Advantages: Price, effectiveness

Disadvantages: Melts in sun

Vaseline has always been a feature of our household and I remember being told numerous times to 'put some vaseline on it' after moaning about sore and chapped lips to my mum. Vaseline lip therapy comes in a little tin, big enough to last months or even years but small enough to fit easily into your pocket or bag. The packaging is also good because as it is a tin, you can put it in your bag without worrying that it will leak or become damaged by other items.

When Vaseline lip therapy first came out it was only available in the original variety (blue tin), however now there are three other varieties in the shops. The Vaseline with Aloe Vera (green tin) is formulated to soothe your lips while the 'Sun protection' (yellow tin) contains spf 15 which is particularly good for protecting lips in the summer. 'Rosy Lips' (in the pink tin) is my personal favourite as this vaseline gives a very subtle pinkish tint to your lips which is great if you want a natural look.

Vaseline lip therapy varies in price depending on the type, however all four varieties are very cheap and really good value. The 'Sun protection' variety is usually the most expensive as it contains spf and is priced at around £1.69. The rosy lips costs about £1.49 while the original and aloe vera are usually about £1.15. I have often seen this product at a cheaper price in some of my local shops so would recommend shopping around for the best price.

Vaseline is basically petroleum jelly and acts as a barrier on your lips, locking the moisture in and stopping them from drying out. It is a very simple formula and doesn't contain any of the complex chemicals of some of the more expensive lip balms, however it is very effective and keeps my lips really soft and moisturised throughout the day.

It is also great for a natural lip gloss as it gives a subtle shine to my lips that is really good when I'm trying to keep my makeup natural. If you don't want shiny lips you can simply rub the vaseline into your lips thoroughly so that it still works its magic but doesn't look shiny. This is particularly good for men who want to keep their lips moisturised without looking made up!

Other uses for Vaseline
********************
Although Vaseline lip therapy is intended to keep lips moisturised it has various other wierd and wonderful uses that make it a handbag essential. These include the following:

To stop blisters: Vaseline can act as a lubricant between your feet and shoes and can stop them rubbing. I often find flip-flops really rub between the toes but putting a bit of vaseline on the area really helps to stop them rubbing.

For cuticles: the product can also be used on rough cuticles to moisturise them and although you may need a bigger pot of it to regularly use it on nails this small tin is great for a quick fix when out and about.

On eyelids: I have friends who use Vaseline on their eyelids to give them a natural sheen. I have never tried this personally but it could be good on tired eyes.

Eyebrows: The product can also be used to smooth over your eyebrows to make them stay in place (probably best not to use the rosy lips variety for these tips as you don't really want red eyes or brows!)

So there are loads of different uses for Vaseline and the lip therapy tin makes it easy to use on the go. There are a couple of disadvantages to this product however. The first is that it isn't great to take on holiday as it melts in hot weather and becomes really sticky and gooey. It's also not ideal if you like your lipbalm to smell and taste nice as although it doesn't smell bad, it isn't really fragranced at all so you don't get the nice feeling of a chocolate or strawberry balm.

These problems are very small however, and the price and effectiveness of this product makes it a really worthwhile addition to any makeup bag!
