to hold the shadow in place. For a more glossy eyed look place vaseline over the shadow too.

7 - This is great if you have a baby and don't want to be hauling a massive pot if vaseline - it helps with nappy rash

8 - If you are running low on make up remover vaseline can be used to take of waterproof mascara, lipstick and blusher

9 - If you are doing a self dye job or perm form a barrier on your skin to stop it damaging your skin/ staining your head

10 - Use to tame unruly eyebrows

11 - If you are having a photo taken rub some vaseline on your teeth to stop your lips sticking to them and giving you a toothy beauty queen grin

Problems

1 - Despite recommendations don't stab a whole in the top to help opening it - this doesn't work and it can lead to vaseline in your bag.

2 - Don't leave it anywhere warm as it melts to a liquid then doesn't reset properly (and can lead to problem number 1)

3 - I don't know if it is recommended to use this on your face regularly and in large amounts as it can form a barrier to moisture in the air speeding up aging

Summary: Things you need in your bag are keys, phone, purse and vaseline

Be careful with vaseline on burns as it can make them worse :)......eiley
